Cold, but calm at 19 F (-7 C). I saw one other cyclist in the cold dark, he was coming out of an intersection going in the opposite direction, lit up well. I also saw my usual walker in the dark, but missed the usual dog walkers. I was a bit earlier this morning.

Fizzaly 12-09-10 07:57 AM

Not a bad morning 30f foggy, nice quick ride in.

bijan 12-09-10 08:22 AM

-10C/14F, coldest commute so far. The light snow that started on Sunday has just stopped.

Since I've gotten new mittens and sock liners I'm actually warmer than when it was just below freezing.

funrover 12-09-10 08:57 AM

Well had my first moron driver on my new commute. First he went by me honking, holding the horn as he went by. All of this only to be stopped at the light. I passed him up there, he yelled something at me. After the light turned green he caught back up yelling something at me again. the little I understood I can not type here. I will never understand.

Pretty chill morning with temperature of 19* F in our nation's capital. The wind continues to relent and it not nearly as bad eas earlier this week. Thoday, I broke out the full-fingered leather gloves for the first time this winter riding season. Realized today they fit over my regular half-finger cycling gloves. So, I wore both, and about halfway into my commute, once the blood was really pumping and the hands getting hot, I took off the outer full-finger gloves, left on the regular half-fingered cycling gloves, and it was delightful. My hands were never cold, nor did they get too sweaty.

Looks like a warming trend for a few days here. Two more days to the 3,000 miles commuted mark. :)

tarwheel 12-09-10 09:44 AM

I topped 7,000 total cycling miles for the year during my commute this morning, about half of that total while commuting. It felt like a real accomplishment considering the weather over the past few weeks. We are having temperatures in early December comparable to what we normally have in January, and some years it doesn't even get this cold in January.

jdswitters 12-09-10 09:47 AM

45F this morning on the way in, no gloves, no face mask, no wind pants. Just strapped on the helmet and rode. Seems several others were not going to pass up the great weather today, saw about twice the usual number of yellow jackets on the MUP, oddly enough they all looked overdressed to me. Maybe it's because I'm so slow I don't have to worry about the wind chill.

And last night, having a drink at the pub, I met the fabricator of Panda bikes. It was very cool to see bamboo bike in person. It was a fixie, otherwise I would have begged to ride it.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like a real *******/nutjob.

Most drivers are extra careful in winter. I figure they think we might go down at any second, and honking at us would cause us to explode...

That's amazing! I could never wear half-fingered gloves in sub-freezing temperature...

Pfhhhh Yeah right ! Half finger gloves ... How about Skii gloves with chemical warmers in them for a 21F ? :-(

HardyWeinberg 12-09-10 11:49 AM

48F and frog-choking rain

caloso 12-09-10 11:55 AM

Got my full fenders installed finally. Makes a huge difference, just on my feet.

I know. I'm a bit of a freak. I'm always the warmest person in the room. Always the one who wants to crank up the A/C or open a window or...

Honestly, once the blood gets flowing it's not bad. Ideally, I need some full-fingered gloves that breathe a little. I think that'd be ideal for these situations. As it is, impermeable leather full fingers (read VERY sweaty) vs. half-fingered cycling gloves (a little cold at first), I've been going for the half-fingers when the temps were closer to freezing (25+F). Today was the first day I knew that would be cold on my finger so much it hurt, thus the full fingers, at least for a while.

kimber_94806 12-09-10 02:55 PM

Nice 7-mile commute to work today in Socal. Temps were in the low 50's around 6AM and wore a skull cap, arm and leg warmers, full finger gloves with my usual base layer, jersey and shorts. I know it is kinda overkill compared to you guys but I easily get cold LOL. Can't wait for my longer rides this weekend. Be safe out there guys.

bijan 12-09-10 09:56 PM

Wasn't going to post as my commute was the same as the last few days, but I saw my first cyclist of the week on the ride home.

Then I went downtown to visit a friend and saw lots of cyclists.

I just got some cross country skis, so I might go skiing tomorrow morning before work instead of riding as I don't have lights (for the skis) and so won't be able to ski after work.

