Another excellent commute home this afternoon at 51F and mostly cloudy with winds from the NNW @ 4mph. Definitely feeling like I'm on fire today. Made a PB on the way in, and also one on the way home cutting 5 mins from what it usually takes me on this commute. I even stopped at my friend's work on the way back so I could show her co-workers my trike. She's been asking for a while if I could drop by when I had the chance, and I finally was able to make it. It's right on my route, so I didn't have to go out of my way.

Nothing too terrible - it didn't seem like cars were having much trouble, but it looked to me like drivers were taking it a little easier today. About -0.5C/31F when I left home, but I think it was above freezing downtown.

As I left my residential area and merged onto the main road, I suddenly felt a tear emerge from my right eye. It was at least another 30 seconds before I realized I had forgotten my cycling glasses. Rode without them, but definitely prefer having them on.

I've been fighting putting on my studded tires until the end of the month but with the ten inches of snow we got last Saturday I may have to give in.

A beautiful fall night for the commute, around 40 degrees and clear skies. This is the last couple of miles of my ride. The cluster of lights on the horizon is the end of civilization and my work is about 1/2 mile beyond that. It is totally dark for the last little bit.

irclean 11-15-10 11:29 PM

I started my new placement today, but since I got a ride in I didn't take my bike; I am waiting until I get assigned a locker so I can change out of sweaty clothes. My new workplace has a fenced-in, locked compound for locking up bikes so I made sure to make a deposit and get a key before leaving for home today. After I got home I took a test ride to see how far it was and how long it would take me to get there. It's a short commute; 5.7 km (~3.5 mi.) and riding at a leisurely pace it took me 15 minutes, which translates to 22.8 kph (~14 mph). Figuring in a further 10 minutes to load/unload/lock my bike, another 5 minutes for incidentals, and a half hour for cooling down and getting dressed then I theorize I should be leaving for work 1 hour before the start of my shift. Probably the same amount of time I'd have to allow for public transit. Also, the one-time refundable $10 deposit for the compound key is a might cheaper than the $40 per month charge for a transponder to park my car in the parking garage (not to mention the expense of a second car). As an added bonus I get fresh air, exercise, and 30 solid minutes per day of endorphin-fueled meditation. It's not rocket science... and yet still folks wonder at my decision to commute by bike.

cyclokitty 11-15-10 11:56 PM

It was a dark ride home to tonight. And I found some new potholes. *sigh*

At least it is still mild weather. Each day I hope that this will be a dry winter.

fletchh 11-16-10 05:52 AM

Raining this morning, but not not heavy, just steady, and the temps are mild at 47 F ( 8 C). Traffic was a bit heavier than usual, and I can not account for that. They are promising me a wet ride home, but we will see.

Fizzaly 11-16-10 08:06 AM

Crazy warm 52f, a few showers mixed with 30mph wind which thankfully was mostly tailish wind

Doohickie 11-16-10 08:18 AM

The.

Wind.

Blows.

It took me an extra 20 minutes to get to work today in the face of a 13 mph headwind with gusts well into the 20s.

phillyskyline 11-16-10 08:51 AM

Light rain this morning, which made me a bit nervous--my brakes need adjusting and I forgot to do that last night. Got cut off by a SEPTA bus, otherwise it was a quiet and pleasant commute. This afternoon the rain is supposed to pick up.

groovestew 11-16-10 09:49 AM

Chilly and breezy with a few flurries, -7C/19F. Felt like a tough slog today. At least I dressed appropriately, but just barely. Any colder and I'll have to add layers. I didn't see any other cyclists on the roads or trails this morning...I'm sure they were out there, but in fewer numbers.

cmolway 11-16-10 10:01 AM

raining and 48F temps had me dressing out for the ride in this morning. By the time I rolled out however, the rain had stopped and the temps even warmed up a bit. Found myself shedding layers and arriving to work in just a SS cycling jersey and shorts. Pretty crazy for mid-November up here in Boston.

I only saw 4 cyclists this morning... and I live on a bike route.

It is going to get so much uglier this week... lows are supposed to be -17C.

Ugh. I see a bus in my future.

