34F, peasoup fog
|
My first commute of the year! It was 44F and I managed to dress appropriately so I was neither too hot or too cold, except for my ears and fingertips but they always bother me so that was nothing new. My bike is in great shape because of the maintenance from my LBS - new chain, brake cables/pads, etc. Aerobically, I felt great because of my off-season work but unfortunately my bad knee is really bothering me. It was a bit painful so I took it easy on the ride in. I saw a lot of other commuters, including two large groups of guys riding together and passed me without warning (a little annoying). Anyway, it was great to be on the bike, and hopefully my knee will get with the program soon.

Dead calm and 57F this morning. Perfect. And now it looks like the wind is kicking up for the afternoon and it will actually be a tailwind!!!!
Somebody up there likes me. |
My first commute of the season too! let later than I wanted after planning most everything out last night and still got in and ready on time. Had to stop and upzip the legs of my pants, it's great to be back in the saddle again!!!!

Strange midwest weather. All week the morning commute has been in the 40's with the trip home ranging from the 40's to the 50's.
This morning it was about 34° and will be over 60° on the way home tonight. Tomorrow should be similar but snow is forecast for Saturday. |
No wind at all today :) I was happy to finally get my fenders on even though it didn't rain.

Nice 10degc strong southerly today. Pleasant enough cycle under an overcast sky with little hold up throughout the 19 mile trip in (lucky with traffic lights and traffic flow. Also featured a luck of insane / impatient drivers) so made good time. Worked late so cycled from Paisley to Glasgow then got the train home to the SE of Glasgow. Wanted to do the full monty but time was pressing on. had a nice coffee in Central station and read Private Eye (satirical mag) on the way back on the train. Yep! All in all it was very pleasant. Missed the down pours too. Bonus. 32 miles on the clock. I must say Bugly64 I'm looking forward to a set of mudguards/fenders as i'm sure the lack of them throughout the salt laden winter hastened the demise of my headset (bottom of)

My first ride since July 29, the date of my accident. I have been wanting to ride ever since I got out of the hospital, today was the day. Good weather, warm temp, and light wind. I'm a bit out of shape but I'll get it back soon enough. I rode my backup bike till my new build gets delivered. I'm wary of cars, I don't trust them. I have had too many close call in the past and although I can't recall my accident I am aware what they can do to you. I'm so happy!
|
Nice experience this am. I overtook two other cyclists and said "good morning" to each. I hardly ever see anybody during my commute, so it was a nice Copenhagenizing moment on Preston Hgwy in Louisville.
|
Nice ride in this morning, although it was hard getting up. My body still hasn't gotten used to the time change, even though I've been getting up at 5:30 am all week. We've had big swings in temperatures between morning and afternoon, typically about 30 F, which makes it hard to dress. Temps were in the upper 30s this morning and are supposed to hit 70 this afternoon. I'm not complaining though. That's part of what big seatbags are for - to carry all of the clothes and gear you shed in the afternoons.
|
-8C this morning brrr. Faced a heck of a headwind all the way in too.
|
Morning Ride: 22 miles with a 20mph westerly in my face. Aaaarrrgghhhh!!!!!! Men do cry!!!!!!! I was fit for bed when I got into work!
|
First ride in on my new 2009 Fuji Comp Cross. Put fenders, rack, panier, lights, etc on it. Had such a great ride, I was using a Dahon Speed 7 (which was surprisingly good, but there is no comparison).
Beautiful weather up in Northern VA. |

Chilly but nice this morning. I started off a little sore and slow after a late start. Some roadie picked my pocket for a while before deciding to pass. I dropped in behind him for a little pull. I passed him on the 14th Street Bridge and accelerated. He fell in right behind me so, I went up a couple of gears. I inadvertantly shifted up into too high a gear and it took me a little longer to really get on top of it. He stayed right on my wheel for a while but then dropped back a ways and turned off to, presumably, do laps at Hain's Point. I'm glad he did since I was a little gassed at that point. Took it easy and spun the rest of the way in, had a nice conversation w/ another rider and am looking forward to the 70 + deg ride home.

Mid fifties, sunny, calm breeze. Good times.

Super mellow. Racing both days this weekend so I didn't even break 15mph on the way in.

