Things I saw commuting last week.
1) I saw some big hawk of some sort, hunting for something on the ground in one of the big parks I ride through. He was pretty intent about it too, and didn't seem to mind me or the other person who stopped to watch observe him. They've had trouble with other birds there defending their nest in the spring, and I thought it was a dummy they had bought to scare the other birds away at first, but he was real.
2) Saturday morning I was riding down the MUP like usual and came across some people walking the other way taking part in some fundraiser for breast cancer. There were some cheerleaders standing on the path there to cheer them on, and I was too busy riding slowly to realize why they were all grinning so sheepishly as I rode through them. They were saying something like "no cars, no scooters, keep walking for those hooters". I got a few deer in the headlight looks from some of the walkers too, I think they were pretty surprised to see they had company.

I saw a Canadian goose resting on one of our side streets, which is unusual for here in this part of Cali. The resting goose was not as spectacular as the peacock that escaped from our local zoo a few years back, standing in the middle of the road in full feather display.

It was bat day today apparently. Actually first it was "those little white moths" day, but before long I had been very closely dive bombed by two bats picking moths out of the air. Both of them looked like they passed my helmet within a foot. Pretty cool. Then I saw a deer a couple of miles later, I see a lot of deer but this is the first one that just pretty much watched me go by. As I got really close he did startle a little and walk into the ditch. I think he was staring into my headlight.
