Weather was mild at 35f, but I pinch-flatted about two miles in.

HardyWeinberg 12-07-10 10:45 AM

44F and misty/damp

caloso 12-07-10 01:15 PM

Beautiful sunshine and 49F. Just a perfect day for riding. On the way in, I passed a girl on a purple single-speed who was wearing tall boots and a wool coat. She could have easily been from copenhagencyclechic.com.

Fizzaly 12-07-10 03:21 PM

Broke my chain again on my lunch break, gonna head to LBS afterwork and figure out why all of a sudden im breaking chains, pretty sure i know whats up, oh well i will find out in a bit.

First commute in the snow this season! Had the studded tires mounted on the Mongoose and tore around on snow covered streets and trails. Less than friendly NW wind on the way in with a about -12C wind chill factor. But it was a blast on the way home and even found one of my missing gloves!

dcb23 12-07-10 04:30 PM

I forgot to post this morning...almost stopped in my tracks by wind...freezing wind! I passed a jogger down by the Washington Monument and just then I hit a super strong headwind, I was going so slow I thought she would catch and pass me! Heading home now, still windy and cold in DC.

CptjohnC 12-07-10 04:37 PM

Left this morning w/ temps in the mid to high 20s. Lots of strong crosswinds and sometimes headwinds. Definitely a challenge to dress for the weather -- with the wind just added to the fun. I definitely need thicker insoles for my shoes, or need to consider going back to toe clips in below freezing temps, as my toes did not enjoy the ride.

Either way, though, the cold bike ride beat the heck out of my metro ride yesterday!

bijan 12-07-10 07:03 PM

-6C/21F on the way home and even more snow. I rode home late so the traffic wasn't bad. I could take a lane and so it was much faster than the ride in this morning. Two side streets didn't really get plowed and the well driven parts were rutted and annoying.

The studded tires were useful in two places. The pedestrian overpass was a thin layer of snow over ice. I stalled and put a foot down and I started to slowly slip down. I finally managed to push through and get going. Also one sidewalk was also the same, though not an incline.

It's funny but today was the first day I would have like foot retention as I often was going slowly in snow and would stop pedaling and then it was a pain getting the pedals in position again. On the other hand I don't know if I would have been confident enough to be clipped in and fall, plus my boot are huge and not clipless. Probably something like powergrips... I think I have some lying around in a box somewhere.

BigCircles 12-07-10 10:07 PM

cool morning with an awesome sunrise... warmer return trip. came very close to hitting a squirrel on a relatively high-speed downhill section. i was looking further ahead into the distance and then saw this squirrel doing a quick stop/start/left/right move right towards me. i just missed him!

buzzman 12-07-10 10:52 PM

cold (22〬 F) and windy. It's that time of year! I was toasty on the ride home tonight once I got started but a bit underdressed at the beginning of the ride.

fletchh 12-08-10 06:04 AM

Cold at 22 F ( -5 C). Less wind today, but a little breezy. Much better than the last couple of days, where going into a headwind was difficult.

carfreephilly 12-08-10 07:57 AM

COLD at around 20 degrees with wind chills in the teens. The high today is only 35. My front brake cable seized up about 2 miles into my ride, and I noticed my derailleur needs adjustment--it skipped a few times. Not the best ride, unfortunately. My feet are still freezing 2 hours later.

bijan 12-08-10 08:00 AM

-9C/15F and still more snow. Although it's been snowing since Sunday, Monday morning was the worst and the roads have been getting progressively better.

Although it was a little colder I wore my rain pants to keep my pant legs dry and I was pretty toasty.

tarwheel 12-08-10 08:26 AM

Amazing that it was colder in NC this morning than many places farther north. It was 17 F during my morning commute, the coldest since last January and my coldest December commute ever. My water bottle was frozen solid by the time I got to work. Despite that, I had a very comfortable ride. My cold weather gear is doing its job.

Fizzaly 12-08-10 08:39 AM

Not a bad morning 36f still wet, a few patches of ice over bridges, had a slight headwind but nothing to complain about.

