A little windy today and, of course, darker, but also a little warmer. I got by without wearing my underlayer of knit gloves this morning.

The commute is getting a little easier as my legs start to remember what it takes to get up hills.

I am still getting used to my new Sparrow bar.

HardyWeinberg 03-15-10 10:50 AM

44F sunny clammy

overslept 2 hrs today instead of the traditional one.

HardyWeinberg 03-15-10 11:31 AM

Also, feeling fade-y, going to add a tooth on the rear cog I think.

caloso 03-15-10 11:37 AM

Beautiful. 47F, calm, gorgeous pink and orange sunrise, mist rising on the American. Met up with two buddies for a pre-work ride.

Life is good.

buzzman 03-15-10 08:45 PM

windy!

right in the face the whole ride in and off the back and shoulder on the ride home. Really strong gusts. I was dodging run away umbrellas down Commonwealth Avenue. Came back on the bike path met up with another cyclist on similarly outfitted rig- a little more upscale than my bike but nice set-up. Flooding everywhere.

BUT used my new rain gear- a Shower's Pass Elite jacket with hood and my new paclite Gore Tex pants- both performed beautifully in a constant downpour arrived at work dry and got home dry- bravo!

FreddyV 03-16-10 02:00 AM

During the past night it rained quite a bit. Some parts of the bike paths were flooded, but I managed to get to work dry. Apart from the sweat obviously. Temperatures are rising. As it was still -2C last week during the night, temperatures are actually +5C during the night, and will rise during the day to an actual +15C! Time to shave the legs and get the shorts back out of the drawer :)

fletchh 03-16-10 04:32 AM

A quiet ride at 5 am with the temp at 2 C ( 37 F). There were more cars today, than yesterday, but still light. Maybe the time change. The rain has stopped and now I am looking forward to the sun.

jhhall 03-16-10 05:43 AM

Nice ride this morning - while dark it was DRY!!! Well, at least there wasn't any rain falling on me I did splash around in a few puddles though. Looking forward to the ride home - should be 60!

The floodwaters are receding, and my -- how everyone's mood has suddenly improved. I got out earlier than usual this morning and was treated to eerily calm streets. I'm contending with the remnants of some sort of flu bug, and it's left me a little queasy; yet riding is the one thing that gets me feeling better! I wonder if anyone else has noticed this phenomenon. :)

Even though the Nor'easter didn't end until after at least about 8:00 PM last night, the city streets I ride were dry enough by about 5:30 this AM that I was comfortable riding my pristine road bike. I thought maybe the sand would have been washed off the Jamaica Pond Bike Path by all the rain, but there still was a lot. I did encounter a stretch of wet road about a few hundred yards long in Norwood that had me ride near the center of the road. Various car drivers reported that there was flooding south of Norwood.

Hope you get better well soon and glad to hear cycling is therapeutic. The only thing that keeps me off the bike for more than two consecutive days is illness.

asharx 03-16-10 07:58 AM

1st commute of the season! I definitely over dressed, which I found out halfway through my ride.

I went to take my (new to me) road bike out this morning. When I tried to fill my tires with air there was nothing coming out of the presta hole, just the schrader hole. In effect I ended up with deflated tires, and defaulted to my mtb bike. Which in hind sight was a good thing based on all of the crud that is on the roads right now.

Pig_Chaser 03-16-10 08:01 AM

+0.8C!! First positive temperature (in the morning) of the year. Calling for a high of +12C.

jrjwoodsman 03-16-10 08:18 AM

Awsome ride in yesterday morning, about 35F and clear. Don't know if I am just getting my attire dialed in or getting in better shape, but I didn't hardly sweat this morning. Great ride home, first time wearing shorts instead of tights. Had some great scenery while cruising through downtown and thru the college campus on the CT ;-). People are all smiles when the weather warms up.

EKW in DC 03-16-10 08:20 AM

The threat of rain has finally passed and the forecast for the rest of the week is looking awesome! The river is receding, but I still took a detour to avoid the parts of my commute closest to the water just in case. Highs by the end of the week are supposed to be in the upper 60sF (~20C). Now let's just hope that the spring weather hangs around for more than a couple weeks. This are has a tendency to go from cold and rainy to hot and humid REAL quick... too quick.

