Indeed. I can't tell you how many times my iPod has made me confuse red for green, up for down, and an intersection with traffic for a pasture with cows peacefully grazing.

car drivers run red lights all the time - with or without their car radios blasting. teen drivers are a whole 'nother animal/story as well, isn't it.
I keep my MP3 player in a pocket and the pocket is usually warn enough to keep it alive. I try not to leave it in my car overnight when I drive, due to the low overnight temps

I listen to classical music. It doesn't improve my speed, but it certainly makes my ride seem more DRAMATIC! Or movie music. I dare you NOT to feel like you're on an important mission with the "Superman" theme ringing in your ears!

I don't keep my entire library on my MP3 player. I keep mellow songs on my cell phone and GYM music on my player. I change both periodically. I keep my entire library on my work computer, the home computer is for some of my favs but mostly for the kids music.

I mostly listen to communist talk radio (Pacifica network or Air America). But sometimes I listen to music, and I do it commuting through the big city. Never very loud and never with noise-cancelling earphones. Mostly the music doesn't have a noticable effect on my speed or awareness, but I've noted that Reggae will knock a few MPH off. And I stop halfway home to take a nap. I think it's the contact high.
I like the dig at the right wing nuts of the obstructionist party too, using the Communist thing is very clever. 8>)
I'll bet their swaztika tatoos are melting.
I'm mostly listen to a very eccletic shuffle on my MP3 player.

A while ago, I used to have my XM radio set up with the antenna under the seat. I had numerous choices from news, sports talk, jam bands, rock, alt, etc... However, the past couple of years, I've been riding naked so I have nowhere to put the unit!
I really do enjoy the sounds of the town & the road...

I'd bet it sounds like monophonic AM radio. Too many other good choices out there including open headphones that don't block all sound if that concerns the rider.

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?
Let me highlight what he did wrong:
Since when does listening to music make someone blind?
A teen in Indianapolis was hit and killed a couple of weeks ago after he ran a red light. He was listening to an I-Pod while riding, the police believe he lost his situational awareness while listening to the music. I know you said you ride mostly in the country, but I would still recommend against listening to music with ear plugs.
