I live in New York City as well and that route that google gives you is horrible to get to Hunter College. It's better to take Kent Avenue to the Pulaski Bridge and then go over the Queensboro Bridge. It's best to avoid Manhattan if you can because of all the traffic and road hazards (the East River Greenway is horrible).

Actually' riding a bike from the Queensborough Bridge south on the 2nd Ave is a lot worse than from the Williamsburg Bridge north on the 1st Ave. Traffic on the 2nd can be insane.
