Need to buy new bike

Hey guys, so this past weekend I had my wal mart schwinn stolen and I'm using this opportunity to buy myself a new bike. I ride to and from campus every day which is around a six mile round trip and I also ride around campus during the day. I have around a 250 dollar budget, I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations for a good quality bike I could buy with my somewhat low budget.

Craigslist.

I feel your pain on the budget question. I am riding what some affectionately refer to as a "bike-shaped object" or a "department store beast" (i.e., a Target Schwinn), due to budget constraints at the time. Looking back, I wish I'd done more research and looked for a deal on Craigslist. Since I bought the bike a year ago, I've had to replace the wheelset and do lots of tweaking to get things right. The same money I spent on my Target bike could have gotten me a much better, if used, bike off CL that wouldn't have given me nearly as many issues, I'm sure.

Here's some Treks in my area just as an example (not sure where you are):

Just bought a 1999 Specialized Allez Comp (full Ultegra) for $200. All it needs is a chain, bar tape, and a tune up. There's tons of used hybrids and mountain bikes that would make fine commuters (or road bikes ) for less money than that.

As long as you live in a big city, Craigslist is your friend. I couldn't find CRAP in Alabama.

My LBS has a sexy Fuji 10 speed I've been looking at for $100, it may be worth checking the back rooms at your LBS for anything that's been around for a while.

A couple of days ago Performance Bike had a special promotion (30 Day Bike Blast Sale) Diamondback Insight RS in their e-mail ad $199. It is an entry level hybrid with fenders and a rack. Nothing special but a great deal for someone like yourself on a budget. It is better to buy at your LBS. However, they will have nothing comparable at that price. Used on Craigslist would probably be more. Much better buy than anything at a dept. store.

I bought my Trek 750 used on CL for $200. It was recently tuned, with new tires and brakes. Ran like a champ for about 1500 miles till I ended up spending $350 on a full tear down/ rebuild w/ new cranks, chainrings, BB, rear derailuer and tires (went for the hardcase 28x700).

Its kinda hard to tell the wife you just spent more money getting the thing serviced than you paid for it! (she almost let me go get another one! )

Check Craigslist if I were you. I'm looking at a F2 Cannondale MTB FRame for $35 in decent shape in my local CL listings. Many great deals to be found there. I Just picked up a Torker Cargo-T like new at a real decent price, on an out of Area CL Deal. eBay is another possibility.

i would just go down to my local friendly bike store and tell them that you only have 250 dollars for a bike.
i am sure they can give you a good deal.
that is what i did, i told my lbs i had 300 dollars for a bike and they gave me a redline 530 hybrid, retails for 400 plus but they gave it to me anyway. if your lbs is customer service friendly they will do the same for you

www.nashbar.com has a real nice ss/fx for 200.00 w/free shipping. www.bikesdirect.com is bound to have a quality product at your price point w/free shipping. CL is another option w/good deals on road or mtbs every few days. Pawn shops, too. They don't know the difference between good/bad comps or names, usually. I've picked up quite a few 'sleepers' for friends over the years. To them a Roadmaster and a Marin look the same. They'll have them both priced at 75.00. Good luck in your search.
