It was nice in the morning, low 70s, but the afternoon ride looked threatening. I managed to make it home dry. 10 miles each way.
On the morning ride in there was a cop car parked on the separated bike lane approach to the Manhattan Bridge, a heavily used bikeway from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I saw the cops just standing around chatting so I yelled at them for parking their car on the only bike lane around. They moved it. |
trip home was almost as fast as the trip in which is quite something consoidering the trip home has a bunch of uphills to climb
highlights: - up first climb some girls yelled from a car: "you can do it - keep going - woo hoo!" - almost got killed cuz I was so intent on waiting for oncoming traffic from one direction that I totally forgot to glance back in the other direction - almost got creamed ... - must be improving cuz my STATs were very good for a return trip 12.8 miles 31.0 max 15.0 avrg 51 min saddle time |
A wonderful ride in, lots of lights and warmth. It just doesn't get any better. Took my time and just enjoyed the ride.

Cool but very humid, so it balanced out, more or less. The path was damp from rain last night.
|
I am starting to dread my afternoon commutes due to the extreme heat and humidity. Yesterday the high was 98 with a heat index over 100, and it's supposed to be even worse today. I cut my pace back so I won't have a heat stroke but that means even more time on the hot pavement. Even the morning commute is hot -- 77 F at 6 am today -- and I'm drenched in sweat by the time I get to work. My morning commute time today was 4 minutes slower than on Monday when it was about 5 degrees cooler and much less humid.
|
I switched from my preferred track bike to a geared bike w/ a rear rack for commuting during this heat wave. Gets the stuff I'm carrying off my back, lets me coast and gear down for hills, resulting in a more tolerable ride. Yesterday afternoon's ride home didn't seem bad at all, although it was ~95+ I think the humidity was down some.
|
This morning felt worse than yesterday afternoon, even though yesterday afternoon was in the mid-90s.
80*+ w/ nasty humidity when I left home at 8:30 AM this morning. Ugh. I'm becoming more tolerant of the heat as summer takes hold, but this is just ridiculous. I want my 40* November AM commute back ASAP please! Forecast: Today 95 Tomorrow 98 (I'm guessing humidity will be about the same % as the temperature is in F). |
Today was a good ride in, no flats! :) Got out the door early and headed East to take in the Crosstown and Central Valley Greenways before heading up Burnaby Mountain. Added about 8km to my commute, but a nice change of pace with some nice scenery.... Except for the bee in my helmet. That was a moment of panic. Only the second time that's happened to me.

drove my car and my car died. it might be the timing belt. $85 for the tow and God only knows what for the repair. shuda took my bike ... hahaha
|
57F and sunny, felt like 75F
|
Got home last night and felt horrible. The heat killed me. Took the van into work today. Can't take feeling bad every evening.
|
Yesterday I took the subway so I could haul some unwieldy things home from work. Part way through the trip, the smoke and smell of something (rubber?!) burning invaded the train. I think the tracks caught fire again (they did earlier this week and a bunch of people ended up in the hospital). A bunch of us decided to get off the train and leave. I took the bus after that. Should have taken my bike!
Dreadfully rainy today with a bit of lightning/thunder. I loved the rain though, the MUP was really clear, and the rain quenches the heat. I had to take a detour due to an event near the end of my commute. And then while trying to stop while coasting down a hill toward a busy intersection, my brakes just didn't do anything. So rather than speed into said busy intersection, I decided to yell "NO NO NO NO NO" and crash onto the sidewalk. It wasn't so bad, and I had left early today, so I had a little time to wash up and change my clothes before work. A little road rash is probably safer than getting flattened by a car. Two scrapes, hardly even bleeding. Didn't even scrape up my palms. :thumb: Trying to decide if I should bike home too, I think I will. |
I was a bit faster than usual this morning. Averaged 16.5 MPH. I'm trying to figure out why I'm so sleeeepy today, though.
|
The commute this morning started off rough. I tried straping my backpack to my rack but it quickly fell off. Can't wait for my pannier order to come through. I then decided to try the CVG from New West to Burnaby for the first time. There are a few sections that are not well marked and I got lost around caribou. After a 10 min detour along a major road I found my way back. The MUP was pretty good short of the singage. I am worried that the new gravel pathways will develop some pretty big rutts though.

