Left my truck at the Ford dealer last night for an oil change, so I HAD to bike to work this morning. Fortunately the weather was relatively nice, but I only got to ride one way, since I had to pick up my truck at lunch. That worked out OK, however, because it started raining about noon and was very cold and drizzly during my drive home.

bugly64 02-09-10 09:50 PM

It was a lot colder than it has been in a while. -2F with humidity felt like -15F.

sideways12 02-10-10 12:46 AM

I biked to and from class in the pouring rain :/

Fizzaly 02-10-10 02:39 AM

neilfein 02-10-10 06:02 AM

I'm all dressed to get on the bike, work clothes packed in the trunk bag, and I call the site closure number one last time before leaving... *now* they tell me we're closed?

bikegeek57 02-10-10 06:10 AM

wussed out today. wind chill in single digits. winds 25-30 with higher gusts and temp 22 deg. nah I don't do single digit wind chill. such a wuss.

vtjim 02-10-10 07:16 AM

A balmy 20F this morning. Very light wind at my back.

Skunk! :) It was waddling through a yard, and I stopped to give it plenty of room as it crossed the street I was on. No cars involved, fortunately. After it was safely across, I started riding again. A woman came out with her dog. I warned her. She thanked me very much and went the other way. :p

Today is the day of the great blizzard in NYC, but so far it's just wet: low 30s, wet snow, sludge. My new ski mask helped a lot, the wet snow blowing with force at times would be hard to deal with.

i played a game: "Follow the Plow" :)

tell me about it. I'm about to ride off into the beginnings of this snow storm that's going to turn into a mess. I have to teach an 11 am class but I guarantee they'll cancel at noon and I'll be riding back into 40-50 mph gusting wind and blinding snow. College administrators may be at institutions supposedly founded on scientific reason but when it comes to snow cancellation they don't believe it till they see it.:notamused:

rumrunn6 02-10-10 09:18 AM

buzz - it's snowing in Natick now. the superintendent of Maynard public schools announced last night that today was going to be a 1/2 day for my middle schoolers

Doohickie 02-10-10 09:36 AM

My weather was boring compared to many of you. Just under 30, no wind this morning. The ride home should see just under 40, no wind.

I can live with that.

This morning was my first commute with my new wheels. Very nice. I put my old tires on them but I think I'm going to look into something a little smoother and skinnier (700 x 38C right now.... considering 700 x 28C).

rumrunn6 02-10-10 09:37 AM

re: "something a little smoother and skinnier (700 x 38C right now.... considering 700 x 28C)"

+1 ... good plan!

2su 02-10-10 09:43 AM

streets were decently plowed/salted... it was a nice ride but I almost spun out a few times on packed snow/icy spots.

On a sad note... I got bum rushed by a geared rider at a red light... he passed me and I failed to overtake him. He knew how to spin... and how to use his gears. - Happens about once every six months or so. Its the only time I regret riding a single speed.

arch2wheel 02-10-10 10:12 AM

53 and shorts with a chance of rain. Very little traffic. First ride in since getting sick last week. Nothing better than a morning bike ride to clear the sinuses.

funrover 02-10-10 10:17 AM

Today was a great ride in, loved it. Started off at 11 degrees or so. Was able to try out the new booties my wife got me.. makes a nice difference!! Supposed to be in the mid 40's on the return home.. WOO HOO!!

Well, I was kind of wrong. They cancelled at 2 pm, which meant my first class went it's full length- a good thing- and I didn't have to teach the second class, and I didn't have to ride home in a raging blizzard because it was raining and didn't start snowing until I pulled into my driveway. Hopefully, my rehearsal tonight will be cancelled.

edit: evening gig got cancelled. I'm home for the night and glad not to ride in the worst of the storm.:thumb:

43F and pea soup fog. Had two blinkies going and was still pretty nervous about it.

jeffpoulin 02-10-10 03:04 PM

20cm of new snow last night, -4C this morning and -2C this afternoon. Despite the conditions, I had a great ride. Was feeling energetic and happy to be on the bike. Put me in a good mood all day.

dwilbur3 02-10-10 08:34 PM

Woo and Hoo! My new personal speed record. I did 15.8 mph (that's 25.5 kph if, like me, you want to feel a little faster) AVERAGE on my way home tonight. That's a 0.5 mph faster than my previous best (on Monday).