Rusty...
No, not the bike, me! Because of my work schedule I didn't get int ot he gyum as much this winter as in previous years, and I felt it this morning on the commute. Not quite as much horsepower in the engine as I'm used to. It'll come back though...
Nice ride, anyway |
spin class kicked my butt yesterday so today's ride in was taxing... but not as bad as last nights ride home.
|
Dark and peaceful one hour ride watching sunrise to the east. Starting to get faster again.
|
Yesterday pleasantly cool with a stop by the LBS to order handlebars that will hopefully not aggravate my wrist injury so I can get back in the saddle full-time. Within 1/2 a mile of each other, I had two people yell at me to get off the road. I think it was a total of three people for the whole trip. I bet I know the traffic law better than they do... :-D
Today the weather is nice while standing still but a little warm while riding. No yellers, no trip to the LBS. My average speed is picking back up but my wrist can't handle much more than 3 miles. I finally start therapy for the wrist later this month. |
26F this morning and it felt like 1F. I should have wore my long johns. Once again there wasn't any wind, but it only got up to 39F. I hauled 20lbs of cat litter, 2 one gallon milks and other groceries home for the weekend. The Big Dummy handled it like a champ. I still haven't tested the fenders yet.

Same old slop, all week long, here in Anch. 30*F in the morning, 40*-45* coming home. MUP's too soft to ride, huge puddles and hidden ice ruts underneath them in the streets. It turns out that my Gore-tex winter boots are only snow-proof, not water-proof. So I've been cycling in rubber boots, which have no grip on ice, and carrying a change of shoes in the panniers. Had the first crash of the year last night, riding into a 2 inch tall ridge of ice with a full load of groceries and one hand off the bars to signal my stop to nobody. I've been trying to signal regardless of whether there's other traffic about, but I really could've used both hands on the bars instead of one on and one signaling to the empty air. Broke a growler full of beer, put a hole in a pannier with the broken glass, and lost a few spuds under suspicious of maybe have glass shards in them. Spring sucks. Always has, always will. |
Day 2 of my return to riding. Last night there was a nip in the air on my way home at 2am. On the way in it was just like yesterday, warm with a light breeze.

Dude that sucks. I mean the beer man! Hope your ok ,but the beer, Dang. All because you were being a decent cyclist, when all the friggin cagers are trying to kill you (us), and you practicing hand signals and all. It's sad. Hope you have a better weekend, as for the frosty carbonated adult beverages, I think I will have a few in memory of their fallen breathern. :-)> |
Its funny because on my commute to this job (I have at least two, sometimes more; plus grad school) I never take the same route to work as I do home. Its only a quick shot downtown, so I will cut straight there down this sidestreet that the city is working on* on my way there but on the way home I will take a slightly more roundabout way because riding downtown at 9:30-10pm is SO relaxing!
*That sidestreet that the city is working on is an interesting project. Mainly because it has been 2+ months with no discernible change in the road. There is a 40 foot stretch that there is no pavement, just dirt and rocks. Thats a fun part of the commute... |

I'm back on the fence about signaling when no one's around. I've got a mirror, so I always know if someone's back there and if I need to signal. I thought that signaling every time would help solidify the habit so that I wouldn't need to think about, but I feel kind of foolish when no one's there. Plus, I hate signaling that I'm stopping, 'cause it takes a hand off the front brake while I'm trying to stop. I only started after almost getting rear-ended by a couple of cagers who apparently thought I was just going to run the stop sign. Oh well, no bodily harm done, no sense of karmic foul. I'm off to replace my growler before the bar closes. |

Thanks for the commiseration! It was very sad to have to dump all that beer out of the bottom of the pannier.

Signaling can be a tad dangerous using one hand to control a loaded bike or not, and the cagers still think your just a hindrance to them. I'm sick of that attitude as I'm sure must cyclist are. Keep up the being a good biker, and using proper etiquette. Someday it will be normal. When I ride past the gas station lately and a gallon of gas cost $3.25, I just laugh at the fools who are flippen me of and cutting me off. I'm just getting in better shape to kick their ass when the time comes. Not a violent person , but then again I won't back down either. Surrond that Growler with a jacket to protect you in case of another fall. Later :-)> |
A very nice warm rainy ride in at 10 C ( 50 F). It started off with a drizzle, then got a bit heavier half way into the ride. My legs just love this warm weather, because they work so much better in warm weather. I also like getting back to how ever temporary, to sleeveless too.

First day back from vacation in Denver. :thumb: Nice city. Single speeds and fixies everywhere. We were hanging out at The Great Divide and a bunch of guys showed up on their bikes. I was jealous. For several reasons, my wife and I were taken with the city and are seriously considering a move.
Commute-wise, I think I was acclimatized to the mile high altitude because I had my fastest ride of the year this morning, without wind. It's a little bit foggy and in the low 30sF. I heard geese but they were in the clouds and I couldn't see them. I also saw a loon floating in the lake. Back to work. :crash: |
