40F and clammy. Felt really strong today, don't know why. The baklava at lunch yesterday?

When I first read your post, I saw balaclava, not baklava, and thought to myself, now that's an interesting meal choice! You know you think about cycling too much when... :roflmao2:

Thanks, though, HW! I had been happy with the orange I had after my lunch as a dessert, and now you've made me hungry for baklava. Thanks A LOT! :notamused:

Awsome ride in to work this morning. It was a balmy 37F and foggy. Saw 2 other commuters this morning, usually see a few more but I rode earlier than normal today. We had our first bicycle fatality on Monday evening (7pm). A middle aged man who rode his bike pretty much daily was crossing a busy intersection in the cross walk when a drunk driver (owner of a local bar) turned the corner and ran the cyclist over. The drunk guy fled but was followed by a witness and returned to the scene. He was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and felony fleeing the scene of a crime. Makes you a little nervous about being out on your bike. I have front/rear lights, mirror, bright clothing ect. but you never know.

Made it home alive. New lights are better than old lights. Must get back on the Aurora!

the bike ride in today fooled me. Listened to the radio for the temp and thought they said 38 or something. Looked outside and it looked cloudy and for some reason left my rain gear, which had been drying out. I mean I deliberately left it behind. I usually carry it with me pretty much everyday unless it's an absolute certain no rain/snow day. Well, got out of the house and down the road about 200' and a snow squall started that intensified for the whole 10 mile ride to work so that I was pretty wet by the time I got there. I have new rain gear on the way- maybe that's why I left this home- it's so old and I've "revived" it so many times it's just not that good. But it would have been better than nothing today.

My new yellow, reflectorized gloves really seem to make a difference when signaling lane changes! I think I've tried gloves like this years ago with similar results but eventually I lost them or something and never replaced them- they're good though.

Yesterday and today was awesome - I rode the Phillips both days, and so took it sloooowwww...and relaxed.

Yesterday, I decided to dandy myself a bit, and wore my work clothes home as-is, with a pair of florscheims, black slacks, a white shirt, tie and grey cardigan topped by a Stetson fedora. I got a look or three, but it was well worth it, and the thermos of hot tea and "Great Expectations" turned a 40 minute ride into a 3 hour one.

This morning, riding into the sunrise, there were flocks of blue herons on either side of the road calling to each other and flying back and forth. It was amazing. I love this time of year.

tarwheel 03-05-10 08:19 AM

I must be getting acclimated to the cold weather. The temperature was colder this morning (mid-20s F) than it has been over the past couple of weeks, so I dressed a little warmer. I didn't think I overdressed but ended up sweating like crazy on my way to work. My glasses got all drippy wet and my base gear was soaked. Not sure what that was about. Maybe the humidity was higher today, or perhaps it was due to riding with a tailwind much of the way. I should find out this afternoon if it was the tailwind, because I should have a stiff headwind most of the way home.

Where'd you get these, buzzman?

Took a roundabout way into work today. Even though it was a loopy route that had me following almost every point of the compass, it felt like a constant headwind. Weird.

2su 03-05-10 08:34 AM

the best part about today's commute was how sweaty my hands got in my gloves... its time to switch back to my less hard-core gloves! Winter is so close to being over (ignoring the snow everywhere).

genel 03-05-10 08:36 AM

12f this morning with 40 forecast this afternoon. Hard to figure out what to wear. No wind, but very heavy traffic. Flock of ducks overhead signallled that, indeed, spring may be coming! Mine were the only tracks frozen into the bike path from yesterday. About 3 inches in the deeper tracks.

Chalupa102 03-05-10 09:09 AM

33F this morning with winds from the NNE @ 15mph. I was expecting to see snow falling but there wasn't. It was a very smooth commute to school and i felt pretty strong for some reason, especially when pulling away from intersections as soon as the lights would turn green.

neilfein 03-05-10 09:12 AM

First commute home on my Tikit where I rode the whole way home (i.e., not my normal bike/train commute).

21.8 miles in 2 hours and 20 minutes, better time than I've ever made by 5 minutes on any bike! I didn't walk any hills (although I came close once or twice).

I hit 37.8 MPH coming down the Watchung Mountains. (My previous speed record is 39.)

EKW in DC 03-05-10 09:32 AM

Added a couple extra miles to my commute last night for the hell of it. It was nice. This morning's ride was good, too. I didn't get as much sleep as I'd have liked last night, but my legs felt stronger this morning than they have in days despite the lack of sleep and the 15 mph headwind. Saw the most commuters I've seen in quite some time. Spring must be in the air now that the snow has melted.

groovestew 03-05-10 09:37 AM

This morning was my first cycle commute since the end of November. Nice to be back on the saddle! About -2C this morning. The thaw/freeze cycle around here has made much of my route pretty icy, but no mishaps, thankfully. This afternoon will be soupy/slushy.

I didn't realize my bicycle was manufactured by Toyota. That is, I managed to get a layer of ice on my rims or something, rendering my brakes completely ineffective. I had to drag my foot on the ground a couple of times to stop.

vtjim 03-05-10 11:04 AM

(Trying to wrap my head around Texans using balaclavas... :D Sorry.)

Nice ride this morning. Sunny, with a good tailwind to make it easy on me. Temps in the mid 20sF. I'm seriously considering removing my studded Nokians over the weekend. I know if I do that, a storm will drop rain that will freeze half an inch thick within 24 hours.

