Specialized Sirrus 2008 and Sirrus 2009

Does anyone know why the specialized sirrus 2009 seems to be quite a bit cheaper that the 2008 version??

Cheers

Will

Sorry the reason I am asking is that I am considering buying the sirrus 2009, but it is cheaper than the 2008 so I am a bit worried. I don't want to get ripped off!!

The details of both years are listed on the specialized site. Go find out what they changed.

Your bike shop should also be able to tell you.

A quick gander at the web site says the old Sirrus was $590, this year the Sirrus is $500 and the Sirrus Sport is $590.

The base Sirrus this year has Altus instead of Sora for some of the drivetrain, and they did eliminate the suspension seatpost.

The Sport looks pretty equivalent to last year's base Sirrus.

Well I'm looking at uk sites, 08 is 399 reduced to 349. Whereas 09 is 349 reduced to 293, a lot of sites are the same. One difference is 09 has twist shift

Yep, they downgraded components. To get the same level, in the same model as last year, you have to go up a model.

And, instantly, it's almost the same price as last year. But, the model designator is higher!

Funny deal.....

I have no information about your riding preferences or intended use on which to base a recommendation.

When I bought my Specialized Crosstrail, I was torn between the Sirrus, and the Crosstrail.

I went with the Crosstrail because I wanted front suspension, and wider tires.

In my humble opinion, both are quality bikes. They are just trying to remain competitive in a bad economy. You will get lower quality componentry in the new Sport, but it should work fine.

Read the specs on the different models, and decide which one you want.

I wouldn't be afraid of it at all . Specialized builds nice bikes.

If you want last year's quality, you will have to go up a notch to the Elite.

I'm talking about the base model sirrus.

The answer is still the same - ride one and decide. You get what you pay for.

It can't be junk, or they wouldn't sell any.

I bought the 2008 Sirrus base model in March 2008 and I love it. It performs and handles well. I bought it because it's essentially a road bike with flat handlebars and the geometry (sitting more forward than straight up) was comfortable for me. A buddy of mine is looking to buy a new bike and seems to have settled on the 2009 Sirrus Sport, which seems to me to be almost identical to the 2008 Sirrus base model (the paint and decals are different, though).

I think what Specialized wanted to do was make the Sirrus available to people for whom $500+ might be too much to spend on a bike. It would have been less confusing if they'd given this new and less expensive bike they introduced this year its own name, like the "Sirrus Economy" or something. Shuffling the model names has created a lot of confusion, even at the LBS where I bought my bike and my buddy plans to buy his.

You can compare specifications at the Specialized website. The 2009 Sirrus models are listed under bikes/multistreet/fitness-commute, and you can find the specs for the 2008 Sirrus base model by clicking on the "archive" link and then cicking on "2008." Compare the specs and try to test-ride both the 2009 base model and the 2009 Sport to see if you notice any differences. I can recommend the 2009 Sirrus Sport, but I didn't test ride the 2009 Sirrus base model, so I don't know if and how it might perform differently.

Personally, I much prefer the shifters on the 2009 Sirrus Sport (i.e., the same ones that are on my 2008 Sirrus base model) to those on the 2009 Sirrus base model. I find it more convenient to shift with my finger and thumb than to have to shift by twisting the hand grips. And because the shifts are in the grips for the 2009 base model, the grips themselves are less comfortable than the more cushioned grips used on the 2009 Sport. But that's just my own preference.

Good luck with your decision.

Right. Do you have any idea how many bikes Wal-Mart sells?
