My most feared list goes as follows:
1) Buses - "drivers" are reckless and irresponsible with vehicles of such size ... nothing makes me cringe like dueling with a 57 bus on my way home. 2) Cops - complete abuse of authority (driving wrong way down streets at 50 mph, no signaling, jumping lights, etc) 3) Pedestrians (usually of the student variety) - aimlessly wandering/running/falling into the street ... the only bike incident that has resulted in my ending up in the hospital involved a pedestrian running across the streets and straight into me. I have very few problems with cabs. They are generally predictably erratic (as are most passenger vehicles). Though I never ever take this tendency for granted. |

I am not a fan of school buses. Nobody else consistently passes as close as they do. |
School buses -- Yes! Way too close! This is not a rare thing -- I'm talking every dang time they pass.

Another DC rider here. Like others tourist ard occasionally cabs are bad. I will also add Ninja Bikers / runners on the Mount Vernon Trail (easily 6 miles of my commute) and unlocking my bike in NE outside the building where I know people regularly get mugged.

Wildlife lurking in the dark on my early morning commute.
Been hit by the surprised skunk that Chip spoke of in page 1 and the bear will be out again before long. |
I find my commute isn't scary at all so long as I'm doing it consistently. If I drive for a few days, I can really start imagining bad things happening at certain sketchy parts of the ride. After taking time off, I really struggle to force myself to get back out there and ride despite the dangers (real and imagined).

i find myself getting worried since i plan on starting the commute again. i haven't commuted since august though so it's almost like starting fresh for me, although i still ride as much as i can so i'm not scared of the cars and riding on the sidewalk, but i know i'll have to be on some busy streets for my commute.

1) Drivers with cell phones
2) cracks in the pavement. I got my front tire caught in one of those last year and was off the bike for 6 weeks. At the time of the morning when the sun is just coming up, it was hard to tell the ones that had been patched from the ones that hadn't. 3) Tour buses (not the city buses) Even all three put together are not enough to deter me though. Edited to add: Texas summer heat. Oh GOD.... it's just around the corner. :notamused: |
Cars that assume you are slow, punch the gass and pass you on the your left to make a right hand turn into you insted of staying behind you.
Pot holes under water in the rain that make your hands feel broken. You can't see glass in the rain or here it go "tick tick tick tick" so you can stop and dig it out befor you get a flat. All city buses here are drunk and angry! They are in the news every week for killing a walker or cyclest!!! Any bike lanes we have is for cab parking. No bathrooms can be scary after bran muffins and coffee! If you commute more than 1 mile from downtown Detroit you may run into a stray dog pack of 9 to 14 dogs that just want you to try and out run them, SUPER scary!:twitchy: Just so you know my list of things I like about my commut would be huge and way to big to put here! |
cellphones, cellphones and luxury cars(they don't care if they cream you, they know their lawyer will get them off)

Thanks for posting that link. As I was riding this morning I was astounded by drivers on my early morning, lightly traveled roads with two lanes in my direction who would not move out of the right hand lane, or even slow down as the passed me. While they didn't "buzz" me, the sound of an apparently obliviously driven car is still unnerving. It seems to be just a lack of common courtesy and compassion. I was pretty liberal in dispensing my bicyclist curses this morning after reading that article.
Here in Massachusetts, and I don't have the details, I recall hearing that there is a proposed law to make it mandatory to slow down and give a wide berth to vehicles stopped on the side of the road, with particular reference to police vehicles. Can you believe this has to be made a law? In my darkest thoughts, I sometimes think the only reason cagers don't want to hit a cyclist is that they don't want to scratch their car. I must admit though in my experience, truck and bus drivers in general are more courteous than auto drivers. I haven't made up my mind if there is any correlation between automobile size and courtesy. |
Potholes and large SUV & pick-up truck drivers. They are my most common problems in Illinois.

Police and hired limos are the worst drivers; inconsiderate to other drivers, keep their eyes on the sidewalk rather than the road, pull over and stop anywhere with no warning. Taxi behavior is scary but predictable, I've never had a problem with them. Out of town drivers are trouble but fortunately they are rare on Manhattan; I guess the place has a reputation that keeps them away.

Stupid soccer mom's driving their one child to school in the snow and ice in their giant Escalade's while talking on the phones... (3 FEET *****ES!!!!!!)

Cell-phone-entranced drivers.
Teen-agers coming out of high school lot in a hurry at lunch -- bEwArE! Pickup truck jack-zzaz. You know who you are. Do you have to be a D#@* to buy an F-250? |