EKW in DC 11-16-10 11:18 AM

Rainy and cool. I actually enjoyed it once I got calmed back down from the ****** in an Acura who decided he couldn't wait until I was all the way over into the bike lane and passed me with about a foot to spare as I transitioned into the bike lane from the sharrow space where I was taking the lane. I know that three seconds he must have saved himself by driving like a ****** were very important to him - more important in fact than my safety or the safety of others on the road on this rainy AM with less than ideal travel conditions. I just don't understand people sometimes. Why the huge rush, dude? Why? And why the f-ing attitude and look back over your shoulder at me when I raised an arm in disgust that you had just driven like a tool - a look suggesting that I was somehow in the wrong... http://bit.ly/a0tqZl

Oh well. After I got over my urge to do something I wasn't sure what to the guy's car or at least give him a piece of my mind, I got back into enjoying the ride. Cool November rain, the smell of wet leaves in all their vibrant yellows and reds, that sweet sound of bike tires spinning along wet asphalt. The rain seems to be going away. If the ride home is anything like the ride in, I'll have the MUP largely to myself. I love this time of year. :)

gecho 11-16-10 11:24 AM

The temperatures for both rides today were hovering around freezing, wet and messy everywhere. I was a bit too warm on the ride in. Lots of honking in the park today, but it was just the geese.

puppypilgrim 11-16-10 12:35 PM

About 8-9C this morning. Had a great ride in and got to test my road new spaced cassette (12-21T) on an MTB long cage derailleur.

For you! I fought that wind all the way to work this morning! I still say tail winds don't exist in Idaho. :)

Made my 8 miles ride into a 45 minute one, and I was even hitting stoplights correctly. Can't wait till they're done with that pedestrian bridge on the greenbelt.

That and I still can't get my dress right. I keep overheating.

You are right the wind has changed several time this afternoon, as it is now im facing a brisk head wind going up to the bench. Im just wearing the shorts still, wear legwarmers in the morning and my rain/wind shell, and then removing said layers to go home. Im really thought fall hit, but i guess im wrong though i can live with it being 50f in the morning

Fizzaly 11-16-10 07:23 PM

Yup every direction i turned was straight into the wind it was nice out though 57f nice view from up on the bench

Great commute today except for the glare ice on the Sabo bridge this morning. I got through it unscathed.

L.L. Zamenhof 11-17-10 01:05 AM

This morning it was nice. Not terribly cold, and a north wind (I head straight south). However, as the day grew later, the wind got stronger, and the last two legs of my day's riding was fairly breezy, although it was unseasonably warm.

fletchh 11-17-10 05:54 AM

It is a strangley warm morning at 55 F ( 12 C). Lots of branches, leaves and limbs down all over the place. I rode in the road when possible as the leaves are in piles everywhere. Something must have rolled through last night or early morning. Going home will be difficult as leave cover tends to hide broken glass. Lots of spooked drivers as well, I saw one driving on the wrong side of the road.

cmolway 11-17-10 07:14 AM

Agreed. Unseasonable temps of 57F up here in New England as well. Pouring rain when I got up had me dreading the ride in. Luckily I caught a break in the weather and it stopped raining until I got to my office. Riding in shorts and a SS jersey in November feels wrong somehow.

Fizzaly 11-17-10 08:00 AM

Windy morning 41f wasn't as lucky today had about a 15mph headwind, nice morning though.

Chalupa102 11-17-10 08:04 AM

Great commute this morning in the rain at 51F and winds from the SSE @ 5mph. I changed my FD cable last night, but unfortunately I adjusted it incorrectly. It seemed good last night but this morning I could not get into the large chain ring. It was even difficult going from the small to the middle ring. I'll have to fix that before I head home this afternoon.

CptjohnC 11-17-10 08:18 AM

Hot and humid! Okay, maybe not ~hot~ exactly, but definitely too warm for November. Should have left the tights off, and probably could have done without the wind layer for the most part. Generally a pleasant ride, though plenty of wind to slow me down (not that I ride all that fast). Also, lots and lots of wet leaves. Am I the only one who finds the wet, slippery leaves treacherous? On a positive note, my fenders did a great job of keeping the muck and grime from the puddles off of me and my stuff. Money well spent, I think.

Nasty line of storms came through DC around 1:15 AM. I heard Baltimore got hit pretty hard, too, so I'm guessing Columbia didn't escape unscathed either. Lots of trees and branches down in this area. I didn't personally see any trees, just lots of branches, but several roads or stretches of roads were closed in DC this AM due to downded trees (e.g., Rhode Island Avenue through NE.)

Indeed. Very warm this morning. And windy!!! Shorts and a short sleeved tee in mid-November, and I still got pretty sweaty on the way in. Nice ride, though. Too bad the storms last night blew off so much of the pretty foliage. Glad I was able to enjoy it while it lasted. Lots of bare trees now.

No. Slow down if necessary. They're an accident waiting to happen.

Indeed. Fenders rock.

daijoubu2k8 11-17-10 09:29 AM

A warmer but damp ride in this morning. Windy coming up the mountain too. Made it to work before the door to the underground had opened so I dragged my wet bike through the front lobby...
