thanx for sharing guys, im getting used to reading my fellow commuter storys!! keep it up guys! :D

So today i woke up a bit late, but had all the stuff packed, the GF made me a sandwich to go  and i went my way to the ports. in the port i saw the boat come in and the supervisor called me to give me a speech of BICYCLE NOT BEING PERMITED, with not reason, just pointing to the sing...i stayed calm and told him "i go to work on my bike, letting me use this service makes my commute a safer one, and also im the only person here to take the boat" he said "if anyone says anything you have to leav"

i spoke to the workers inside the boat, and they dont eve know why bikes are prohibited  ... this is the last time i beg to them...IM THE ONLY PASSENGER! this is a govermental service not a private one....i wonder who should i contact to change this...of coarse its gonna be so hard, that commuting every day on my bike could be easier and cheaper by not using their boat service...

im pretty sad about it...when you prohibit a good thing, your promoting all the bad in the world.

Definitely getting cooler. Yeah it was cool this morning (perfect, really, in the high 50s and calm), but yesterday was a bigger indicator. They said it was in the 80s, but it just didn't feel at all hot like it usually does in the afternoon. Autumn is here.

jpdesjar 09-29-09 07:13 AM

Fun
I wore a coat, but took it off about halfway into my ride.
I was fast this morning.

truman 09-29-09 07:34 AM

Fail. I loaded up, dressed for the chill, hit the road, and almost halfway in, about 4 miles, my light's battery died. This time of year it's still full dark on the morning leg, so I turned around. Coming back along an exceedingly dark residential stretch, I almost collided with a jogger who was running against the traffic.

Got home, plugged in the battery and drove on in.

genel 09-29-09 07:48 AM

48f, 15-20 tailwind. Flat about 3 miles in. Same place as a few months ago, looks like the same peice of shrapnel. Also got caught by the train.

Hung up the road bike for the year, and back to the commuter, about 20 lbs heavier. But better lights, and fenders.

Left second spare tube and extra CO2s back home. Added to promised headwind, I'm not looking forward to a relaxing ride.

Few things quite as useless as the spare tube left behind!

Uneventful ride in this morning. Temp about 41F. The sunrises sure are nice. There is a construction project starting on my main road to work (diaganol highway between Longmont and Boulder). So far no impact to the commute.

Loving the weather, well, minus the wind. Just absolutely lovely temp. this AM - 58 degrees. Couldn't ask for better. Was a little cool at the beginning in my shorts and performance fabric shirt, and a little warm at the end of the ride, but for the middle 80% of it, couldn't have been more comfortable. Wind this morning was not an issue, but last night's gusty 15-25 mph winds were.

Maybe it's because I grew up in western Pennsylvania, but nothing about a temperature in the 80s says autumn to me. That reaks of summer. I don't care how it feels. :D Give me 40s in the AM 50s or 60s in the day and some orange, red, yellow foliage, then you're talking... :)

Been a while, so to be back on the commuter felt good. My main light setup died (have to send it back to Niterider for service), so last night I finally mounted a backup set. Need to tweeak the aliognment, the lights are aimed a bit too much to the right, but they worked. Ride in was nice - mid 50's, so shorts, summer jersey and arm warmers and I was a happy dude.

tarwheel 09-29-09 09:05 AM

Great commute this morning, and coolest weather (50 F) here since last spring. I still didn't need a vest but wore arm and leg warmers. The past two mornings I almost talked myself out of riding, but I'm glad that I rode. It's easy to start wimping out once the weather starts cooling off and the days get shorter. Yesterday I almost drove because the forecasters were calling for high winds and potential storms, but wind wasn't bad and the storms didn't arrive until evening.

HardyWeinberg 09-29-09 09:28 AM

Cold and clammy, 42F, wet ground. Sunny though. Expect indefinite rain to start any minute now.

caloso 09-29-09 09:42 AM

Much cooler today. Dark clouds overhead -- surprised I didn't get rained on. But I have fresh legs today. That's always nice, no matter the weather.

HardyWeinberg 09-29-09 09:45 AM

ps-> I think I finally conquered my canti brakes last night; new cable, shortened the housing. The setup is kind of hideous (brake arms not symmetrical) but it works pretty well. Still can't lift the rear wheel w/ short stop. Final test is going downhill w/ a trailer, that might not be until Thursday.

BianchiDave 09-29-09 12:49 PM

No commute into work today but my son and I went for a ride with the attached bike.

canyoneagle 09-29-09 01:26 PM

Yesterday's commute was pretty typical, things have warmed up a bit in advance of the coming cold front.

