If you want to impress the roadies.Put all 4 panniers, handlebar bag, sleeping bag cover on your bike filled with crumpled newspapers.Head to the hilliest part of town and have the roadies try to catch you. You'll see some pissed off people when they can't.

I'm afraid I partake in SCR. I have an FCN of 11/12 (full sus MTB but not knobbies), but I've reeled in 2s, and have never seen a scooter. :p
|
was dropped by a fixie yesterday :( First time I've been dropped near campus in a long long time. He had a lower FCN then me, but i still feel like i need to go catch them.

Was red-lining it to work this morning trying to get my avg speed as high as possible... in lycra, with clipless, on a flat-bar road bike. Finally got exhausted about 3/4 of the way to work, and hadn't seen anyone yet other than the old lady I turned about a block in front of...
And at that exact moment, some EMT on an X-mart full-suspension mountain bike pulls up next to me, says "Good morning!" and proceeds to drop me like a bad habit. Too tired to pursue. Bastard sat straight up and rode no-hands for a while to rub it in, too. lol Caught up with him after that and we had a decent chat before we parted ways, but yeah... I got owned. |
I usually only speed up to catch someone, so I can say hi and chit-chat about cycling and whatnot.
However, I've had a little bit of experience with The Game: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?170707 |
I score about a 14 on my tourer, with panniers and Ortlieb office bag, platforms, wearing my tweed jacket and chinos and oxfords, with my beard. One might imagine I'd get another point for the fact that I put an IGH on there, but no. Fact is, I'm quite fast; faster than almost anyone away from the lights, and faster than 3/4s of people at a steady clip. When this REALLY used to be fun was when I was riding my Raleigh 20 with the stock whitewall tyres; total Granny bike, everything else the same. I was fitter then, and used to play with the lycra and carbon roadies along the embankment in London. I could pass more people then than I can now, and whilst I wasn't quick enough to pass real roadies (guys who can actually ride), I could hang with most of them for a couple of miles. I'd love it when I'd pull behind a Cervelo or something, and see him kick down to try to drop me, but half a mile later, I'm still there; yes, I'm blowing hard and sweating, but the guy on the 3 speed 70's shopper in his suit is still there, tailing the guy in the team kit on the Cervelo. Better than any pass, really (used to pass LOTS of people this way, but I'd just be focussed on the guy I was chasing!)

I play the game most of the times, even if I'm the only one on road :D
I love to see those road-lycra-shaved guys fall behind, I ride a road bike as well. It differs only the look: carbon-lycra-all flashy bike and gear, and I with jeans and a t-shirt on classic steel road bike. The game is simple.. I usually ride with roadies on long distances, training, and even in amateur competitions, and those who I'm riding with are the best in town, some of them professionals. If I meet them in town I'll have a chit-chat since these are friends, no game (I'd lose probably anyway but that's not the point). If I don't know them, they probably are in lower league since I don't know them, so I can out-run them :D, few times I lose.. and that's not nice, but if in a straight I'm outrun by speed, I'll most probably catch up on resistance (not many can hold 40-45km/h for a number of km), or the game is over when we separate (I or the other rider take a turn somewhere where the other one doesn't). |
I have raced crits and rode also with semi pro guys and done a lot of cycling and I actually do enjoy baiting a Lycra roadie on a cf bike into a race (me on old steel and no team Lycra panties), it is easy and it is great sport and they get really frustrated when they cannot drop me (assuming they cannot ;) ). Why not, it is fun and I have nothing better to do than to sport with them. I know the Gen XYZ, etc don't realize that before technology gave them a 15 pound disposable bike and aerodynamic Lycra zoot suits, we were able to go pretty darn fast, even up hills.

Best post so far! Also such a fun idea. Real life equivalent of trolling the road cycling forum. But back on topic, no SCR for me as of late, moved to less than a mile from school, worst ever. And the only other creatures I saw on my commute to the suburbs last weekend where a couple of walkers and 8 deer. |
i got passed today. :(

How many points is a kid carrier? Is a 45 pound 3 year old more points than, say, a 20 month old toddler?

Bump - it's time to get this thread going again
I just joined BF so, for the record, I'm a FCN 7 (fast hybrid, pannier, hairy, beard, cargo shorts) Got 2 riteous scalps yesterday (one a fixie hipster with a 24 oz PBR in his bottle cage), but got owned by 2 MTB, knobbies today (we had a couple inches of snow, which is kinda slick for my 25 mm armadillos ...) have to try to make up for it on the way home today . .. |
LOL, I'm currently at an 11. I've reeled in a couple of 5's on group rides, managed to hang with several straight-up 0's (but never passed one). Scalped a good friend of mine on a hybrid, while I was riding in full commute gear and panniers.
I wish there were more cyclists here. |
i'm a FCN 5, i think. i didn't know how to answer the beard one. i am currently wearing a goatee, but i keep it closely trimmed, so i said that it doesn't count as a beard.
i don't race my commute, but i do tend to ride hard and fast (speed is addictive), so passing other cyclists is very common for me, but not at this time of year due to the fact that there just aren't many other cyclists out there to pass. |

and pray for a tailwind  |
FCN 13. I get passed all the time while commuting but not many lower on the food chain than me.
The Bike Snob variant of this is "Cat 6". |
Right on -
I didn't see any other cyclists on the homeward trek today, probably due to my early departure from the workplace - so my opportunity to make up for this morning's double scalping has passed. I shall doctor up my bleeding ego this weekend with a couple training rides on the fast bike, then be back at it again on Monday morning. .... |

Day after day I see this guy hammering away past me but I have been slowing keeping pace with him. The other day I keep on his tail for about 5km of my commute when we come to this pretty steep hill and you know what? This guy not only doesn't slow down up the hill he speeds up. He's probably doing 35kmh up a pretty steep hill. Ouch. I swear, his thighs are about as big as my waist (and I am not a small man). I am just outclassed here but you know what? A little at a time I am keeping up. He is my nemesis on this commute and I will beat him one of these days. |

I'm an 8 (I would be a 10 if my Trek 520 had mud guards). I only pass another cyclist about once every week or two, and they're always going the opposite direction. Back in Indiana when I regularly rode on a cycling path, I only got a chance to pass another cyclist once. I saw him headed out toward the cycling path as I was approaching it, and decided to try catching him I was riding my Trek 400 (sporting a milk crate on the rear rack) in street clothes to the youth center where I was a volunteer. I passed him riding his modern road bike with all the standard cycling clothing. I rode beside him for awhile and we talked shop; he hung with me for about a mile or so then had to drop back, though he still stayed within eyeshot and we finally parted ways when I got to the youth center. It's always a nice, rare challenge to have someone to ride with to make me push myself faster.

OK, feeling a little stupid here. What's the ranking system, and where is this calculator?
