Our local cyclocross races have a unicycle category.

There is a guy that I share a bike rack with that commutes on a uni-cycle.

Oddly enough when I got here this morning there were two other bikes in the rack. A Uni-cycle and a tad-pole trike. 1 - 2 -3 wheels! Ha ha ha!

It is viable (late but helpful)

if you ride anything high quality you will pay a pretty penny although there are 24-inch unicycles for 100 - 150 and used there really cheap you could eve get a 26-inch that is good for rides on flat under 4 miles I use one and ride it a lot the main advantages are portability meaning they are much smaller than a bike and unicycles are good for rain i ride in rain all the time you just hold an umbrella if you do long flat rides I suggest 29, 32 or 36 inch unicycles
the sun 28 inch is a bit smaller than the 29 so less speed I do not know how much smaller but the 1 less inch gives you a much nicer cycle the 29 inch gets bad reviews and the 28 inch does not. Sun is not high end is under 200
the unicycle I want to get is the nimbus 29er with a road tire that costs 350 and if you want low maintenance get the best tire you can
the weight on the tire has them wear out much quicker than on a bike

Welcome to the forums, sowi12. I pass a unicyclist on my commute pretty much every day.

I bet there are many car drivers who say exactly same thing about us cyclists. It's bad karma to dismiss something you don't understand.

I agree with both of you.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone commuting by unicycle. But in NYC I have definitely seen guys commuting by skateboard (longboard). Couple years ago I saw a gentleman in a nice suit cruising down fifth avenue on a longboard, towing a fairly large suitcase behind him. He was really moving, made it look easy.

Yeah I know somebody who commutes on one. She's had bad luck with theft at the bike rack(maybe if she spent more than $4 on a lock and chain...when she locks up at all, things might be better?). Unicycle goes tossed up on top of her locker in the hospital, nobody bothers her about it.

There is a guy who commutes through my 'hood daily on a uni.
My previous neighbour also commuted by uni.
So for a while I was seeing 2/day if timings aligned...

I suppose if you want to cut down on weight, unicycles are where it's at. Heck, it's half the bike and than some.
I've seen unicycles with disk brakes. There was a father & son duo doing the 40-mile D2R2 Grenfield River gravel tour.
As far as commuters, there used to be a guy on a local rail trail riding what looked like a tricycle, but I think it was just a unicycle with 'training wheels'

It's pretty cool, actually. There's a niche for everything...

Even shocks!

"electric unicycle" doesn't bring up the expected results, so there's potential untapped market there

That's no way to talk about the fixie kiddies that finally grew up enough to take the training wheel off.
