I thought my morning commute was good, but that was before I rode home! Saw as many commuters this evening as I did throughout the summer. Something about a 60F day in December in NY made the ride home really cordial. The moon was incredible!

weather was fine. stopped raining as soon as i stepped out of the house :). minor mishap though. got wiped off my bike by a large tree branch that i guess had been partially broken off by a truck. it was quite dark and i didn't see it dangling over the side of the road until my helmet light hit it at the last minute. had just enuf time to think "?!", then bang. went down pretty hard but no damage done.
ordered my first pair of studded tires. hope they arrive before the snow! |
First bike commute since coming back from vacation. Uneventful, although I had to work late and therefore traffic was relatively light.

I recently bought THIS jersey. It has the United States Universal Vehicle Code, §11-1205 printed on the sleeve for getting cops and other folks up to speed regarding our place on the roadway.
http://www.elevengear.us/images/tmx/...x-J-Sleeve.jpg Don't hate on yourself. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle talking reason to a cop. Nice I like the jersey! That is what court is for, to defend yourself, but never to a cop...it can get ugly trust me! Just ask the guy who got tasered while still riding his bicycle on the road in a straight line by a cop who was apparently on his way to a 4 hour old burglary call, because his cruiser broke down and was driving a cruiser where the speedometer was not functional. The cyclist was with his kid too. Sick. |
bikegeek57 - thanks for the warning. I've got some more reflective tape for my ski pants (soon to be winter bike pants) so I'll be ready

I've started measuring my commute based on the wildlife I see along the bike path. Yesterday was fantastic. Two jackrabbits on the golf course I ride past (always some cottontails along the way, but the big rabbits are rare), a road-runner in some shrub brush, and a Harris Hawk in a tree. Nice.

I done skipped the train!
Total Mono-Modal commute today. I left the house at 6:25 rather than 6:40. Arrived at work at 7:20 rather than 7:35. Ony five minutes extra to ride a real non-folding road bike rather than my dahon? Awesome! I'm even less tired after 16 miles o/w on my panasonic than I usually am after 3.5 + 1.5 miles o/w with the train/26" folder. Totally invigorated, even. Not to mention the beach route and the just-past-full morning moon (had it in the sights of my old toy tasco last night), clear orange sunrise... ahh... I'm a convert! Wonder if I can keep this up. I think that since the train station is east of me, while work is to the west, I'll make the call based on the weather and the wind speed/direction. Nice to have options. |
23, snow, and wind. Welcome, Winter.
|
Pretty nice. Left the house with 5C and a bit of headwind. But SUNNY!!! Got cutoff by an SUV in Brooklyn right next to my house. 50 minutes later 1 block from work in Midtown Manhattan I pass the same SUV, smile and wave, as i pass him while he stands in traffic.

Cold, cold, and more cold. My computer was telling me this when I got here.
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=127568 good thing I bought some full finger gloves last night :) http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=127569 Other then that there was a Fedex truck that got a little close for comfort but all in all a good ride. |
wretched morning. Couldn't get anybody in the house moving. 29F. My hands hurt by the time I was passing the house after dropping 8 yr old. So I stopped in for some glove liners.
Then a flat. I took my coffee cup out of the bottle cage before laying the bike down, but it tipped over anyway on the frozen turf and emptied out. Argh. Tried to do as much work on the flat as I could in the glove liners, kinda maintain circulation in my fingers, but it was awkward. Usually I can patch a flat w/o pulling the wheel but this morning nothing was working and I wound up replacing the tube, which I definitely hate to do on a sunny day. Anyway, no injuries or destroyed parts or anything but it was a slow sluggish cold morning and I got into work late. |
37F and misty. Actually a perfect morning for a long, leisurely ride. Unfortunately I was running a bit late, so I came directly into work. Had a pleasant and safe ride, despite the stop sign runners (gold MB), the blackberry checkers (black BMW), and the cellphone talkers (black VW, silver pickup, blue minivan).

Chilly, misty, lovely!