Ipedaltahoe 12-09-10 11:03 PM

Today was raining on the way to work. Which is a bummer as I want snow. It was 40 something so I just had on my coaches jacket which I wore home yesterday after nordic ski practice cause it was raining and I only wore a sweatshirt to work yesterday. Rain pants, lobster claw gloves, ear flapped fleece baseball hat. On the way home rain jacket over long sleeve shirt, jeans.
Much prefer snow to rain makes the commute more interesting and my team really needs the snow.

When I was out Sunday I encountered a guy on roller skis. I think we are a ways off from getting enough snow for the cross country folks. He was probably training for a holiday trip up north.

The commute for the last two nights has been about the same, mostly clear sky with temps around freezing.

fletchh 12-10-10 06:24 AM

Just another cold day at 20 F ( -6 C). The winds seem to be gone, at least until the begining of next week. The weekend looks decent, maybe in the 40s F (middle single digits C). As the week wears on, my legs are lazy on friday, but they seem to work.

bijan 12-10-10 07:58 AM

-13C/9F coldest we've had so far. It was actually one of the warmer days of the week due to the lack of wind. The streets are very clear, the sidewalks so-so (except the one sidewalk over an overpass that would be useful, but the traffic is lighter now so it's no longer necessary) and the steep pedestrian overpass is in great shape (or at least not a struggle).

Chalupa102 12-10-10 08:09 AM

Great commute, but cold at 10F and mostly cloudy with no wind. This is the coldest temp I've commuted in so far. My fingers froze going down the hill from my house, but warmed up later on. There was a car accident on one of the roads that I go thru. Had to detour around it, but it wasn't very far out of my way. It was a good thing I happened to look at a map of the area the other day, or I might not have known which roads to take to get around.

Fizzaly 12-10-10 08:17 AM

38f pouring rain, windy, uneventful ride in.

EKW in DC 12-10-10 08:18 AM

Best ride of the week by far was this morning's. Little to no wind, and what there was was surpisingly at my back more than my front. Temp around 25F (-4C). Legs felt great, and I made my best time so far this week as well.

Had my bike looking like a touring rig this morning with an extra set of panniers on to bring a rolled up suit to work for a Saturday meeting tomorrow and to take home lots of leftovers from today's holiday party at work. They always over-order and the bringing of tupperware in encouraged - load up on free ham, turkey, stuffing, etc. It's a yearly ritual. :)

Have a good weekend everyone!

HardyWeinberg 12-10-10 10:58 AM

40F, damp, clammy, cold.

When I got to work, the socks I wore yesterday morning (and left spread out all day and night) had still not dried. It was rainy yesterday.

gecho 12-10-10 01:17 PM

Monday was my only ride this week as classes are over for the semester. I hope to ride out to the university on the weekend to do some studying. I got an old wool army sweater from a surplus store I want to try out.

genel 12-10-10 02:29 PM

First ride this week, I've been waiting for my new Nokian W106 tires. Plenty of ice and slush this morning to try them on.

Quite a workout. Felt more like thirty miles then thirteen.

Chalupa102 12-10-10 04:03 PM

Great commute at 26F and overcast with winds from the WSW @ 6mph. Slow today for no apparent reason except that it was cold. This will be the last commute on slicks because the studded tires are going on tonight. They are expecting snow/rain/sleet mix Sunday to Monday. Actually saw some other bicyclists on the road this afternoon. Two were riding together and crossed at an intersection into a park, and one on Berkshire Ave. Unfortunately the one on Berkshire was a salmon heading the same direction as me on the other side of the road who later turned into a salmon sidewalk rider.

bijan 12-10-10 05:54 PM

-6C/21F and about an inch of new snow. Wore what I've been wearing for the past few days and I think I've become acclimatised to the cold, because my back was sweaty by the time I got home.

jdgesus 12-10-10 08:09 PM

the sky parted and there were sun breaks, blew off the rest of the afternoon and got in as many miles as i could on the way home.
in short, the commute home rocked.

Mardmakarm 12-10-10 11:14 PM

Fixed gear bike quite popular in Bangkok now, many kids use it as commuting bike.Only think i fear that most of them didn't use protection equipments at all, because they think it wasn't cool to use them with fixed gear bike.

fletchh 12-13-10 05:57 AM

The temp was not bad, somewhere around freezing, 32 F ( 0 C). There was some flurrying going on, but nothing is sticking. The winds are what made the ride more work this morning, and it looks like the winds will be here for a few days. This makes 2 weeks in a row for windy rides.
