Thinking about a new commuter?
I am thinking about selling a Kona Jake to get a new commuter bike.
What I'd really like to do is get a Globe Vienna 3 Disc with some slight modifications. I love the look of this bike with the sloping top tube and the gray color.
I would like to have an internally geared hub on the rear, and a generator hub on the front. I know those can be difficult with disc brakes but I don't know how hard. If possible I could do disc on only the front? It is also important to be able to attach racks and full fenders.
Would all of this be possible on that Vienna or is there another bike out there better suited for what I'm looking for in my commuter bike?

Shimano's Alfine group is made to be used with disc brakes. That said, if you want a front dynamo and IGH with disc brakes, there are lots of bikes already out there set up that way, including the Swobo Baxter and the Raleigh Superbe Roadster. That bike you are looking at is in the $700 range, while the Swobo and Raleigh are in the $1000 range. After parts and labor to convert that Globe, you'll have spent more money on the Globe.

+1 on the Alfine dynamo hub. Just pop off a rubber cover and put on a Centerlock rotor.
Performance is selling a Schwinn with Avid Juicy hydraulic disc brakes, Alfine IGH rear with Alfine Dynohub in the front. Lights, rack and fenders too. The only iffy part of the spec is 24-spoke wheels.

So I decided to put a new front wheel and fork on my current Kona Jake. The shop that I got it at said they could get an Alfine 500 or 501. One was $135 without a light. The other was $110 with a light. From the information they had available to them right there, they had minimal differences. I ordered the cheaper one that came with the light. If there is a significant difference I would change the order and dish out a little more money. Anyone know what the difference is?
