Bikes on the L.A. Metrolink

Have any of you L.A.-area folks taken your bike on the Metrolink? If so, how was the experience? Is it a real hassle or fairly easy?

I commute to work with combination of bike and Metrolink....its no problem, each train car has a designated space for two bikes; velcro straps to secure the bikes. The bike storage area is at the right end of each car on the lower level as you face the train car. I have noticed more cyclists lately during the commute hours. What line are you thinking of riding?

Palmdale to LA Union Station.

It most likely would be on the weekend to visit family. I grew up in Venice and my parents still live there. I'd love to find a way down without racking up miles on the car.

So you find it easy and bike-friendly? This is good to know! Thank you!

Oh - I forgot to ask...is there a restriction or rule against racks and baskets/bags on the bikes?

I dont know of a restriction about this, have seen many bikes with baskets, bags; although some people detach bags and bring to their seats with them.

Try it and see, Union Station is an awesome vintage station; like a scene out of a movie.

the bike has to fit in the alloted space.
i.e. an xtracycle will not fit.
i put this bike on the Red Line
from Union Station to Hollywood/Western
it was at 8pm

you have to be mindful of how crowded the train is and try to keep as much space available for others as possible. That said, just head to the middle of the two-car sections and lean on it there. people don't usually stand in there, there is plenty of room, and you typically get all that space to yourself. I figured this out when I flatted a few blocks from union station and was too dumb to change my own tube--that problem's been resolved I'm happy to say.

You'll see a few other bikes going on the train and find some solace in the fact that it's not just you. watch what they do, adapt, and enjoy the ride.
