super super nice weather the last two days mid 50s in morning low 80s in afternoons no complaints nice light traffic.

fletchh 06-21-10 04:53 AM

Just another wonderful warm ride in. I started off with my left knee creaking, but that was cleaned out a couple years ago, so no problem.

kevkwak 06-21-10 05:05 AM

My first commute in to work was this morning. Nice morning, the right temperature, no wind, a little sun. I have a 10.5 mile ride and only have to use roads for 1/2 mile from my house, the remaining mileage is the national cycle route-- no traffic, no traffic lights... couldn't be easier. Well, if I was fitter it would probably be easier. :)

tarwheel 06-21-10 05:59 AM

The hot spell continues but my body is starting to get used to it. I didn't sweat much at all this morning, despite temps in the 70s and 90% humidity. Also rode a metric century on Saturday and felt much better than I did riding a 40-miler the weekend before. I hope the whole summer doesn't continue like this, however. The temperature topped 90 F on 13 of the first 20 days in June, and it was in the upper 80s on 4 other days, with high humidity almost every day. No break in sight for this week either. Our average daily temperature is running 7 degrees above normal for the month so far.

vtjim 06-21-10 06:21 AM

A comfortable ride this morning. Sunny, low 60sF with a light tailwind. Another cyclist and I met at an intersection. He was on my right so I let him go first. I rode behind him for a mile or so but he was only going 13mph so I went around.

Then I reeled in a young woman on a road bike with pink bar tape who, like jyossarian said in an earlier post, had a nice form. She was doing 16-17MPH so clearly there was no reason to pass her.
:innocent:

Congrats. and it WILL get easier!

good ride in for me today, other than a bunch of Kamikaze Bunnies. Rode the last couple of miles in with a cop on his police bike. He even had a siren on it :)

rlrct 06-21-10 07:12 AM

Nice ride in today. Temp was around 70, fairly humid - nice quick ride. Basically didn't have to stop anywhere.

RB1-luvr 06-21-10 07:41 AM

ugh!! I miss cycle commuting! my company moved, and now I have to drive. The single speed commute I had was so fun. In second week at new facility.

and what is up with the way people drive on highways? holy crap, there are some idiots out there.

:-(

riot2003 06-21-10 07:57 AM

First commute ever this morn! a beautiful 6.5 mile ride on a fixed gear. I do notice that riding in the evening... much more enjoyable than dragging myself out of bed and immediately getting on the bike. Lesson for tomorrow: Bring another shirt. lol.

Congratulations to both of you! Riot, for me the hardest part of the first commutes was getting my clothing routine down. After a little while it will become second nature.

My commute: as reported earlier, my new house is only 3 miles from my office, not really long enough to ride (for me). This morning I went several miles out of my way to try an alternate route. It was OK, but I probably picked the wrong day to try it. My knees were really hurting today. It felt like my IT band. Since it hasn't bothered me lately I'm hoping it's just a passing thing.

Hey CCrew - I noticed the same thing this morning on the W&OD. I left home about an hour earlier than usual so I thought it was due to my earlier departure and I just wasn't used to it, but apparently not.

What's the difference in distance? I jumped from 7 miles to 17 late last year. I'm still adjusting to it, but it's feasible. The hardest part is when I have something to do after work; the extended ride plus shower means I can't ride a lot of the time. Also.... is there any bus/train you can look into so you can at least ride part of the way?

Anyway, today's commute was warm and humid- about 80F. Even after taking a shower I was sticky. Blech.

EKW in DC 06-21-10 10:47 AM

Yeah, the heat and humidity is here in a big way. Yick! On the bright side, my ride was quiet. And by quiet, I mean my bike wasn't going click-click w/ every pedal rotation. Bottom bracket cleaning over the weekend at the bike co-op yielded two mysterious metal filings. Everything else looked good, though, so we put it all back together and the ride is smooth and quiet again! With that and a couple other minor maintenance and upkeep issues taken care of, I say not bad for $10 of stand time! :) Thanks, co-op!

FuzzyE 06-21-10 12:59 PM

My first ride in to work today. It was easier than I thought. I have a hilly 50km RT commute that I have been working up to. In fact, I haven't done the entire ride yet. This morning I caught a ride across a bridge to take 1/3 of my commute away.

Our paths in Vancouver are very well marked and in relatively good condition. I was surprised by the volume of riders in certain areas.

SunnyFlorida 06-21-10 04:55 PM

My commute was boring except for a little squirrel that looked more like a tiny kangaroo than a squirrel. Its ears where pointy and upright and it didn't have a busy tail.

It also hopped as opposed to running. At first I thought it was injured but when I stopped my bike and walked toward it, then it scampered away on all fours. Weird.

Beyond that my commute was way boring.

doorunrun 06-21-10 07:13 PM

I had a nice ride today. Our morning was sunny and cool (for this time of year). There was a large thunder storm in the early afternoon and by quitting time was just a light drizzle. But the ride home was even nicer for me because I was in sync with everything. Things just worked out, the traffic and the breaks in traffic, the lights, the wind. I was in a groove and making good time. It's nice when that happens and I need to acknowledge it. Thanks!

