Kickstand

My new commuter has a kickstand, a two-legged thing.

I like it, but I see that it has half-inch marks on the legs ... am I supposed to use those marks to saw down the legs to a certain height?

Right now, it does put the rear wheel several inches in the air.

I haven't had a kickstand since I was a kid, and that was one of those single-leggers that you leaned the bike on.

Two-legged kickstands are usually designed to get one wheel off the ground, since you can't really have both legs down and the wheel in contact at the same time unless the surface is perfectly flat.

Do you have narrow tires? The two-leg kickstand needs to be long enought to keep the wheel up even if you switch to a fatter tire, so that may be why there are a "few inches" of extra clearance.

You can trim the stand (the line is for 26" wheels, I think), but if you do it wrong you may regret it. See this thread for details:

Kickstands normally come long and have to be trimmed as appropriate. The marks are a helpful guide. As with anything, cut them a little longer than you think you'll need, then cut again if that's not enough. Once they're too short, it's too late.

I prefer, "Think thrice, measure twice, cut once."

I've measured wrong twice plenty of times

the scale is centimeters, supposed to corespond with BB height. leave them a bit long as there is some splay over time ..

Aluminum welders can fix too short.

My father welded on a couple D shaped pads on the bottom of mine
so that is worked on dirt less like a tent-stake.
flat sides of the Ds have the legs fold together just like without them on there.
