What bike compares to the Surly Crosscheck

Are there any other bikes that compare to the Surly Crosscheck?
What I mean by that is able to fit a wide tire with fenders, use for winter
and summer commuting so able to fit a studded 700x35c with fender for the winter.

drop bar of course, and ability to have gears.

Any geared cyclocross bike with fender eyelets will be somewhat comparable, with some variation in the widest tire that will fit a given frame.

Many

If you want to stay with a steel frame, consider;

Soma Doublecross
Bianci Volpe

There are a lot of 'cross bike that would be similar in function to the Cross-Check. If you're specifically looking for a steel frame, that limits your options a bit. The Bianchi Volpe and Soma Doublecross have already been mentioned. A few other steel bikes that offer similar functionality would be the Salsa Fargo, Novara Randonee, and Rivendell Sam Hillborne.

Have a look at these (not in any particular order BTW):

https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/520/520/

https://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/thebik...roraelite.html

https://www.konaworld.com/bike.cfm?content=jake (aluminum frame, but still very nice.)

https://www.fujibikes.com/LifeStyle/C...s/Touring.aspx

https://www.gtbicycles.com/usa/eng/Bi...ATO-Peace-Tour (new model, and under $1000!)

Hope you like them!

Alu frame w/ CrMo fork on the Fantom and Fantom CX models.
Alu frame w/ carbon fork and disc brakes on the new Fantom Outlaw and Fantom Pro
Ti frame w/ carbon fork on the Fantom Team

CrMo frame/fork on the Fantom Uno, but that doesn't meet the "gears" category the OP is looking for.

The Kona Jake has a steel fork, and I think it rides as well as my other two bikes, which are fully steel. I'm building up a Cross Check now, so I'll be able to give a direct comparison in a month or two.

The thing that's nice about the Cross Check is that you can build it up geared, fixed/singlespeed or with an internally geared hub. What I don't like is the lack of cable stop for rear cantis and the downtube shifter bosses.

Hell, the Fargo is more of a 29er than anything else. It doesn't deserve to be in that list. I'd call it a rigid mountain bike, with a few braze-ons.

yeah, doesn't need to be steel, prefer steel, but aluminum would work too with a steel fork
All good suggestions. That GT is an interesting bike.

If you're looking for a bike that would compare, why not just buy the cross check?

The OP said he was looking for a 700c bike that would fit wide tires with fenders, would work for winter and summer commuting, is able to accomodate studded tires for winter use, has drop bars, and can accomodate gears. The Fargo meets all of those criteria and can also do a lot more. I'm not one to get hung-up on labels (i.e. it's a "29er", it's a "mountian bike", etc.). Who cares? The Fargo is a very cool and versatile bike.

I had a CC for 6 months. Sold it, then built up a Doublecross DC. I like it better, but the Surly is still a great frame.

I really like my Cross Check. Sometimes I wish I had tried a Bianchi Volpe just for comparsion.

The casseroll is a road frame.
Chili Con Cross or La Cruz would be their cx frames.