Sixty Fiver 06-21-10 10:17 PM

It was already getting hot when we set out this am and freaking hot after school and we had to find some shade to fix a flat... I had a good assistant.

:)

Good weather, identical to yesterday. Took another route today, same distance overall but the start is uphill instead of downhill which kills me! Still, my average speed has gone up 0.5mph. My goal is to make it up the initial uphill without having to get off just before I reach the top... tomorrow maybe, just maybe.

fletchh 06-22-10 04:43 AM

It was a good ride in, and going home in the hot weather is wonderful. I can still feel the sting of this past winter, so bring on the heat.

esmith2039 06-22-10 05:10 AM

Last couple commutes were uneventful. A little hot last night tonight is supposed to be even worse. Got off once to cool off mostly the breeze kept me cool. Broke the 100 mile mark yesterday and the hills are getting easier. Lunch box seems to getting heavier though!

tarwheel 06-22-10 05:45 AM

Cute little girl, 65'er, and looks handy with the tools also.

Our hot spell continues in the SE with 14 out the past 21 days above 90 F, with no break in sight. Yesterday I foolishly thought I was getting acclimated because it felt much better, but it turns out that the humidity was just lower. The humidity is back up again today and my morning commute time increased by 1:30 compared to yesterday. It also didn't help that I only got 3 hours of sleep due to having to pick up my wife at the airport and her plane being late.

rumrunn6 06-22-10 06:00 AM

cool & quick!

13.34 miles
32.8 max
16.5 avrg
48 min saddle time

I'm not sure I could call it "volume" as such, but the MUP has a pretty decent combo of recreational and transportation cyclists in the afternoon. Out on the streets, bike commuters used to be rare enough that I tried to acknowledge/say hi to everyone I saw. Now I'll see several on every trip (even in the hot temps) and they just don't hold the novelty they once did.

vtjim 06-22-10 07:36 AM

Crisp this morning. Upper 50sF, low humidity, and sunny. Lots of cyclists... All going the other way. Even more runners. Some $(@* %(# broke a bottle on the MUP. I wasn't paying attention and almost went straight through it. Swerved at the last minute.

Yesterday may have been my fastest ride home to date, and it was into a headwind. I chased down a hard-tail MTB'er and he was going 18-20MPH most of the way. He passed a roadie who then tried to keep up, but couldn't, and was getting in my way. :p I sprinted around that rider at 25+ and stayed with the other guy. I'm glad I still have my front and rear suspension pressured-up. :D Got home and immediately over-heated. Shower time!

daijoubu2k8 06-22-10 08:41 AM

Today started off great, I woke early and changed quickly, ready to take a scenic ride along the Crosstown Greenway and then head up Burnaby Mountain to work. Hopped on the bike and was wondering how the heck I got a flat in less than 2 pedal strokes! After fighting to get the Conti Ultra Sports off the front wheel twice (I pinched a tube trying to put the tire back on :( ) I got on the bike and took the short route into work only getting here 5 minutes late.... I'll try the long route again tomorrow when I have spare tubes with me again.

EKW in DC 06-22-10 09:39 AM

Had an appointment before work, so I left by bike early to make the appointment. Since I was going to be late to my office anyway and taking a little sick leave time, I decided to take a more roundabout way to work. Ended up with 15 miles on the commute it. Normal commute is 7. Could have been about 10 miles w/ appointment stop, but I wanted more this AM.

All told, it was an hour of commuting for the morning instead of the customary 30, and I realized that 15 miles would probably be my ideal commute now. For the time being, I've got my seven miles instead (adding on miles when I can), but after seven miles I feel like I'm just getting ready to go!

It was a nice ride in, though, b/c it was a trail I usually only ride on weekends and rarely at that, so it was a nice change of scenery. Crossed the Key Bridge this AM, too, so I have now crossed all the Potomac bridges into DC on my bike except for Chain Bridge.

HardyWeinberg 06-22-10 09:45 AM

First commute in ~2 wks, and first ride fixed since like April. Great ride. 55F and gray but the calendar says summer, dammit, so I went w/ shorts and a t-shirt.

I can confirm that. Less than a mile into my commute this morning I was already having trouble seeing for the sweat in my eyes. Forecast calls for 100F on Thursday, but then it "cools off" to 94 for the rest of the week. Good thing I like heat.

Grim 06-22-10 03:56 PM

HOT!!!!!
Swapped out bikes for a little change of pace and rode my tall T700. Surprisingly my moving time was just as good as the other bike 58cm T700 with Gators, tighter riding position and minimal swag. I know that it weighs at least 5lb more with racks front and rear, fenders, MTX bag and AirZound and it also has a more upright riding position.

flyinblind 06-22-10 04:39 PM

Hot and humid here in Southwest Georgia. Got out of the house early enough to take a longer route and wound up with my highest average speed in awhile. Go figure.