I'm a happy camper. My sympathies to all the snow riders out there, riding home at 55F is awesome. (Especially with a 10 mph tail wind!)

mondaycurse 02-10-10 09:30 PM

Tonight, I rushed to get out of work and decided not to wear the legwarmers. Bad idea.

tarwheel 02-11-10 06:45 AM

Had a nice fast ride to work this morning with tailwinds much of the way. Rode my Eddy Merckx because my commuter/touring bike is at the shop, so I would have ridden faster even without the wind. Even had pretty good luck at the traffic lights except some dolt in a pickup truck in front of me started reading his mail while waiting for the last light to change. This particular light has a very long cycle, so when he failed to notice it had turned green, I just went around him on the right. That apparently woke him up and he got through the light, but it may have been red by then. If it was, he is in for a surprise because there is a red-light camera at that light.

vtjim 02-11-10 07:44 AM

Compared with yesterday's 20F, today's 22F felt tropical! :p Calm wind. No skunks seen.

neilfein 02-11-10 08:33 AM

Packed ice all the way in. I want sloooow and took mostly low-traffic back roads. Slipping and sliding cars are more scary to me than ice.

I have a new folding bike on order, and I think the old onee will become my snow bike. I need to figure out how to get 16" studded tires.

z90 02-11-10 09:24 AM

Third day this week on my brand spankin' new Long Haul Trucker. Wee hoo! Sunny, breezy 22 F. The roads were pretty dry. I am running 35mm studded tires. I need to put a mud flap on my front fender to protect the drive train a bit from the salt.

rumrunn6 02-11-10 09:37 AM

z90 ... pics? +1 for the mud-flap!

AdamDZ 02-11-10 09:38 AM

The hardest and longest commute by far. Quite a snowfall last night, "warm" though, low 30s. Streets were mostly slush, but shoulders and most bike lines were blocked by piles of wet snow and there were lots of new potholes, some several feet across, filled with slush and water so I had to ride very carefully. I detoured to avoid two bridges (metal surface) and few streets that were not plowed yet. I had to stop often and wait for a bus to leave the stop or for a truck to turn, roads too messy to risk passing too close and I left earlier in expectation of slow commute so I had the time. Then the Williamsburg Bridge was all ice!. Chunky, uneven ice. Even on my studded tires I found it challenging both to climb and then to descend on that stuff. I had to take a breather on the way up, it was tough. My first experience of this sorts. There was only one other cyclists, he looked more experienced and stronger and he had regular tires with no studs! He stopped a couple of times too, he said he was having fun. I couldn't decide if that ride was fun or if it sucked or both. It took me over 10 minutes to cross the bridge at 3-5mph, normally a 2-3 minute pass. There was a guy snowboarding down the bridge. I wouldn't give up though and I refused to walk!

I salute to all bike commuters who ride in such conditions daily!

A little huffing and puffing today, my 3rd ride in 7 days, after 2 days of gorging.

jeffpoulin 02-11-10 11:22 AM

15F this morning and 22F this afternoon with a 30 mph steady wind that lasted all day. I decided to cut the commute short and take the train both ways. Only did 15 miles today. Hopefully the wind will die down tonight so I can do my normal commute tomorrow.

caloso 02-11-10 11:39 AM

You Eastern Seaboard commuters are awesome. Insane, but awesome. It was a lovely morning here: high overcast with a little sun peeking through, dry streets, no fog, 49F and calm. Took a 15 mile detour and felt like I could have kept riding all day.
