Forgetting how to drive?
I use the car so rarely now that I find it awkward and have a tendency to drive as if I were on the bike.
For example in residential areas on the bike I often roll through stop signs after making sure there is no traffic or on wide open residential intersections with no limit on my line of site not even slowing down. I have had to stop myself from doing this in the car a few times now.
At a traffic light after all the cars turning left have cleared but before I have the green I will take the liberty of starting through the intersection. Once again have had to stop myself from doing this in the car.
I can only hope that I wont attempt any off road short cuts in the car.
Yes I realize that if I did not take these liberty's on the bike the problem would be solved but who amongst us can honestly say they have never done these things at least a few times.

I am in this boat. Our should I say on this bike. I have a hard time judging how wide our minivan is. I do the stop short thing. The other day I almost didn't stop at a red light cause I knew I could make it (I could've). Also I go much slower. I will be doing fifty on the highway and I will wonder why the other cars doing seventy are in such a hurry.

I don't know about forgetting how to drive, but I do get much more nervious about the cars around me. I feel much more comfortable not going the same speed and feeling like I have more visability like I do when I'm on the bike.

I'm glad to find out that I'm not the only one experiencing this!! The other day I got in the car to run up to the hardware store. There are two ways to get there, one only accessable by bike since I can ride very briefly against traffic on the sidewalk and then cut through a parking lot. I found myself unable to continue because I had taken the bike route out of habit.
I also find myself "coasting" through stop signs if there is no traffic, much as I do on my bike. Once after several months of not driving, I had the irresistable urge to pedal when the car started to move! It just felt wierd to be in motion w/o pedalling!

Yeah, I've almost rolled stop signs once or twice. and when there's a line of cars, I have a tendency to start to pass on the right, and then realize i'm in a car!

The times I've rented a car over here, I've been amazed at the indirect routes I'm forced to take when not riding. Most one ways here are legal to ride either direction. There are countless lanes, paths, and tunnels that cars can't access.
Today I noticed that there was work being done on a local street that caused the separated bike road to be completely blocked. The car lane was unaffected. So they closed the lane off to cars, put a temporary barrier down the middle of the street, and made that into the bike lane! Told the drivers to stuff it. I have no idea where the cars ende up having to go. But you have to love the way they prioritize!
My licence expires in two months, and I may never renew it.

I guess I'm lucky that I don't go on many roads that have alot of stop signs. I always wait until I have the green on a bike, I've sat a green lights to many times and watched a stream of cars keep turning, even though I can guarantee they had a red.
As for the stop signs, I do the rolling stop/hesitation before proceeding. My bike habits don't translate to my car habits.

I like to think my driving skills remain intact, but I do think they get a little rusty. Then the other day I drove for the first time in a couple of weeks. I went home using the side streets that I take on my bike to avoid bike-unfriendly roads. Realized about halfway home that the route I was on made no sense in a car. Didn't stop me, though from starting to give the car a little more gas on the way down the big hill. Why? I always have to pick as much speed as possible down that hill so that I can make it up the other side. Once I realize that my car, unlike me, was not likely to run out of steam halfway up the next hill, I eased up on the gas.

I forget how wide the car is, so when I round a corner that I would normally carve right next to the curb on my bike, I jump the curb. The tires and rims on the passenger side of my subaru are nasty.

I've caught myself flooring the gas while simultaneously pushing the clutch in while
driving my truck and wondering why I'm having such a hard time clipping in.
Sometimes I also pull up on the steering wheel to make sure the front wheels clear a big pothole.
Had brief moments of panic when I can't find my brake levers on the steering wheel.
Once or twice I've sped up to catch up with someone who didn't allow 3 feet of space
whan passing me, been amazed at how quickly I'm gaining on them, and then realized
i'm not on my bike. What the hell would I say to them anyway?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has this problem.
My wife thinks it hilarious until she realizes I am doing 50mph on the interstate (70mph). I will also take my bike routes on errands throughout the town, which oddly enough, actually takes longer in a car. The other problem is that I swerve to much for the little potholes and cracks in the pavement when driving the car and yell at the cagers even though I am driving too...
She does most of the driving now...the kids insist.
