Timing is everything
As I got off the train to ride home, it had started raining. Everyone put things over their heads and ran like little sissies. I looked at the sky and figured it wouldn't last. I waited under the eve of the station house and got everything organized in my bag. 5 minutes later, it stopped raining. I rode home, averaging 15 mph and hit 27 mph at one point. (not easy on a heavy 3-speed!) Thanks again to the tail wind.
As soon as I got home, it started raining again, and went to the bike shop in the car to get a new saddle and another cage for the Searcher, 7 minutes before they closed. One would think that if there was a big rush of people right before closing time, they would realize it means they're not open late enough... Cleaned up the searcher just a little with some Falco on the boombox and a couple of beers to fuel me. I also bought a proper helmet; won't be using the cheapo Bell any more. It was good to get the Searcher running again after 3 years. I now have three operational bikes at one time, and it feels pretty strange. I've never had more than one at a time before this. |
didn't have to commute yesterday (Saturday) so I did a 50 mile road ride. Today rode in and worked until 2 pm then rode home and went out for a 30 mile road ride. That makes 2 weeks in a row of 200+ miles/week! Oh, how I love this time of year. Allergy has seriously kicked in so I'm a sneezing, coughing, red-eyed wretch but with a big smile on my face.:D

What's up with this weather?
:notamused: Low 70sF and humid. There was wind but it seemed to be at my side most of the time. I passed two older folks out for a morning ride together. There was one suicidal squirrel. Other than the relatively high (for this time of year) heat and humidity... A nice ride. |
Missing my ride this morning, our city is flooded and I will be working from home.
|
Heavy rain most of the way in this morning with some wind. I rode through a puddle under the train tracks that smelled suspiciously like pee--not happy about that! On the bright side, it's not supposed to be raining by 5pm, and I sure won't miss the fair weather cyclists on my ride home.
|
Despite the rain and high humidity, it was a great commute. Felt great on the ride as well. 69F with light rain and no winds.
|
Slight tailwind, drizzle, temps around 70. Miss the cooler temps of the early spring. Oh well. Nice ride in still. Not sure how long the rain is supposed to last today, but if it could keep at it until after my commute to reduce the traffic on the MUP, I'd appreciate it! ;)

A real wet one today, glad I had the foresight/time to re-install my fenders. Since it was already so warm and muggy, I decided not to even attempt to wear a rain coat, I figure a little rain is better than a lot of sweat. The ride was uneventful and my stuff is tucked beside me, in my cube, drying out, this includes the bike. Hopefully this lets up before the afternoon ride home. Gotta get new rubber for my bike as well as the wife's, her tires are completely dry rotted as the bike has been sitting under a cover in the back yard for about a year.

gray, 45F. Biked both kids (next to one, pulled other in trailer). Found cool new route for trailer, cut out one crazy intersection.
|
Rode the mtb today. Forecast calls for scattered showers and I didn't want to ruin the brand-new feel of my newly-repaired road bike.
First really humid day of the year. Came in dripping wet. The weather is supposed to improve as the week goes on. |
Much more comfortable on the ride home. Same temps but low humidity. A cold front pushed the moisture out. Unfortunately that meant I also got a headwind.
Silly Commuter Racing! First I reeled in a guy on a MTB and rode behind him for a little while, then he turned left. I checked my mirror and something was reeling me in! :speedy: I denied the person a catch. :p I was pushing low 20s MPH through a headwind that at one point was so loud, my ears hurt. The person drifted back until I slowed up for a stop sign, then I was getting close to my house, so I dialed it back a bit before turning onto my street. It never got much closer than when I originally spotted it. (~50 yards) I need a commuting buddy. |
Had an amazing ride home this afternoon and by far the best commute from my college to home ever. 70F with scattered rain and winds from the SW @ 5mph. The past few commutes i've been fighting for energy toward the end and feel worn out when i get home, but not today. I had more than enough energy and felt great the whole ride. I'm not sure if it was due to a tailwind, the new chain & RD that i installed this weekend, drinking Vitamin water during the ride, or a combination, but i had a lot of strength and power.

