Boston commuters: Ready to ditch the studs?
I cross-posted in the NE Forum. Please remonstrate if I've broken any rules of etiquette.
So then: Any Boston riders who rode studs over the winter and have decided to ditch them for the season?

I'm currently running studded tires too and the snow and ice that I ride on has become very patchy. It's nice to have the studs when I do hit the slippery stuff but I wonder how much I'm shortening the life of my studded tires (which weren't cheap) when I'm spending the majority of the time on what is now fairly dry pavement.

I don't really ditch, I switch. I have my no-chance-of rain racing bike, my chance-of-rain road bike, and my winter/rain bike. I'll probably leave the studs on the rain bike until April, but I'll ride my road bike if the roads are clear and I know there's no chance of refreezing during the evening. Also there's still a lot of sand on the shoulders, so I usually start thinking skinny tires when the towns do their Spring cleaning of the roads. When Winter is absolutely over I switch the Nokian Mount & Grounds out for Forte Gothams on my rain bike.

In the past I mounted my Nokian studs on my regular commuter. But this year I bought an old (but decent) Specialized Mountain bike for $200 and threw the studs on that. That is now my "winter bike". I haven't ridden it in about a week now but it's ready should I need it. In a few weeks I expect I'll feel able to give it a tune-up, lube it up and pack it away until next December but not yet.

Well, I envy those of you who have multiple commuter bikes to choose from. I have neither the storage space nor the spousal goodwill! My bike receives a makeover whenever commuting conditions change.

any day now - looking forward to it.
I rode one of my bikes with summer tires on the cape this past weekend and wound up in snow squalls. no accumulation just damp roads

heh - I have on Innova Ice Husky studded mtb tires on my commuter (NY) - and am kinda thinkink of taking them off this weekend ... all I'm doing is wearing the studs out. And if it snows I'll take the offroader out - I've got some good treaded tires on that.

<Sigh.> Snow. I'm watching it fall -- horizontally -- right now. Sticking? Only in my craw. Weather.com says that the overnight lows will be hovering just at freezing over the next ten days. Doesn't seem like black-ice conditions, and yet ... <Sigh.>

What, in MARCH? It must be tropical there in Boston. OK, maybe last week of March, but when I do that, I always wind up having to put them back on again at least once.
In 2009 I took them off on April 2, put them back on April 6, then off for the season on April 8.

Michiganders cannot understand what it's like for a New Englander to endure these taunts of Mother Nature's. What she giveth with one hand (40+ degrees and sunny two days ago) she taketh away with the other (snow/sleet/rain + wind today, with a threat of overnight freezing). It's the "psych season" around here, as Metaluna put it.

In the Philly area, we've had a record breaking winter! I'm ready, but even though we've had some teaser temps lately, I know Mother Nature has more ice & one more storm up her sleeve!

The saying goes, if you don't like the weather in Michigan, just wait 10 minutes, it'll change.

The funny thing about the saying you mentioned is that if you Google "dont like weather wait" you'll see that just about every locality in North America has claimed it for its own, from Austin to Cape Hatteras to Cincinnati to Bangor to Cape Breton.

If I change my studs before April, it will guarantee lower temps along with a snowstorm, possibly topped off with freezing rain. My marathon winters will stay on 'till April.

What a difference 62 miles makes. Once last winter & this past Monday are the only 2 days studs would have been worth the investment. Even then only to get to the main roads they. Fourth winter of commuting on Cape Cod & on a Raleigh Record with 27 x 1 1/4's. What we lack in ice we make up for with wind.

That's what April brings. We have a neighborhood easter egg hunt every year. Sometimes the kids are in shorts. Sometimes their in snowsuits.

I'm thinking about it, pushing 50 and the forcast is for a week of warm temps. just barely dipping below freezing. Alas I need to ride in the morning when it is likely to have dipped below zero. I just can't stand the thought of riding with studs one more moment. I'm planting my first row of peas, surely this means it is spring? If I wish hard enough ?

My feeling is my wild turkey's are fanning out doing there matting dance, Canadian geese are migrating north, there are more days above freezing than below, if it does snow its gone by noon and we turn the clocks ahead its spring