Like I always say, a bad day bike commuting beats a good day on metro! :)

Best rides of the week so far last night and this morning. The wind last night was mostly at my back or at least enough at my back to help more than it hindered, and this morning the wind was relatively calm compared to the last couple days. Of course, I can still hear wind howling outside my office window, but it's not as loud as yesterday. :)

Had the trail mostly to myself today. Not too many other bike commuters out anymore, it seems. Oddly enough, though, there were five of us nose to tail in one block as I neared the MUP this morning. After that I think I saw two or three other commuters.

Chalupa102 12-08-10 09:11 AM

Good commute in, but again the wind was against me and not in my favor. 25F and sunny with winds from the WNW @ 17mph. The wind definitely slowed me down by quite a bit. Wore shoes covers for the first time this morning and they worked out great.

bored117 12-08-10 09:37 AM

Good commuting in. Bit chilly at 33f. Not much winds (4-6mph), only 2 quick stop light stop all the way through!!! (of 14 mile ride) Every commuting morning should be like this... (well maybe about 5-10f warmer would be wonderful)

Nice wet ride in this morning. Felt like I was fording a pond at one point. About 8C/48F in the rain this morning. I finally got my rear wheel pulled far enough back in the dropouts to keep the studs from rubbing when the frame flexes.

Stopped off to take a photo of some Christmas lights on the ride in too!

about 17 degrees and freezing cold. Need to get some liner gloves to compensate and the double socks today did the trick.

HardyWeinberg 12-08-10 10:17 AM

45F downpour LOVING the raingear

jdgesus 12-08-10 10:46 AM

sideways rain the shape of daggers, and thunderclaps.... but at least it was warm(ish)
a small part of my ankle was exposed (pants rode up a bit), and thusly right sock got soaked, didn't notice till i got in to work, as they are wool.
thank goodness there is a clothes dryer here :D

CptjohnC 12-08-10 11:11 AM

Cold and clear (high 20s?). Definitely quite a bit lighter in terms of other riders today, though I was certainly not alone on the CCT. However, when I got to work, I was only the second bike on the rack, and I definitely wasn't an early bird, so clearly more people left the bikes at home (rack usually has 15-20 bikes, and had at least 10 yesterday). I dressed down a little -- one less layer -- and it paid off. I was a bit cold starting, and it took a little longer to warm up, but once I was going, I was fine, and I sweat a lot less. My feet even stayed warm until just about the end, and never got as cold as yesterday. Had to ride around a fair amount of spot ice, but hopefully most of it will thaw during the day so I need not worry about it tonight.

Can't ride tomorrow, but that will just remind me what I'm missing.

Forgot to mention: My leaf strewn, very steep hill has been cleared of most leaves, making it a safe option again. Woot.

bbunk 12-08-10 11:28 AM

It was a great commute today. 46F and no wind. Best of all it was the first day commuting on my new Jamis Aurora. Only 9 miles so far in commuting milage but what a nice ride it has.

caloso 12-08-10 12:30 PM

Not really rain, more like a heavy mist, but wet streets with slimy cruddy leaves smashed into a slick brown goo. I rode very carefully.

Chalupa102 12-08-10 05:16 PM

Great commute home this evening at 25F and dusk/dark with winds from WNW @ 14mph. Should have worn my shoes covers because my toes froze. Luckly they didn't get cold until the end of the commute. First night using my amber bike brightz. I set them to slow flash and I think they look pretty cool. I couldn't really tell if they actually made a difference though.

jdgesus 12-08-10 07:10 PM

missed the rain, HAHAHA SCREW YOU NATURE (lighting strike)

larryfeltonj 12-08-10 07:48 PM

My commute "today" was really my return trip (I worked a 1 PM to 1 AM shift). I enjoyed it, but it was cold and windy (20s F, brutal gusts of wind).

My friends and co-workers thought I was crazy because of the temperatures. I actually layered and covered myself well enough that I never got very cold. The main problem was that every time I passed over a bridge I felt as though the wind would take me airborne.

BigCircles 12-08-10 08:05 PM

Temp was in the mid-40's on the way in...but it felt much cooler do to a blustery north wind that tried (unsuccessfully) to break my spirit. Nice sun today - and caught a great sunset on my way home.

mtessmer 12-08-10 09:35 PM

I had a great bike commute to work today. The temp read 1F when I left in the morning. Our temps have been colder than what we average in January. We've also have had snow on the ground since early November. None the less I've been enjoying my rides.
