Comfortable, 60sF, slight headwind. Sunny. Summer is back! :p Mid-to-upper 80sF most of this week.
School starts today, I think. I saw more younglings on bicycles than usual this morning. And there's this very cute woman runner, well I think likely she's "too young" for me, she's starting to recognize me and she always smiles and waves and says hi when we pass. I return the greetings and try not to crash into anything. :o |
This morning's madison commute
Warm, 72. Not much wind. Fast commute on a beautiful late summer day around the lakes. Starting to think about winter rig, unfortunately. The only negative was the 4 gang banger looking youths walking line abreast on the MUP when I came around the turn at 22 MPH. I yell "On your left" and they don't move. I look to the left, and pedestrians are walking in the opposite direction at well. I hit the brakes, and go far around to the right, almost losing it on the rough ground and rocks. I notice all four of the jerks are wearing headphones. I cheerily exchange pleasantries and take off again. That just pisses me off.

About 7C/45F this morning on wet roads. I lucked out as it had stopped raining before I started my commute, and didn't start again until after I got to work. Admittedly, when it's this cool and raining, I feel a little less motivated to ride, but then I remind myself that I almost never regret riding my bike. A bad day on the bike is still better than a good day on public transit.
Actually, riding home on Friday afternoon was a pretty bad day, particularly near home where there's something about the area where wind seems to get funneled down this one street I take. I had a good headwind most of the way home, but the last mile felt like a hurricane. I couldn't believe how hard I had to work to keep up a road-worthy speed and maintain a relatively straight line. I was really tempted to hop onto the sidewalk. |

Pretty cold this morning, or it felt like it anyway. I think this was the first 'cold' commute I've had since the summer. My ears were aching a bit when I got to work. I wore some bright white khaki pants and my right pant leg got quite chewed up in my chainring and is torn and black now. It was pretty windy as well.

Dead legs. Thank god for the tailwind.
|
Rode with my 5yo to his daycare today. Good practice for low speed balance! It took almost an hour to cover less than 3km! The rest of the way was quick and sunny. I wonder what tomorrow will be like? I have the same ride, but it's forecasting rain...
|
Bussed it with the girls for their first day of school as it was cold, wet, and drizzly then popped back home to get the bike... looks like the rain is letting up now so this afternoon's ride might be nicer.
One should not have to think about layers in August... |
Friday's commute: first of the year (HS teacher). 62 minutes in, 58 home. Today, raced a fixie rider across two towns (was beaten in the end when he took a shortcut). 56 minutes in, for an average of 18.2 mph over the 17.3 miles, including stoplights. All carrying coffee, lunch, and clothing...
It's good to be back! And wow is the weather nice. |
My first commute on the new build. I still haven't decided what to call it yet; Nashbar just sounds dumb.
A comparatively cold 57f at 7:30 this morning. Last week it was around 85f at that time. I broke out the arm warmers. After my weekend rides, my legs felt really dead on the way in. Coming home, I took the long way home and managed to add a whopping mile to the ride  It did however, incorporate a nice little hill. I quickly found my legs were still dead. Not approving of their whimpiness, I quickly punished them by gearing down to make it more of a challenge. |
Another hot week ahead here in NYC. I probably won't commute at all. I'm going to try and get a few rides in Prospect Park before work though, 15 miles or so. Forecast for tomorrow and Wednesday is 95. Ughh.
|
Just keeps getting better. 72f on the way in and only got up to 85 with very low humidity. Down right pleasent day and the next couple days prommisse more of the same. Ended up workign 3 hours of OT so most of my ride home was devoid of the typical Rushour. I could almost get use to that if it wasnt for beaing so beat from work.
|
And that is why I don't ride on bike paths. There are more strollers, walkers, roller bladders, and broken glass then any road I travel.

Pleasant weather even if the temp was supposed to hit 90+ today but it seemed less humid. It was still warm around 8pm for the return trip, not sure what the temp was but it was falling by then. I managed to suck up a bug and when I finally got it out of my mouth and took a deep breath I sucked up another one. I guess I've been lucky, I've managed to avoid these light snacks all summer.