It's been in the low 30's in the morning around here. I'm a little frustrated that I've felt slow this week. I'm not tired or sick, but the OD says I'm slowing down. I guess the lower temps has affected my speed!
|
Low 30s. Some snow expected but not expected to accumulate. Cold and my legs felt unusually weak, but still better than driving.
|
27 degrees this morning at 6:30am. Lows here in Bend on Monday and Tuesday morning are to be near 4 degrees. This may be curtains for awhile.
|
After seeing those posts about low temps for the ride in, I'm sorry to report I'm one of a bunch of wuses here in North Florida. It was cold and wet; hard to believe it was in the '50's. How can we call this cold? I had on a bunch of layers and wound up cutting the ride home short accepting a ride part way. I'm still working on my list of excuses. But, I'll be ready when it dips below 40, as BF is my witness! (although, I still haven't worked out the right pair of gloves problem yet)

BRRRRR!!! 20 degrees this am and 30 degrees for the ride home. The good thing is I got off early. It was wierd riding home in the day light again. I tried some ski goggles to try and be able to wear a face mask without all the fogging of my glasses. This worked but the goggle crush my nose and the mask suffocates me on the hills. Anyone got any advice on a way to keep my face warm without fogging up my glasses? I would love to hear it. Yes I have tried "Cat Crap" on my lenses and they still fog up.

12/06/09 falling on ice SUCKS (going slow), still rode to work.
Lesson learned: make wide turns not normal turns. Must research studded and/or zip ties. |

I have been successful with safety glasses so far! that might change! |
Tomorrow is the first bigger snow storm forecasted for the season. (1-2 inch accum). This is a first for me. Should I go, or sit this one out???
|
Did some recon tonight... the side streets are starting to get hard packed from the cars passing by (the ones that still aren't stuck or forzen) and the main roads have finally been cleared right down to the asphalt so getting around tomorrow should be much easier... and it is supposed to be sunny and a balmy -18 F.
|
Lots of hard pack ice and snow... 24 degrees when I left the house. What wasn't hardpack was frozen runoff. Definitely a challenging ride in. Average speed surely sucked, 9.3mph. I just am glad I had the foresight to grab the MTB this am going out, I don't think the cross bike would have cut it.

Rolled in at 20 F ( -6 C) this morning. This is the first day for cold weather gear, heavy hood, ski pants, very good gloves and so on. We had our first snow on Saturday, but the roads are clear with packed ice in the gutters, and no place to go in case of errant drivers. Replaced my chain this weekend, and that was
a very pleasant feeling for my legs this morning. Now is that long 4 months march back to civilized temps, and making do until then. Sixty Fiver, -18F ( -27 C) is very cold, and I would have to learn how to dress for that. |
December 7, 2009 - a day that will live in NE Ohio bike commuting infamy. I rode the 'snow' bike with the studded tires for the first time this winter season. I don't recall ever making it into December without using studs for as long as I have been using studs. I really didn't need the studs for the ride in, but the forecast shows a possible need for them on the ride home.
23F this morning - it's finally starting to get a little cold - but still a long way to real cold. |
My tires touched snow for the first time since spring. Just a dusting, and only in a few patches. Headwind and temperature around 30F.
No studs for me. Yet. (I have the tires, just not mounted.) |
really glad I've been maintaining the bike including cleaning and lubing and that I covered it before the long weekend away. was a little nervous riding in colder temps with snow on the ground but so far so good. thanks to snow plows there is some shoulder to ride on and the cagers are courteous. there are the occasional exceptions that buzz me and I can only hope they do it intentionally and know how close they are. it's the ones that aren't paying attention that worry me. I wore a ski mask and enlarged the eye and mouth holes. it felt good to have my nose and sinus area (top cheek near nose) covered. the snow pants worked fine and weren't too hot. my water bottle froze 3/4 the way on my 13 mile commute and as I tried to open and close the valve and free the ice I could hear the slush in the bottle. I never did get another drink! amazing what temps in the high 20s can do after 40 minutes, even on a moving bike.
I'm thinking of adding an additional strobe just for those that buz me - pointing right at them as they approach instead of just the one on the back of my rack |