I compounded my stupidity today. I worked from home this morning, then rode over to the local park and played Ultimate at lunchtime, then rode to work after. I also left my water bottle at home and hadn't eaten enough for breakfast. I thought I was going to pass out. As an added bonus, the a/c in the locker room is weak. I showered, tried to dry off, and then got dressed for work. When I hit my office the whole front of my shirt was soaking wet. :( |
Well, here's the followup to my morning commute. Some big thunderstorms rolled in about 4 pm and I didn't have time to make a break for it, so I'm hanging around my office waiting for the weather to calm down. The up side is that the temperature dropped 20 degrees after hitting 98 earlier this afternoon.

Lucky b@st@ard. Bright sunshine here and 100F right now. It should cool down to 97 for my ride home. :notamused:

Doing another back2back ride days this week. The heat is rearing its ugly head in the afternoon. I may have to call it quits and keep the bike home. We'll see. My DIY pannier acted up yesterday. Need to fashion one of them shock cords.

I am an old fat guy. I ride quite a bit but I eat and drink beer. Life is good. But today the ride in was almost 80 degrees and very humid. I made sure I drank both my water bottles and one extra one from the px and one on the ride home. Actually 14 miles at 94 degrees wasnt too bad at all. I did not set any speed records but I actually felt like I could turn around and ride back. The only problem was I wear glasses so I cant wipe my forhead with my glove when I stop at stop lights, and I was sweating so much the sweat would get in my eyes and burn big time. I avoided hot days last year, but I am riding again tomorw even if it is 94. Gotta draw the line somewhere. feel great.

There is actually bicycle scull caps that have tails to keep the sun off your neck but I prefer the above styles. Nash bar has some as well ans most sporing goods stores carry them Here is what Nashbar has. http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/SubCate..._200275_200338 These are decent but more then the HG stuff at the sporting good store. http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...5_10000_200489 |
Still hot but the Humidity was down a little from yesterday. Made good moving time but caught a couple extra lights.
Had the small penis club blow the horn at me trying to scare me on the way home...I don't scare easy and thats not the first time one of the members of the small penis club has tried that on me. My Airzound is louder then the horn on their Chevy and I did scare them when they got caught at the light and a lit it off as I passed and screamed ..."I have a horn too!" Got the middle finger for that LOL. I really should stop doing that I know. LOL |
Good this morning, not too hot or humid as I try to get on my side of town by 7 am and sit down in a local grocery store and read my Bible while I cool down. I had my first rude driver today on my way home, honking at me when the other lane is clear to pass me. I just kept on my merry way, letting him know that he didn't own the road, and he can pass whenever he'd like. On the upside, I did find a route home thats safer and has less traffic, albeit an extra 1.5-2 miles down the road, but I enjoyed the hilly ride :)

Hot as Hades. It's been over 90 degrees for weeks now.
At work today people kept commenting on how dark I'm getting. It's all due to cycling to work the last 2-3 months. Today, even though I slapped some more sunblock before I left for home, I felt like my skin was almost sizzling. So before I came home I went to the store and picked up a higher level of sunblock. I went from a 30 to an 85. Mind you, the hot days of summer in Florida haven't hit yet. |

The days have been wonderful. I take my time and take in all the smells. I smell less honeysuckle, but some others things are blooming that in certain
place smell wonderful. Hopefully, no one is doing laundry at 5 am in the morning. The afternoons are hot, but I do enjoy the heat. There were too many mornings from winter past that were numbing cold, icy, snowy, and just plain miserable, but I do not feel that way about summer. |
After 3 weeks of riding in 90+ heat, I decided to drive today because the forecast is calling for 100+ temps and high humidity with a heat index of 105+. Everyone has their limit, and 100 F is it for me. I've ridden a few times in 100+ temps and did not like how it made me feel. Plus the temperatures on large roads are probably at least 5 degrees hotter, and I've got several spots on my afternoon commute with 6-lane roads, full sun and long uphill stretch. I'm starting vacation tomorrow anyway and have a ton of errands to run before I leave and will be riding 300+ miles on my trip.

Mid 60sF and overcast. I'm just ahead of rain, according to the radar. Light headwind. One clueless runner with headphones slowly drifting left. I dinged my bell twice. No reaction. My pass apparently reminded him to keep right.
