Cold! Don't know why I thought I could get away with just fleece gloves in -7C/19F. Next time I'll wear my snowboard mitts, and maybe a balaclava. My face was pretty cold for the first 20 minutes. At least the roads and trails were dry.

daijoubu2k8 11-10-10 09:48 AM

Down to 4C/40F this morning. My shoes were still wet from the rainy ride home last night and that left me with some cold toes when I got to work! Took it easy today to let my legs rest.

cmolway 11-10-10 09:52 AM

Rainy commute for the second day in the row. At least the temps have stayed above 40F. Had a car try to squeeze by me in a, narrow single-lane, one-way, jersey barrier-lined contruction zone (I was in the middle of the road) on my way in this morning. After startling me, I rapped on her passenger-side window (she was that close) and told her to wait her f-ing turn (the narrow stretch was all of 200 yards long). I was probably doing 20+mph but I guess she just HAD to race to the red light ahead. Needless to say, she slowed down and dropped back behind me and a fellow roadie who was drafting me.

Honestly why is it that drivers insist on acting more reckless the worse the weather gets.

FunkyStickman 11-10-10 10:06 AM

Finally got back on the bike today, weather was 55F and foggy/muggy. Nothing unusual happened, but I was fully loaded with a change of clothes and lunch fixings.

Still loving it.

+ 3C this morning. Wore my thicker lycra pants for the first time today. 3 layer top. Short sleeved lycra, cotton long sleeve, then yellow windbreaker which is supposed to be breathable yet water proof. A toque on my head. After a few kms, I had to take off the short sleeve lycra and rode the rest of the way in with just 2 layers.

oban_kobi 11-10-10 12:05 PM

10C + shorts and loose synthetic shirt = perfect. I didn't ride yesterday *gasp!* because my legs were a bit tired from the past few days, took the bus. Not fun. :<

JimmyJars 11-10-10 12:43 PM

I did my first commute to work today over about 12 miles(each way). It's about 70F out in Houston and was pretty nice. Overall went without incident even though the one road that stopped me from commuting in the first place put up no challenge at all.

Steely Dan 11-10-10 12:57 PM

the 3rd charmed day in a row for bike commtuing here in chicago. 55 degrees and blue sunny skies, with a nice tailwind at my back riiding north up the lakefront.

i am totally in love with the concept of bike commuting with just shorts and a t-shirt in november in chicago. oh, were it only to last forever.

Grim 11-10-10 04:33 PM

Bahahah Only the second time I have done this since I started commuting....Unclipped the right foot and fell to the left . Took a bow rolled off to the side to straighten the bars.

Great commute home in the dark at 50F with winds from the NNE @ 16mph. Traffic was extremely heavy, especially once I got on Boston Rd. I had one particular traffic wave of about 20-30 vehicles in a row pass me, and about 1/2 of them were tailgating each other. Every time I shifted to a certain gear, I heard a squeaking sound. The weird thing is that is was only that one gear that was doing it, and no other ones.

oban_kobi 11-10-10 06:40 PM

My commute home is going to be a mix of pain and joy. About 15 mph wind, about most of it from the side, then most of it at my back after I turn with it. Only 2 miles into ~7mph, then ~13 tail wind!! Yay!

Amheirchion 11-11-10 05:39 AM

Today was Wet, Windy and Wmiserable.

It wasn't too bad on the way in as it was a nice tail wind for most of it, I only really noticed on one stretch when I realised pedalling was a lot easier, then looking at the speedo I was going 25 rather than my normal 20 for that stretch.
The journey home was horrible, into the very wind that had helped me earlier, not only slowing me down (I normally average 13mph on the way home, 14 if I'm going well, but today I only managed 10), but also blowing the rain into my face, my beard was drenched when I got home. Gladly though, my lady was waiting for me at home with a towel fresh from the radiator. <3

ryan.karr22 11-11-10 05:48 AM

I looked up to see a stopped bus in front of me with no time to break. sure i was riding to fast, close, it did not hurt that bad, but that damn bus driver was a dip sh@$

Fizzaly 11-11-10 08:09 AM

Chilly 28f foggy, damp, man my shoulder loves this stuff:)

groovestew 11-11-10 09:20 AM

I was all set to go this morning, went to fetch my bike out of the garage, and noticed the back tire was nearly flat. Slow leak, I guess. I just pumped it up a couple days ago. Put the bike back and took the bus instead. I'll figure out what's wrong with the tire this evening.