It was VERY warm this morning - 72F, with the beginnings of the southern wind getting sucked into the approaching storm.
At 1:20 local time, the wind is now a sustained 28-30 mph from the south (my commute home is SE), and the wind will die down tonight as the front rolls through.
It is supposed to be cool and rainy in the morning - 40's F, and the temps will drop throughout the day (to the high 30's F). Fun!

tkp 09-29-09 02:17 PM

Today the commute was quite terrifying. Drunken young fools on clapped out motorbikes with no lights whipping past on your inside while you are turning, buses flying straight at you on the wrong side of the road, drunken old fools on clapped out motorbikes with no lights flying right out of blind side streets without so much as a glance over the shoulder.
Only a 20K round trip, but in Hanoi on wet tarmac 20K can feel like a long long way.

rando 09-29-09 02:24 PM

All I can say is I'm glad I'm not in Hanoi! my ride was pleasant and uneventful....

eltejano 09-29-09 03:02 PM

mine was decent

Mine was good- slightly less traffic than normal because they're doing a test on Market St here in SF closing it to traffic going downtown

kgriffioen 09-29-09 03:57 PM

Been a while since I posted here. Any way the ride in today was OK, but it was cool (43f). I needed the long pants and gloves. More good news was that the wind was at my back this morning and now as I head home the wind has died down a lot. Should be a pleasant return trip.

mustang1 09-29-09 04:18 PM

Came back from Disney Land so haven't ridden the bike for 11 days and stuffing myself with chocolate croissant and various other junk foods. First ay back on the bike yesterday and I had no power, low fitness, still highly enjoyed the ride, but legs were not free-flowing like normal. That was yesterday. Today I went a little harder but am also a little more tired. Dm right it feels good though!

Weather is getting cooler now, around 52F in the mornings. Well I think I done the C to F conversion correctly.

Ed Holland 09-29-09 05:07 PM

Nice ride here today. Cool this morning with plenty of cloud overhead.

Grim 09-29-09 06:35 PM

Little chilly on the ride it at 54f. Wind was light so no issue with that. Hands got a little cold so full gloves tomorrow when they are saying 48f. Knees were a little cold and stiff as a result but I am not ready for long pants but I may have too. :(
May go pick up some knee warmers this week. We are still hitting mid 70's in the afternoon.

Ride home was stellar! Gusty but it was from behind to I took the long way for a couple extra miles. :thumb:

Tomorrow I think I'll ride the 84 Fuji. Planned to ride it for the past two days but didn't work out for a couple of reason involving lack of racks on it. Tomorrow I have nothing that would make a bike with racks a better choice so it will be a nice easy ride in.

vtjim 09-29-09 07:33 PM

Bit of a repeat of yesterday's ride home, but less moist. I managed to outrun the rain except for some light stuff. There was a low gray ceiling over Lake Champlain and I slowed up to have a look in an open area. Pretty. Winter's coming...

echotraveler 09-29-09 07:57 PM

a bit late, today i rode back, and all of a sudden i feel a biker behind me (i had just entered the central park bicycle/walking trail)... all of the sudden he go's on my side and talk to me about the Moulton, i was pretty happy, and then he says "ok, good bye":twitchy::notamused: (lol) i went "ghetto macho mode" lol:roflmao2: (meaning "i cant let him go like that in his Carbon fiber machine!")...so i got up my pace! lol it was fun! followed the guy thru the entire cycle path, until he turned, i had to continue home, because i commute:thumb:

i was proud, and a bit tired, but i got home pretty darn fast today!:thumb: great day for riding

That's why I still run lights that take AAA batteries. If they start to go, I just replace 'em.

Reformed lurker! (First post.)

I noticed the heat was finally breaking (only 89F!) when heading in for a night class. I got to campus, found out I had the wrong day, and was all smiles because it turned into a great excuse to explore alternate routes on the way home. I also got waved at by a decked out roadie heading the opposite direction, across four lanes of traffic.

I don't know why, but that alone kept me grinning for about a mile. I've only been commuting for a few months now, and it felt like I finally must look like I know what I'm doing. So if that was any of you in the Palm Springs area on Country Club, thanks! Good day overall, despite a run in with an unnecessarily huge SUV.

Near as I can tell, the driver decided last minute that they were turning, accelerated suddenly to get past me, braked hard, and jerked a hard right directly in front of my path, all without a signal. Thank Jeebus I was already braking after I saw them gun it. I could smell the stupid percolating out their tailpipe. I actually thought to myself WWJBD ("What Would JoeyBike Do," with a nod to the fact that 1. some might consider him a bad influence on a relatively new rider 2. he would have split the lane to begin with and not been in this situation.)

Anyway.

The deceleration made it easier to cut left and stay off the pavement, but I still ended up putting a shoulder along their left rear quarter panel, which made an awesome sweaty/squeaky noise, and my bar end gave them a new pin stripe. I started wobbling from the further deceleration from the friction of my shoulder and bar-end, took my right foot out of the cage and pushed off their running board, and kept on moving. They also seemed content to go on their merry way, so no chance to talk it over.

This is my first car encounter, and I'd like to think that normally I'd feel horrible for the paint damage. Given the circumstances, not so much.

Yeah, drunken people everyday! It seems to be a national sport or something over here. I've never seen so many horrendously pissed people decide that it is still completely safe to hop on a motorbike.

fletchh 09-30-09 04:30 AM

It was a good ride in at 48 F ( 8 C). I brought out the long sleeves today, but that was it. My legs
are still OK, and probably will be into November. Giving up shorts is very hard to do. It always takes
7 months to get back to them.

craigdurkee 09-30-09 05:47 AM

Finally a great day in Perth for riding. The weather here in Western Australia has been pretty rough and today I hope was the turning point were the weather finally gets back to what Perth is used to - HOT DAYS

Stretched the morning commute out to around 32km and then the standard 13km on the way home.

I also bought a food processor today so the Surly handled that well to, that bike can carry anything

BianchiDave 09-30-09 07:01 AM

Good commute today. The temp was nice low 50’s.
I rode the Pista in today:love:.

I’m really liking the fixed thing.