HardyWeinberg 03-05-10 11:18 AM

36F and sunny. No kids.

RB1-luvr 03-05-10 11:45 AM

nearly 40f this morning... another fun quick commute on the SS. shoulder is hanging in there, so I'm getting all the riding in I can before surgery next week. No telling how long I'll be off the bike post-op.

after I commute home, the tour bike is loaded up and ready for a weekend at girlfriend's. 40 hilly miles to her house tonight.

Chalupa102 03-05-10 04:18 PM

On the way home, it was 46F with winds from the NE @ 14mph. I guess it was "yell at the innocent cyclist doing nothing wrong" time. Two cars at different parts of the commute yelled at me. I think they were trying to scare/startle me, but it didn't work. Besides that, was still feeling strong and pretty much everything was smooth afternoon commute. I was accelerating from a few different lights too fast cuz i actually had to slow down to avoid running into the cars right in front of me.

HardyWeinberg 03-05-10 06:38 PM

off into 57F sunshine and the weekend (with a lot of work in it but no specific hours, at least)

I got them at a Army/Navy Store near Downtown Crossing in Boston. Here's a link to the manufacturer. They're not real warm but they'll be a good early spring/late fall glove. And they really are noticeable especially since they're new- it's a little extreme actually.

Kinco Waterproof "Safety Gloves"

My ride today was great. I picked up the rain gear I ordered at REI today- I had it shipped to my local store. When I picked it up I joked with the woman at the counter that it would probably clear up to a sunny sky and not rain for days now that I just spent $400! on new rain gear. Sure enough rode out of the parking garage and as I did the clouds parted and the sun burst through- first time in what seems like weeks.

Just checked the weather report sunny! and 50〫F! all weekend. No rain for at least a week!

acorn54 03-06-10 09:30 PM

well march 06. finally warms up to ride again for 2010.
very pleasant ride to and from work. of course my ride to work is alot slower than my ride from work, as i am eager to get home and see the horseracing results.
bike was worked on in the lbs,as it needed derailleur cables, and the rear wheel hub had to be adusted.
so hopefully hassel-free riding for quite some time

FreddyV 03-08-10 12:54 AM

This morning basically sucked. Zero winds and still I have a hard time getting myself to work. Might be caused that I had to leave at 5:30AM, may be because I still need to adjust my derailleurs a bit, may be because my body just isn't in tip top shape after not riding for one and a half week.

CCrew 03-08-10 04:59 AM

36 degrees, but for some odd reason it seemed a lot colder. Maybe it's a dry cold :P

Took the carbon fiber commuter on her maiden voyage, definitely have to tweak the seat up a touch, but other than that it did well. Love the way a 17lb bike climbs the hills!

fletchh 03-08-10 07:35 AM

It was a good ride in at -3 C (25 F). The weekend full of sun, and I was thankful for that. It is supposed to be the same today and tomorrow, then more moisture headed this way, but all in the form of rain.

vtjim 03-08-10 07:39 AM

Nice ride this morning. Light headwind and it feels like early spring. Mid 30sF. Tires quiet and drag free. :) Unfortunately I think I nicked my front tube putting them on yesterday. It's losing air. I pulled the wheel off and will just take it to the LBS to fix. I'm lazy and don't feel like battling to mount it twice in 24 hours.

Chalupa102 03-08-10 07:56 AM

A great commmute to school this morning feeling great. 36F when i left my house and it's currently 39F. Supposed to hit 53F for the high today. I switched my studded tires out for my slicks last night and i could tell i was a lot faster. Friday with the studs i did 14 miles in the first hour to school. Today without the studs i did a little over 15 miles in the first hour.

kokorozashi 03-08-10 07:57 AM

It doesn't get better than this morning, for me. Around 3 C/37-38 F, sunny, no wind, and a freshly-tuned bike (well, fairly fresh, anyway -- tuned it up this weeked). I wore shorts because Weather.com predicted it would be around 43, but I still wasn't cold. Probably looked kind of silly wearing shorts, a sweater, and gloves (my hands get cold easily), but then, I don't ride my bike to look cool :)

AdamDZ 03-08-10 08:13 AM

Absolutelyfreakingawesome!!!! Upper 40s, sunny. I could feel the warmth of the sun. I left earlier did a detour through Brooklyn to get a couple of extra miles in, then stopped at a park to relax and bask in the sun while looking at cagers sitting in the traffic on the bridge. Such a wonderful feeling! Why would I want to be on a train or bus?

RaleighComp 03-08-10 09:19 AM

51 degrees! First time on skinny tires this year, got to work 10 minutes quicker.

ItsJustMe 03-08-10 09:35 AM

First ride of the year with the studs off. 20*F this morning but it's supposed to be 50*F this afternoon! The ride was about 5 minutes faster than normal. Could have been better than that but I'm a bit sick today.

EKW in DC 03-08-10 09:41 AM

Warmest morning commute in quite some time! Looking forward to the 60ish degree temps for the ride home. I just wish the wind would take a break for a while. 15 with stronger gusts this morning - right in my face. I'm just tired of the windsock at the airport looking like this

with it blowing as a headwind. Oh well, beats 95 degree afternoons, so I shouldn't complain too much!

Rode almost 50 miles yesterday morning (WABA's Half Vasa ride, plus riding to and from Alexandria), so the 7 miles to work this morning seemed soooo short! :-)