Yep, for being hot during the day, it sure does get a bit chilly in the morning. Nice ride in, and only one bad driver, who decided to squeeze into a traffic calming area that is very narrow, at the same time I was in there. You have to wonder what planet these kind of folks are on. There was lots of traffic on an interstate below on one of my bridge crossings. I can never figure that out.

First official commute to work this morning after several weekend test runs. Rode 7.2 miles in 25-30 minutes and it was really nice out. Left house at 7am and it was 65 degrees and made for a nice ride. I filmed entire ride and looking forward to getting editing software so I can post. At least leaving early enough I can get past the only bad intersection on my route. I'm sure its been said before but drivers are more alert when they notice a camera on your bike.

Humid. Mid 70s. Not pleasant, but not bad either. Very hazy, too. Ran into a regular commuter close to home. Followed her for a bit, then passed. We exchanged hellos. I was feeling feisty. I reeled in another guy who was cruising at 16MPH. Decided that was too slow. Passed. Rode 20MPH for a while.
This year, my average commute times seem to have dropped significantly. I don't know why. I just got faster. |
I can't explain it either, but my commutes loaded with gear are just as fast as my weekend rides without... maybe I have "commuter legs?" Ride today was pleasant, for a change. Only got squeezed once at a stop light, but we were going like 5 MPH, not a big deal.
Yesterday, I got buzzed really close, the guy had to pass and turned off immediately at the plumbing store right there... when he got out, I recognized him as one of my friends, and called out to him. Come to find out, I told him later on Facebook "that was me" and he was so embarassed! He thought I was just yelling at him for his bad driving, and ignored me (which I was). Gave me a good laugh. |
Spent my lunch break yesterday pulling little pieces of glass out of my front tire. The close inspection of the tire led me to observe more degradation in the quality of the tread than I had thought there was. Still happy I got about 2500 miles out of a set of $10/ea. Nashbar tires. I'm thinking I may try some Vittoria Randonneurs for the next set, to be ordered this week.
Tire woes seemingly taken care of for the time being (knock on wood), I enjoyed my commute home last night. The ride in this AM was even better. A little warm, but not muggy at all, slight headwind. Averaged 15.1 over the 7 miles to work - one of the best overall averages I can remember. Timed the lights pretty well, too, such that my whole commute was less than 30 minutes. |
Ugh.... yet another flat. This time it was a punctured tire (second time this summer). What a pain. I haven't been satisfied with these tires this summer and I think it's time to invest in something better.

Great weather = Very nice ride in today. Got stuck behind a school bus for a short distance so took a slight detour. About a block from my building, I also almost hit a pedestrian, but that was more my fault than hers -- next time I give fair warning earlier. I am running an errand at lunch - going to get my bike fitted professionally. Since my knee injury in February, I'm taking all precautions so my knee doesn't hurt. I can put up with some pain, the after-riding kind of pain, but not the pain while riding. Two different things.

The thermometer on my house this morning read 2C/36F. Two degrees! It's still August, fer cryin out loud! I could even see my breath. It was a little warmer in the city center where I work. Still a nice ride in. Sunny and calm.

Glad I recently bought pepper spray. Sudo Bike: 1, Loose Pitbull: 0.
And Mr. I-Can-Park-In-A-Bike-Lane-Every-Day-Because-I'm-So-Special: Reported. |
Day off today, so no commuting. Just a good ol' fun ride with my pop then some errands later this afternoon.
|
52F and raining. Good day to ride solo (no kids)
|
Kinda humid this morning, but not as bad as it's been the last couple months. I wasn't trying to set any records, but I almost did. I wasn't timing my ride but when I texted my wife upon getting to work, she texted back, "That was fast!" I looked at the time and I think I was under 1:10, so I guess she was right. (My personal best is 1:06.)
|
My wife never says that.
|
A moderately wet ride in this morning. My son shaved 6 minutes off his time from yesterday, but he still refuses to ride on the downhills!

I hate wearing pants myself.
