Dude it was a treasure map.... Follow the clues it takes you to Herndon and you get a pet skunk :)

Decided to try to hammer the short route in to work as I had to drop my son off at the time I usually start work. I did pretty well, passing a lot of traffic down Cariboo Hill and setting a new personal best for the route on this bike. A touch over 38 minutes. Should be good for a few points in the virtual TdF!

Killed it on the Airport Ride last night so I took it super-easy this morning. You have to go slow to go fast.

My commutes were...Interesting, on the average.

Nothing exciting on the morning commute...But this afternoon, riding on one of the multi-use paths on Camp Lejeune, I happened upon a young woman taking phone-pictures of herself. I was coming from behind, so I'm not exactly sure what she was doing, but she dropped both arms across what appeared to be a chest with the shirt strategically pulled down. Scared the crap out of her, too.

Other than that, it was a normal sweaty NC afternoon commute.

Dang - I guess you're the "winner" ; )

Cool, but humid as heck. You know it's humid when your glasses fog over just cruising along at a sane speed...

Yeah, learn from my fail too... When ya wrap up a critter in your chain, you might want to take a close look at whether it did any damage. Because if you don't, and you're hammering up a big hill the next day (Custis Trail) and the chain snaps when you're standing and hammering, it takes about two days for the boys to recover from the shot they took on the top tube:(

OUCH!!! I guess I won't whine (too much) about my mishaps this morning. While climbing a hill (Custis Trail) my rear derailleur cable broke and threw my cluster into the smallest cog. So I rode the rest of the way single-speed. Ride home this pm is going to suck!!

CCrew- hope it wasn't your Fuji...

An eerie red and gray sky surrounded me as I rode in this morning. It cleared slightly as the sun rose but seem to foretell of severe weather. The wind was brutal and either directly or quartering into my face. As I gain fitness, though, the wind bothers me less an less. I do end up going pretty slow, though. The last few miles, particularly, slowed me down.

I watched as Meadowlarks tried to fly away as I approached. After testing the wind for a second, they though better and rode the wind to pass me by my side.

I ended up making it to work in just under 50 minutes.

First commute after a week of vacation. I got welcomed back with a downpour, too. Yay. Temps in the mid 60s.

The one time I had a chain snap I went headfirst over the handlebars and scraped the s**t out of my shoulder--one of the worst road rashes of my career. I think I'd take bouncing the boys off the top bar. The road rash hurt for weeks. :(

No commute Friday as I worked from home. Nothing to report today; still riding my "dual-speed" so I took the short route.

Oh yeah it's gonna suck. I gave up Friday and called Mama and got her to bring the car. And it was the Fuji, but the cross bike, not the carbon one.

12C and wet this morning.

Nice ride in this morning, once I actually got going. I had changed my front tube back over to a presta valve on Saturday night after getting my valve saver adapters for the Schrader rim. Didn't ride yesterday, got downstairs to the bike this morning, and found that the front was flat. Long story short, some of the tube appeared to have gotten pinched in the valve saver, which had caused a small hole in the tube. Installed new tube (better this time and no issues w/ pinching and fortunately in the relative comfort of the basement of my apt. building w/ all my tools and my good floor pump at hand) and was finally able to go.

So all that after a late start to the morning, and I was about an hour behind schedule. The ride itself was real nice if a little warm. Made really good time.

I spent much of the ride continuing to ponder a complete replacement of my drivetrain and shifters from low-end Tourney and Acera components to something better. My POS drivetrain is having issues - I don't think it was designed to go 4,000+ miles of all-weather commuting.

Ironic that the "valve saver adapter" caused the flat. I didn't even know such things existed; I ride presta valves on Schrader rims on my MTB and haven't had a problem. Is this something I should be concerned about?

I bought a Fuji Touring a few years back and used it as my every-day commuter. I had seemingly endless problems with the drivetrain on it and had the same thought. Now that the shifter on my current commuter is shot I'm giving single-speed serious thought because I'm becoming convinced that NO drivetrain is really intended for that kind of use. At least, not without a lot of maintenance, and I'm so inept at this kind of thing that doing the work myself just isn't an option. :(

HardyWeinberg 07-19-10 10:26 AM

50F and misty. Supposed to crack 70 by 5pm, we'll see.

AlmostTrick 07-19-10 10:44 AM

I installed a new headset on the Marin last night. It didn't self destruct on the ride in today so that's good. I did manage to get stung by a bee though. OUCH!!! It was on the inner thigh and my shorts were aggravating it while pedaling so I went flamboyant and rolled that side up all the way!