First workday of Bike Month. Noticed a few more riders this morning. Could have just been the spectacular weather too.
|
First time commuting in hot weather. It was 94 degrees when I left work. I slabed on some extra sunblock and changed from my work clothes to bike clothes. I Drowned a lake of water and off I went. it was fine, my time is getting shorter.
My only whine - There's a stretch that's on a slight incline that's killing me. I feel like I'm climbing a mountain. I'm beginning to dread that stretch of road. I can't take another route home. I can hardly wait for my one-speed trike to become a three speed. I also plan to change the tractor-style saddle to something more efficent. Hopefully all these future upgrades, besides my building endurance for cycling torture, will make my commute and cycling experience easier. |
Random Story:
Forecast was okay- good in the morning, 30% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. That's, like, 70% chance of no rain, right? I was up late last night, though, so I passed on riding in and drove instead. If had ridden I would have gotten wet... and cold too because there was about a 10 degree drop in temps with the front. |
Back after a few days of bikepacking on the C&O canal. It was nice sleeping on top of my bag in my underwear, as the weather was very nice. Probably should have taken a couple days off, as I am very sore. A nice warm ride in at 15 C (60 F). I am looking forward to a hot ride home, although my legs, no doubt, think otherwise.
|
IT Band seems much improved so I figured I'd give it a go and sure enough, no issues. I took the bike without the triple so the ride home will be harder due to the homeward hills, but I can do it. :-) Last commute was 2/2/10 and feels fun to be riding without so much clothing! woo hoo!
13.4 miles 30.6 max 14.7 avrg 54 min saddle time |
Nice ride in this morning. Sunny, mid-50sF. Saw some riders going the other way. Caught another one just as he was leaving the MUP. Supposed to be a strong tailwind for the ride home. :thumb:
|
46 so a little chilly still but can I say how much I am loving riding while the sun is rising? Beautiful.
|
beautiful beautiful beautiful in central CT, sunny 'n 70... rotator cuff healing up nice, herniated disc back in line... great commute in this morning on the SS
|
I like the rising sun too but the low angle I think can be dangerous cuz it blinds drivers, and maybe they can't see us
|
In a word... Humid. Still a good ride but even after a cold shower at the gym I'm still warm. Going to be hot and humid this afternoon for the ride home, won't be a dry article of clothing on me
|
A pleasant commute this morning, interrupted only by two police helicopters hovering overhead at 12th and Spring Garden St. I almost considered blowing the red light to avoid whomever they were looking for...
|
Odd commute. Sky was clear but it was cool, about 15 degrees cooler than recent mornings. At the river there was a dense patch of fog. I had no energy, yet I made pretty decent time. Just kind of a strange commute.

I drove yesterday because the forecast called for heavy rains and severe thunderstorms, but we ended up getting only a few sprinkles. So I rode today despite scattered showers and made it to work without a drop of rain. The weather is supposed to be great here for the rest of the week, but the forecasters are so bad that I wouldn't be surprised if we get a rainy day before the week is out. It has been very windy here for the past week. I thought March was supposed to be the windy month, but it was nothing compared to April and early May so far.
|
Fun bike ride today. According to the airport near work, sustained winds of 27 knots (31.1mph) and gusts of 39 knots (44.9mph). Lucky I didn't get blown away!

Riding the MTB yesterday gave me an even greater appreciation for my recently-overhauled road bike this morning. |

13.4 miles 30.6 max 14.7 avrg 54 min saddle time My commute last night took a turn for the worse when I realized that I felt a bit of a lump under my right foot as I pedaled that I normally didn't feel. Turns out the nylon or plastic resin or whatever my cheap-ass stock pedals are made of started to fall apart on the right pedal. Not bad - almost 3,000 miles for POS pedals on an X-box bike! Cannibalized the right pedal from another set I had laying around - so mismatched pedals for now. Left pedal of cannibalized set was already toast. Time to look for a set of metal platforms that I can use the toe clips on that I have. I'd consider clipless except for $$$ and the fact that my bike's pedals are 1/2" not 9/16". So I rode in today w/ my mismatched pedals. Bit of a headwind, warm, but not as muggy as yesterday. |
