You just have to love the challenges and opportunities that a bicycle can provide. Thanks for the pics. Nice to hookup with a fellow rider, especially unexpectedly.

Okay, so I figured I would take a nice leisurely evening ride home that included a few miles on the Trinity River Trail. We've had a wet fall, but no rain for the last week or two. Where I get on the trail I have to go over one of the low water crossings. Would it be clear? Well, it was dry... kind of. A little muddy. But there was a lot of debris on the crossing. You know, little twigs and stuff.... like this:

A nice ride in this AM. I felt a little sluggish, but I think I'm still recovering from 36 hours in a car and a bachelor party and wedding (where I was best man) that all happened between Thursday night and Monday morning. And I worked yesterday. Lots of driving, lots of drinking, lots of errands, lots of dancing, and not too much sleep...

The commute I wanted to talk about was last night's though. It was my first dark commute with adequate lighting!!! My Terralux flashlight came in while I was away and yesterday's evening commute was my first chance to use it. It's not quite as bright as I had dreamed about, but honestly, it's what I realistically expected, and it allows me to see the trail in front of me well enough to ride along at almost the same speed I'd run in the daytime, and it's WAY brighter than the camping headlamp I was relying on to complement my little "be seen" 1 LED Planet Bike light.

All in all, I give it :thumb::thumb:, especially for the $28 I spent on it (including shipping). No bike-specific lights can even come close pricewise in the 200+ lumen category. Other flashlights, yes, but not bike-specific. And as for riding at night, it also gets :thumb::thumb: It's a lot of fun!

First ride on my newly repaired folding bike - bike/train commute from work to the dentist.

The bike shifted smoothly, even going uphill, and performed well overall. Now if I can just figure out why the frame keeps flexing at the hinge joint I'll be set.

jviking 11-10-09 04:32 PM

Arrgh no ride :( woke up late to find a flat so I ended up on the bus

jagsfanrick 11-10-09 04:33 PM

This morning all was fine...this afternoons ride was a wet one but no lightning so all was ok. My shoes are wet so dryer time in morning if not dry by then.

bugly64 11-10-09 07:13 PM

Top speed this morning was 27 mph; top speed this evening on the way home was 9.7 mph.

caloso 11-10-09 07:17 PM

Cool with a high overcast. Legs in much better shape today.

HardyWeinberg 11-10-09 07:48 PM

downpour going home; stopped by the time I got to the grade school to pick up my 8 yr old. He is really digging his new headlight (LED flashlight + lockblock)

I've had more days like that than I care to remember. Well done, bugly. Well done.

For me it was a very easy, relaxed ride home. I took the route that is probably the mellowest one in terms of traffic. Not the shortest ride, but pretty relaxing.

Nice weather for biking this week. Lower 40s in the mornings, maybe 10 degrees warmer in the evenings. Still seeing lots of other bike commuters. Had a nice ride for a while with a fellow on my way home the other night. Made me realize how rare it is, for me at least, to strike up a decent conversation with another biker en route.

echotraveler 11-11-09 07:35 AM

Veterans day!

Most people are free today...the streets have very little traffic...great!
Woke up and the sky was blue, and the ocean had big waves! great way to begin a commute! went to the park were a take a MUP that cuts thru a mangroove forest, but since today government is free the path was closed!

so i had to go back 2 miles to take different route, gotto work 10 minutes late! still a very good ride!

vtjim 11-11-09 07:39 AM

Slow, on account of last night.

:o

The cold air felt good though. Low 30sF.

genel 11-11-09 08:14 AM

I looked out the window at the sunshine this morning, and just grabbed a fleece jacket. Brrrr, temps around freezing. Fleece is not very good as a windbreaker, so I was pretty well chilled.

Traffic was heavier then I expected, looks like the chilluns didn't get the day off.

Great ride this morning, very little traffic because of the Holiday, but the wind made it challenging.
I just started reading 'Bicycle Diaries' by David Byrne, great book so far. It's slow in the office today so I am hoping to get some reading done and I also want to clean my space.

caloso 11-11-09 11:54 AM

We're working today, although most are not, so traffic was very light this morning. A guy in a Honda flipped me off this morning for having the nerve to ride my bike on the street. I caught him at the next light and asked "So, what's the deal?"

He started screaming "Hey, *******! You're not special! You're not special!"

Wow. Seriously ranting. It took a lot of restraint but I clipped in and said "Good morning" and got the **** out of there as soon as I could. I need to stop engaging the natives.

lshaped 11-11-09 12:03 PM

28 degrees, can't seem to keep my toes warm despite getting shoe covers and wool socks.
otherwise sunny and pretty good.

jagsfanrick 11-11-09 03:19 PM

A little less traffic this morning. Light rain coming home. Low to mid 70's all day.

CCrew 11-11-09 04:18 PM

I didn't need a bike for the commute today. I needed FLIPPERS!

neilfein 11-11-09 05:25 PM

There was far more traffic than usual. That's particularly weird on Veterans Day.

dude!:twitchy: you did good!:thumb:

when coming back i decided to not ride on the bus lane, so i got to my rightful law-abiding right most part of the right lane....some jerk accelerated way too fast 1 foot away from me...i screamed and ringed my bell...he put the hazards on... :twitchy::notamused: i was so pissed!

Kudos to you. Admirable restraint.

Steady rain, and 38 F ( 3 C) this morning. Fallen leaves, dark roads, puddles, and storm drains all
added to the experience this morning. Everything is wet, but not soaking wet, so not so bad. Wearing
shoe covers helped keep the shoes dry for the afternoon ride out.

vtjim 11-12-09 06:56 AM

Mid 20sF and pleasant. The sun was coming up. Lots of frost on the ground. I made first bike-tracks over a wooden MUP bridge. Saw one regular cyclist going the other way, all bundled up like it was cold or something. ;)

echotraveler 11-12-09 07:14 AM

today i came to work at 14 to 15 mph average! first week of commute it took me 45 minutes to do 7 miles...now im taking 30 minutes~!! im proud!

great day, blue sky, with temps around 80F

KLW2 11-12-09 07:45 AM

Into the wind!!!!!

truman 11-12-09 08:17 AM

Vurrah nahce!

Will the crossings over the Trinity ever be dry again?

Nearly hit a big, bushy fox going home the other night. Missed by 3 feet, max.

jpdesjar 11-12-09 08:30 AM

I love bike commuting!
My legs were a little tired this morning, I may take it easy on the way home, maybe.