Yeah, irony at its best, combined w/ some late night bike maintenance (I swapped out the tube at like 2 AM on Saturday night/Sunday morning after a shift outr pedicabbing. I was trying to do it in a big rush, so it's my fault. I wouldn't be concerned about not having the adapter on your MTB. I've read of lots of people who do the same as you and never have problems. I just wanted a good snug fit for the valve. I'd been using a vinyl wiring grommet from Radio Shack for a few months, but it wasn't cutting it anymore, so I decided to get the valve savers.

Single speed intrigues me and I've considered trying to build up a SS on an old road bike frame (I have a soft spot in my heart for Peugeots), which I could use for my commute - which is pretty flat. My current (read only) bike is a hybrid and I plan on doing some touring with it, so making it a SS is out of the question. Preliminary online research shows I could buy an entire Alivio drivetrain (minus crankset) for about $100 (maybe less w/ a litte "help" from my friend who works at an LBS and can sometimes get me the discount), and I could do the work at the co-op for a $10 suggested donation for the stand time...

Kotts 07-19-10 11:49 AM

72 degrees and HUMID. My bike was getting wet from the water vapor in the air.

After picking up my bicycle from the bike shop, Shimano Soras had been installed, I road down 2nd Ave. and over the Manhattan Bridge which was new to me. I found it out to use the Soras at first but acclimated on the ride home and realized the Soras seem to push me to ride faster now that I'm able to shift more continuously.

The Manhattan Bridge is great until the trains go by, then it is tooth jarring. That's my regular route, from 42nd and 2nd down 2nd to the bridge and then Navy St, Myrtle Ave, Vanderbilt to Prospect Park and out the other side, sometimes taking other streets through Ft Greene.

I live in Queens and am taking a summer class in Brooklyn, so my usual route is riding along the east river on Kent Ave and Flushing Ave. Unfortunately I took public transportation today to be able to get my bike. Can't wait for tomorrow though.

Ever had one of those days where ya felt like you were wearing concrete shoes? Usually I'll spin it off after 5 or so miles if it happens, but I never got rid of it today at all. I'm thinking it's just the almost oppressive humidity..

neilfein 07-20-10 04:58 AM

I escorted my wife to the train station this morning, for what I realized is her first-ever bike commute! (She doesn't usually take the train to work, but this gig is in the city.) She used my old folding bike as a beater to lock up at the station.

vtjim 07-20-10 06:01 AM

Cool enough (63F) but humid (100%). I keep a can of Monster in a bottle holder on the back of my trunk bag. It was dripping condensation on my fender. There was a very light quartering headwind.

I saw several cyclists going the other way, including one very cute blonde. Only one cyclist going my way. I caught up to him just before he turned. Oh I also caught a woman on a pink cruiser right before I arrived at the office. Cool bike. It rattled too much though. :p

tarwheel 07-20-10 06:03 AM

I let the forecasters scare me into driving yesterday, and I missed the nicest weather of the week. Nice is relative since it still got up to 93 F with high humidity, but the rest of the week is supposed to have high temps ranging fromthe upper 90s to low 100s, with high humidity, and heat indexes ranging from 100-110.

Actually, it didn't take much to talk me into driving yesterday because I was tired from paddling 3.5 hours on Saturday and riding 3.5 hours on Sunday. I got caught in a huge thunderstorm while paddling, and cooked in the heat on Sunday. So I was very susceptible to the forecasters calling for widespread thunderstorms in the afternoon, even though it was very clear in the morning. I don't know what happened to the thunderstorms, but it was clear all day.

genel 07-20-10 07:04 AM

Hadn't planned on riding today, but the nice temps, and light wind were too tempting. I'll risk the chance of rain later. I forgot the water bottle, so stopped at Walgreens. THey were just putting out a display of dark choclate peanut butter cups so I bought one. Won a $50 gift card!

I think this is gonna be a good day.

mjw16 07-20-10 07:15 AM

Yesterday's ride home was tough, I guess the heat got to me more than I anticipated; felt sluggish and weak. This morning's ride was better but, I didn't have much in the tank. I picked it up a little bit near the end of my ride but, overall, it's always preferrable to taking Metro. I'll leave a little early tonight and will have an opportunity to take a shower and nap when I get home, a rare treat. My wife will be picking up our son and I'm off to a concert--I'm sure it'll be a late night, we'll see how I feel tomorrow.
