Adjustable stem help
Hi,
I am looking into getting an adjustable stem for my '90 Trek Singletrack 950. How exactly are they measured, so I can determine what will fit and won't?
Will the stem I choose limit my choice of bars?
Thanks
Ben

There are a few relevant measurements: (1) the diameter where the stem attaches to the steerer, (2) the diameter where the stem attaches to your handlebars, and (3) the length of the stem. There's also an angle, but of course since you're looking at adjustable, that isn't relevant.
There are also two kinds of steerers you might be attaching to, threaded or threadless. Be sure you get the right kind of stem.
The steerer diameter will probably be either 1" or 1 1/8". Your handlebar diameter is most likely 25.4".
Length of the stem, which will effectively vary as you change the angle, is used to dial in a comfortable reach.

Get a Zoom stem. Aesthetics aside, it will allow you to dial in the right position for riding comfort. If your stem is too low, your back and neck will be sore at the end of a ride. An adjustable stem should let you install your choice of bars. Depending on the bar, adjustments have to be made to get the fit right and varies from individual and from bike to bike.
