At least temporarily, I went from this 1994 Nishiki Sport XRS

to this 1983 Raleigh Marathon

The Nishiki has defective Shimano cranks; eventually they will be replaced under recall and the Nishiki will again be my commuter. In the meantime I've enjoyed getting to know the Marathon.

This is my second season of full out winter commuting. 1st season I tried it out with a mega-junker with fenders and studded tires (1 tire cost more than the bike...), 2nd season I custom built a sweet and funtional ride almost entirely out of old mtb parts sitting around and a new IGH. The difference is ridiculous, and this new bike is still 30lbs... Since the pics, I've added a chainguard, cleaner fender mounts, big mudflaps, a much better seat, a smaller chainring, and 26x2.0 330 spike front tire for the big days, tons of stealth white reflector tape, and finally the brake booster is where it belongs up front, balancing out the purple bling feng shui...
When this wears out eventually, I'll be riding a surly KM, 5spd internal hub, 2 canti brakes, 29er nokian 294 studded tires.

Kinda hard to see that in a picture. Doesn't matter what people say on here, if you like it, awesome.

I thought it was real clear in the pics. Those old MTBs are nice riding commuters, especially for somebody who rides a little rough. That one looks nice and clean too.