Anyway, the commute was good. As usual, a highlight of my day.

rhm 03-16-10 08:26 AM

Oh, man.. that was one brutal, brutal headwind. Struggling to stay over 12 mph. I just hope it doesn't turn around before I ride home!

groovestew 03-16-10 08:41 AM

Glorious. Perfect temperature (just above freezing). Some major melting on Sunday and Monday means my commute is nearly ice-free, except for about a kilometer section in the river valley. A slight south breeze gave me a whiff of the Safeway bakery: mmmmmm. (Much better than the Subway bakery.) Heard an owl. I also heard an ominous squeak, once per pedal revolution. Turns out my sneaker was rubbing on the crank arm. Pretty easy fix. Brought shorts for the ride home, because it's supposed to reach 12C/54F this afternoon.

At a traffic light downtown, a car pulls up beside me and rolls down his window. I'm thinking, great, first yelling at of the season. Turns out he's a fair-weather cyclist, and was wondering how I'm finding riding these days. I told him the weather is beautiful and encouraged him to get back on his bike.

arch2wheel 03-16-10 09:41 AM

Second day in a row commuting this week. 58 degrees, shorts and t-shirt. School and university out for spring break and drivers seemed slow and disoriented. In other words, I had the road to myself today save for one other commuter which was nice to see.

HardyWeinberg 03-16-10 09:59 AM

42F, grey. Last night, 60F sunny, 1st shorts and t-shirt leg of the year.

Catgrrl70 03-16-10 10:30 AM

Last night it was around 63 when I left work. Springlike! Just amazingly nice. But I had a headache, and I have to remember not to ride with one b/c it's so distracting. Then the batteries in my camera died. Left it on all night so they were drained. Ugh. But today it was again warm, an amazing 50 when I left the house at 6:30 am, and I got to work in about 35 minutes. A fast day! Traffic mayhem is starting on part of my route though b/c of roadway construction. I had to do a little detour for the first time b/c traffic was blocking a good crossing area...only more of that to come.

asphalt junkie 03-16-10 10:36 AM

My evening commute has improved significantly. Watched the sun set yesterday evening as I pedaled around 6:45, and saw kids playing ball in the parks. Magnificent.

Kamala 03-16-10 12:09 PM

Nice first commute from my new house! 7.6 miles, low 50s out, rain held off for the morning. Don't think I'll be so fortunate on the way home.

Surfindixon 03-16-10 01:50 PM

The best wind conditions ever (apart from there being no wind). Heading west in the morning...wind at my back. heading east to go back home at the end of the working day and....THE WIND WAS AT MY BACK!!!!!! That kind of luck rarely happens. Usually it's wind in the face both ways. Or that's what it feels like.

Bike's running well. Managed to put 44.6 miles on the clock. Feeling good.

grandjeanius 03-16-10 02:43 PM

Great! First commute of the year (I'm a wimp about my 13 mile one way in the cold). Great weather, great ride. I chose to take my Fixed gear today though.. that was a bit painful after not doing much riding over the winter. W&OD was clear Ashburn to Reston.

Grim 03-16-10 03:51 PM

Nice day for a ride. Kind of sucked starting in the dark again but nice to have the daylight in the evening. Just warm enough not to need a jacket.

Came home to a sick kid in a pissy mood that has been pissing off her mom for the last 4 hours. I think I may just go take of some of that day light and either get in some more mile or go out to the garage and build some wheels now that I have the correct length spokes.

As someone who tends to get to work later and stay later, I love Spring DLS. Managed to catch the sunset at the top of the climb on the way home. Photo is looking at San Francisco from the Oakland Hills.

wow. great weather today. nice ride.

fletchh 03-17-10 04:27 AM

It was a colder 2 C ( 35 F) this morning. Traffic is back to normal, and yesterday afternoon was beautiful, and that is supposed to contine for the rest of the week.

Damn that's a great view from out there. Damn you're far from the city. I never did make it far far east when I lived briefly in SF.

Today's commute was a perfect low 20s Celsius. Sunshine with scattered clouds. Worse than usual traffic in downtown Sydney.

tarwheel 03-17-10 05:19 AM

I got up extra early so I could ride to work this morning, and then realized I had forgotten the key card for my office building. I would have no way in my building without it, so I had to drive. (I have to enter the building through a different door on my bike and nobody else arrives as early as I do when I ride.) A real bummer because the weather is supposed to be beautiful today, sunny and warm. Oh well, two more work days of nice weather ahead this week.

ortcutt 03-17-10 07:03 AM

Beautiful ride in. Had the satisfaction of pedaling right past the queue of cars immobilized on the BU Bridge. Of course I then had to contend with the notorious intersection at Comm. Ave, with its crowds of BU undergrads trundling off to class (many of them oblivious, being plugged into their mp3 players and smartphones). Some of them might be my students, and I'd rather not be recognized; so I had to play it cool. :)
