Equal miles, 2 days or 3 days commuting

Well as I sit looking at the crappy weather outside and consider my next weeks commute I was thinking of changing the days on which I commute, which got me thinking about changing my strategy all together.

After my last surgery and chemo I started riding Tuesdays and Thursdays, 60 miles total for the week. About a month ago I started adding Wednesdays to the mix giving me 90 commuting miles and then something usually on the weekends.

Week before last I had 180 miles in total for the week and found myself pretty tired last week, mentally and physically. So just rode twice last week for 60 miles.

So after that long winded affair, my question is for sanity, fitness and just general time management, would you pick riding three days a week, around 90 miles, or 80-100 miles a week, riding two days a week?

I can vary mine this way, as I combine public transportation with my bike ride on my riding days. If I ride all the way in, its 25 miles one way.

Riding the extra doesnt take much if anymore time, as connecting trains and wait time even things out. End of summer goal of mine is a 7 day totally supported tour which I want to be fairly strong for. I will supplement the commuting miles with weekend rides through the spring and summer.

Thoughts, experience on the subject?

It can be good to vary things. Sometimes you need recovery to get stronger so there is nothing wrong with riding a lot one week and less the next, doesn't mean your fitness is suffering and it may improve with this strategy. So, mix it up depending on how you feel. On the supported tour, what do your miles and terrain look like?

7 days, 467 or so miles. Hardest day, 75 miles, sustained climb of about 3000' over 18 miles. Two other decent climbing days. Cycle Oregon if you are curious as to the ride.
