Lots of good advice here. In your place, I think I would:
1. Consider the source.
2.Try to remember a quote (I can't remember it's source, I think it is either Eleanor Roosevelt or Ghandi):
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
3. Ignore him/her/it.
Unless you let him push your buttons, ten years from now, it won't make any difference that he is/was a jerk.

I'm a blue guy in a red state, at a red company. Generally, I just don't talk politics. But when politics come up, even if someone who knows my leanings tries to draw me in, I try not to engage. Don't get involved in a meaningless battle you can't win.

Let the wookie win.

<derailed topic train>Funny. I work at a VERY red company in a barely blue state. My boss is talking on the phone all day about, well you know, all of the talking points we hear on certain cable new stations. When he's around I don't talk about it but when he's gone man I'm a force to be reckoned with. <train back on tracks>

Are you totally sure the guy's a jerk? My office mates send me crap like that all the time. It's mildly amusing. I call these people my "friends".

It could easily be that the guy likes to joke around and he doesn't realize you're a bit sensitive about the issue. And I will say, unless there's a lot more to this picture, you do seem a touch sensitive about it. Are you certain he has malicious intent?

+1 @ "Let it go".

If this guy was really against what your doing he'd be running you over in the parking lot, not sending semi-amusing jokes.

If he hassles/embaresses you in front of co-workers ask him:

"Why is it fat men are so mean and nasty? Is it because they're afraid there won't be enough FOOD?"

That's right, stoop to his level and then go down another floor.

Works for me. I usually take it all the way to the basement.
If that doesn't work tell him "If I poke you on the belly will you go "woohohohoo", Pillsbury?"

Workplace harassment is really uncalled for, and is only a detriment to work productivity. Trying to "blow it off" will only cause the situation to fester, eventually leading a major confrontation anyway. Again, I say snip it in the bud by logging all incidents, and present the information to management or HR, if they don't wish to pursue the matter, then start looking for other employment since continual harassment makes for a poisonous work environment, causing one to look forward to the end of the work day rather than the task at hand.

Is lardass your boss? If not, then don't worry about it. I'd bet nobody else likes him, either. (If he is your boss, keep accurate records of any incidents that could constitute bullying or harassment, so that you have something to fall back on when you inevitably end up talking to HR.)

Tell him that you are hosting a party and can't decide and that you wanted to "ask the expert".

Well said.

I'm less concerned about my own morale than the potential loss of productivity. This guy is an expert at disrupting tasks and brown-nosing.

I've decided to let these minor issues slip, but I'm reporting any activity that directly harms the company.

OP, I'd try to make a bigger joke out of it. As mentioned, photoshop some logos and racing wheels, title it "dream machine" and start a change collection jar to save up for it.

If he's an overweight idiot making fun of cycling, odds are when people talk about the crap he's passing around for his amusement, your co-workers are probably thinking he could stand to get on a bike a little himself. So, yeah, just blow it off, laugh it off, and let this guy be an idiot.

If he keeps it up, and in your presence, you can always step up, rub his belly, and ask if he wants to join you on a few rides.

Oh... and do it in a very light-hearted way so it shows that it's not bothering you and you are just having fun, just like him. He'll try to laugh it off, but he'll probably shut up after that. I did it once... pretty fun!

In the friendliest, and most casual way possible, I would make some comment about having to stay fit, so that you can dance on his grave after the junk food kills him.

After viewing something like this, you have a choice of reaction. You can choose to be offended, or you can choose to find humor in it, or to simply find it neutral.

Your reaction may or may not affect the other person, although it is likely that if you choose to be offended, he will choose to keep offending you. But even disregarding your reaction's effect on him, there is the issue of your own well being to consider? Which reaction is best for you?

The picture has been sent; the incident is now in the past. The past does not change, regardless of your reaction. If you cannot influence these things, why wouldn't you choose a response that maximizes your own happiness? Smile, find the humor.

It is possible that the photo triggered some feeling of inadequacy--don't get defensive (to him, or me)! I can certainly understand that. Perhaps he was implying that you ride a bike because you can't afford a car, or something. I drive a 25 year old car, and a beat up 20 year old cheap hybrid bike. So anybody who looks at me and thinks I'm, well, cheap? They're kinda hitting close to the mark. I do sympathize. I have often dreamt of the shiny new car, or the shiny new bike.

But these are all choices. I could afford a new car. I could afford a new bike. So could you, either now, or eventually--someday, given discipline. But both my car and my bike are adequate for my needs, and there is frankly other things I'd rather be doing with that money. If I thought otherwise, I'd buy the new stuff. So is is perhaps unfortunate that I do not have the shiny new things that my peers have, but I'm quite happy with the way I'm spending my money thus far.

Again, though--this is again talking about *your* choices. You get to choose! You may not like all the choices you get, but you're still allowed to do whatever you can to make your choices work out. It may indeed turn out that your priorities are different than those of others--surprise, surprise. Likewise, his priorities appear to not value bicycling, or even health. That is perhaps unfortunate, but it is his decision to make.

My apologies if the veering off track was not quite applicable. It's just been on my mind lately when I hear about some of these slights. Best of luck in dealing with your difficult coworker.

Sounds like an a-hole driver followed you into the office!

Just ignore him, eventually with his overconfidence he'll **** up and get himself canned by insulting you or a manager's sense of decency. Don't look like you are the one with the problem by responding to his provocations. Again, just don't even touch him with a 10ft poll. I'm sure you're not the only person who is annoyed by him maybe find the other people who hate him and spend your break with them.

Lot's of good suggestions here. But my vote goes to the "get him a box of krispy kreme's." I like it - address it to "Doughnut Boy" or "Bag-O'-Doughnuts."
