How many mpg do you get?

I found this interesting little calculator that will provide how many watts you put out for your weight and average speed and the equivalent in mpg of gasoline. Sure this may or may not be very accurate, but it's fun.

so at 200 lb and 15 mph for my commute
power raw/real (watts):
209.35 | 872.29
Calories per minute, hour, and mile:
12.51 | 750.5 | 50.0
Approximate Miles per Gal:
619 MPG

give it a go just for kicks

I fail

My last tank was ~ 31 mpg. My EPA estimated mileage is 20. Yay hypermiling!

I do. And, unless you grow all your own food organically and without modern machinery, you do too. For example, one source cites 78 calories of fossil fuel are expended to produce 1 calorie of protein from beef. No doubt a similar calculation is used in this formula.

...if I drink a gallon of water a day, and ride 20 miles a day, does that mean I run on 20 mpg of water? What with a gallon of water being like, 2.00, that's, what, only a dollar per gallon cheaper than driving a car?

EDIT: Brainfart. We're SUPPOSED to drink about a gallon of water a day anyway. -_-

It's not. The numbers its getting are assuming 1 for 1. If you use that 78 calorie number (which is likely on the right order of magnitude but twice as high as it should be given the source) you're a gas guzzler. Polan guesstimates about 10 calories of oil for 1 calorie of food. This leaves you with mileage around 80mpg. Still pretty pathetic. I'm sure you can do much better if you're a tiny bit careful about what you eat.

Where do you live? $2 gallons of water? That's crazy overpriced.

"Calculation"? There's no "calculation" in the source you cite, simply an assertion:

"Calories of fossil fuel expended to produce 1 calorie of protein from beef: 78 "

...with no source attributed. FWIW, my vegetables come from my garden, which I till by hand and fertilize with composted horse manure from a friend's horses, and my beef is local grass-fed. My life ain't fossil-fuel free, but I have a strong dislike of simplistic sound-bite "facts" like this.

That sounds high - how was it measured? The typical bagel has about 350 kcal. which would only be enough to get me 10 - 15 miles at my typical touring pace.

Guess I'm not that fuel efficient... too much weight. Might as well give up riding and buy a Hummer :-)

Being very large, and reasonably fast hurts my mileage. I used 16 mph in this estimate - on a good day most of my ride is closer to 20, and my average counting stops is 15.5 mph.

20 mph for me is over 400W!

Hmmm, something is wrong with that formula. If I go 13 mph, I get 752 mpg. However, if I go only 0.0000001 mph, I get 993 or 31.2 calories/mile. At that speed, it would take over 1000 years go a mile, and yet I would only burn 31.2 calories during that whole time.

What is the ratio of Stanley nickels to Schute bucks?

The same as the ratio of leprechauns to unicorns.

Silly internet calculators.
