"Can I not just apologise?"
:roflmao2::roflmao2::roflmao2:

The judge said that Mr Melvin was a "bit of an unfortunate choice of victim" and "gave him nine months in jail, suspended for two years, with 12 months supervision and 100 hours unpaid work. He was banned from driving for two years and must pay £750 costs."
Good, but lenient for a two-bit worthless punk if you ask me.

Unfortunate for who! Sounds like the judge is pitying the criminal. For the sake of public safety, it was very fortunate that it was someone who could easily take the proper action.

Fizzaly 02-12-10 05:25 AM

sounds like he got off light to me i guess they do things different in other countries then again who knows what would happen to him in the united states

rumrunn6 02-12-10 05:34 AM

at the end of the article there's a question: "have you been the victim of road rage - share your story with us" hahahaha you think anyone will write?

TurbineBlade 02-12-10 05:35 AM

Lock his ass up for a while, maybe it'll change his outlook.

Less tax money wasted on useless vengeance I suppose...

I'm pretty sure the Judge is just blessed with that dry sense of humor the Brits possess, and not that he was actually pitying the perp.

WhyFi 02-12-10 06:49 AM

Uh, isn't tying to hit someone with a car considered attempted murder? I think that the kid is getting off far too lightly.

trekker pete 02-12-10 09:01 AM

he should have received at least a year in jail and a license ban for 10 years, minium. and he should have also been treated to a proper beating from the cop.

Here in the US he probably would have been cited for "improper use of lane" and gotten off with a $200 fine. :notamused:

elkootcho 02-12-10 11:43 AM

Nine times he almost mowed down DI Melvin, aiming for him on the pavement, striking his handle-bars, forcing him off his bike into trees, threatening to kill him and hurling stones and coins at him...He was lucky to get a suspended sentence and stay out of jail.
Sounds like U.S. justice: Almost ran him down 9 times and doesn't get any jail time.

Fizzaly 02-23-10 05:19 AM

yeah i was just reading up on a few accidents here in idaho a woman who killed a local well known cyclist did not recieve any charges even after admiting she was not paying attenion to the road while "messing with my gps" so i guess if you wanna murder someone do it in a car when their riding a bike

JeffS 02-23-10 09:52 AM

What a crappy sentence.

Probation, community service and no license for two years?

I guess the US isn't the only country with a ****e justice system.

badmother 02-23-10 11:22 AM

WHERE is he going to do 100 hrs of unpaid work? At the local bike coop i hope..

tjspiel 02-23-10 11:30 AM

I'm assuming the kid didn't have a previous record. A short time in jail could have been a well deserved wakeup call, but I honestly believe that a good way to create a life long criminal is substantial jail time.

Subtitles 02-23-10 12:36 PM

Yikes! Just read about 3/4 of the comments. I honestly had no idea people like that even existed.

pandabear 02-23-10 12:45 PM

i've been reading the comments on that article, and it's just insane to me. living in Madison, which is very liberal and bike-friendly, i can't even fathom living somewhere that would make me feel uncomfortable for simply cycling. the worst i've experienced are honks, and i've only (audibly) been insulted a couple times (and admittedly, i'm not a conservative rider).

pharasz 02-23-10 12:54 PM

Unbelievable. I've had people honk at me and yell at me, but so far nothing thrown at me. I don't even care about honking and yelling - by doing so they are just making a$$es of themselves for everyone to see. What I can't stand is being buzzed. I just HATE that!

Garlic 02-23-10 11:58 PM

His 100 hours could be spent riding a bicycle around the same neighborhood.

akohekohe 02-24-10 03:57 AM

If that happened where I live he would be dead. Our police routinely shoot and kill people who try to run them over.

bizzz111 02-24-10 10:23 AM

Interesting how they were able to arrest the kid just on word of the cyclist. I guess the badge means that that particular cyclist's testimony is more reliable than the average citizen. Normally the cops would just say, "we can't do anything since we didn't witness the incident". I would have loved to have seen the look on his face if the cop walked into the nearest station and he got the type of treatment the rest of us get.

Yeah, I get very little abuse, so it makes the few yells and honks even funnier, since I think of them this way: You're the first person to yell at me of the last 2000 people to pass me. Congratulations, you're in the top 99.95% for *******s in the population. Only one person in 2000 is even as much of an ******* as you are.

I consider both honks and yells to be the driver yelling "HEY! I'm A HUGE *******!" Makes me smile. And that pisses them off too.

lol. I laughed, but think about it this way, it's kind of like he's the chef that gets to cook himself a great meal.

daven1986 02-24-10 03:30 PM

Yep crappy sentance, to be honest he should just be removed from the gene pool. I don't think he will make any significant contribution to society EVER, so why not just do away with him now?

You didn't do anything stupid when you were that age?

Sure, and got caught too. But my "stupid" tended along the lines of doing drunk donuts in dirt lots and that sort of thing. Not aimed at individuals at all.

I'm not arguing that this guy shouldn't have been punished. I just think "removal from the gene pool", to quote the post to which I was replying, is too harsh of a penalty in this instance.

the first time i got hit by a car on a bike was on purpose and i dont think that it should be deemed just doing somthing stupid id say its attempted murder the judge in my case on that one wasnt in agreement with me but he wasnt the one that experienced it so f**k him anyways id say if you hit a cyclist on purpose you should be punished a lot more harshly than if it was accidental
