Lately it seems like almost every day I have errands to run after work. But this usually entails going one direction from the office, then backtracking to another place, then home. It really adds on the miles and all of it in heavy traffic. Do you have this experience? Do you just enjoy the extra miles, try to consolidate, or what. Sometimes I can't consolidate because the next day the wife says, "Oh, can you pick up ___ on the way home?" It's really frustrating and more often I'm just leaving the bike at home to go get it all done.

Pretty much everyday for me my commute home includes an errand or two. Mostly I'm glad to get the extra bike quality time. My suggestion? Bring panniers every day.

That is grounds for divorce. Your wife is clearly undermining your desire to live a much healthier lifestyle, and adding to your everyday stress.

Maybe you could turn it into an opportunity. Perhaps you could say that if you're going to run errands every day, then you'll need to get a cargo bike (or whatever kind of bike you would like). If you're lucky, she may agree or at least get the hint about all the errands.

Make those trip worthwhile by picking up some beer as part of your errand

Get a trailer, and take it to work on the days you need to run errands. As long as she's fine with you being later than normal to get it all done, enjoy the ride.

Start riding a bike that you can't do errands on. Or talk to your wife about planning.

I like doing extra errands on my bike, gives me an excuse to keep riding.

I've always hated errands, even when I was more of a cager. I will suffer through famine rather than run a single errand... When I do bother to pull the car out of the garage, I end up doing as many errands as I can, and when I've got a bunch of local errands finally stacked up, I'll ride to get them done "on the way home" I doubt my anti-errand stance was the reason for the divorce...

I love running errands on my bike! It mkaes going to the bank and getting groceries fun.

^^ exactly. You've got beer, pie, icecream and an excuse to ride your bike, sounds like a win to me.

I do my groceries everyday and I do not mind it at all ! haha Two reasons. First - I like having and cooking with fresh ingredients and usually buy what I am gonna eat that day. Second - It provides me with a nice excuse to ride my Bicycle !

On my way back home from work theres a convenient store where I pick up some groceries, however its not a supermarket and the prices are too high to do regular shopping. I fit a few things in my backpack each day knowing I can easily get more items the next day. I really don't like the idea of carrying a lock and bike rack and panniers everyday to do errands. I leave that for the weekends (usually early saturday so I have the rest of the weekend).

The most dreaded errand was laundry, since I live in a place with no washer/dryer, and the closest clean laundromat is a 1.5 miles away. Too much trouble, so I just got a wonder washer online and small spin dryer (carried both on my bike, they are small and perfect for a single person). Maybe its laziness but its a lot more convenient for me. I like riding, but not with heavy loads.
I have a touring bike so while I could just keep the rack on at all times, I like going faster and travelling lighter.

They sure can be at times, like on those cold stormy winter nights going uphill into a headwind with loaded down panniers, and along the way, having to contend with cranky urban motorists on their way home.