Buses stop. That's what they do. How does that make the driver a dipsh**?

no motor? 11-11-10 10:50 AM

Me too. I don't mind stopping to take off layers nearly as much as I do stopping to put them on.

Steely Dan 11-11-10 11:04 AM

^ and the good times just don't end. it was 57 degrees and blue sunny skies once again this morning. what the hell is going on?

one of these days old man winter is just gonna rear his ugly head and b!itch-slap us back into reality.

jdgesus 11-11-10 01:13 PM

my mantra this morning was "my headwind is someone elses tailwind..."

hoping that i get a tailwind on the way home tonite :)

Fizzaly 11-11-10 03:21 PM

Turned out to be a nice afternoon, i wasn't expecting much with this mornings coldness and thick wet fog, 45f a little sun, mostly overcast though, not bad about to head on home:)

No commute today due to the stat holiday, but I did a bit of shopping for some commuting gear. The Turbo Morph pump I ordered was in at the LBS. I finally got a pair of wind / rain pants, which I really could have used yesterday. A few pairs of polypro liner socks, since wearing cotton socks under my heavier polypro socks didn't work so well yesterday. Some felt / foil sole liners for my SPD shoes.

Monster Pete 11-11-10 04:03 PM

One word. WINDY! At one point on my commute I was going downhill with the wind at my back for once. I maxed out my gearing and felt no wind at all. Then a moment later the wind changed direction suddenly and it was like riding into a wall! I crawled upwind as if it was a mountain. Thankfully the winds had died down a bit by the evening when I came home.

Grim 11-11-10 04:41 PM

Screwy time of the year. Cold enough in the morning to need to cover your ears and break out warm gloves and a medium jack. Short sleeve for the way home. Still beats January. Was still a good ride.

daijoubu2k8 11-11-10 09:48 PM

Stat holiday today so no commute. Decided to clean and lube the chain today instead as it was getting a little noisy. Runs nice and quiet now.

Chalupa102 11-12-10 08:15 AM

Great commute at 35F and sunny with no wind. I got probably the highest average speed that I ever had with the trike on this trip in since I've started commuting with it. That's probably due to the fact that once I got onto State St, 2 of the lights that are always red were actually green, which was pretty nice. About 1/2 of my commute I was stuck in the middle chain ring on the crank. I have to figure out why exactly this happens and how to prevent it. I know it only happens in the cold weather and this isn't the only time that it's happened either. I also have that one certain gear that is still squeaking, even though I oiled the chain and derailleur last night.

cmolway 11-12-10 08:21 AM

gorgeous ride in today. Cold (37F) but clear, sunny and dry. My neighbor swapped out his road bike for a mountain bike with loaded-down panniers. Tough it took forever to get in today, we chatted and puttered (at least I did) at relaxing pace of 15mph. Didn't need to hit the shower at the gym when I got to my office for a change. Looking forward to cutting out early putting in some miles in this afternoon.

Fizzaly 11-12-10 08:55 AM

Almost felt warm 36f nice and crisp, no fog calm wind.

groovestew 11-12-10 09:33 AM

-2C/29F, which feels a lot warmer than -7C. Sluggish today for some reason.

HardyWeinberg 11-12-10 12:04 PM

34F and sunny

gecho 11-12-10 01:22 PM

-11C and icy on the way in, but my studded tires had excellent grip. My clipless shoes aren't big enough for the thicker insoles and 2 pairs of socks, so my feet got cold on the way in. On the way back I wore one pair and my feet were better. I used my rain shell as a windbreaker in the morning, but it trapped too much moisture.

-7C for the trip home. Last weekend I got an Outdoor Research Gorilla Balaclava. Its far too warm for current temps, so I added some velcro strips to my thin stretch balaclava so I can use the removable facemask from the Gorrila with it. Worked great as I could undo one side and let it dangle when I got too warm or was at a stop light.

My 2w Blaze headline is completely inadequate for spotting clumps of snow in the road that really should be avoided. On the way in the trip was 55min, in the daylight I was able to make the return trip in 46min.

Chalupa102 11-12-10 03:09 PM

Good commute this afternoon at 61F and sunny with winds from the NNW @ 7mph. The wind was mainly crosswinds, but when I got onto Berkshire Ave it seemed to slow me down a bit. Had a diesel pickup truck in the lane next to me hold back once the light turned green and then gun it to fill the air with black smoke. I'm not sure what he was trying to prove, but it was kinda silly.
