NYC Commuter Question
Hi All,
My preferred route once i get out of Brooklyn and over the Manhattan Bridge is to head East on Canal and onto Allen/Pike and then North up the path next to the FDR all the way to 37th. Then i take 1st ave up to 47th and cross west over to Park Ave.
On the way home i usually reverse this and all is great. BUT there is a good stretch of the path along the FDR that will make it a rough ride for a MTB with a suspension. Needless to say its a shaky ride on my road bike. That road gets miserable with HUGE puddles when it rains and it is poorly illuminated. So going home in the dark usually means 8mph or very unpredictable ride.
I plan on trying to take 2nd Avenue straight south today all the way to the bridge. But there is no bike lane, I am gonna have to go with traffic on the 5 or 6 lane avenue.
Coming from Park and 47th, does anyone have any nice routes to brooklyn/manhattan bridges that wont add too much time to the commute?

I don't live in NYC but can give you a link to the "Northeast" Regional Discussions forum. I hope you find some good advice and more over there.

I always thought the run down 2nd was the single best in the city- traffic moved well and predictably, lights timed nicely, all that. There's no faster way down, anyway, and it dumps you out right where you need to be. Give it a chance to grow on you. Think of that wide avenue as lots of space to play defense...

Wow, I feel stupid. This forum is so huge. Thanks for the link.
BTW, i did that 2nd Ave home. It wasn't the end of the world, but my mind was tired from all the concentration on the cars turning, cabs pulling over everywhere.
