Cyclocross tires for commuting?

Anyone use cx type tires for commuting? I bought a pair of wheels that came with some Maxxis Raze cx tires. They look pretty decent. I don't think they will roll as well as my Kenda Kwests. But it would be a shame to toss them away.

I prefer slicks on my road bike, even in the gravel, but my studded tires are CX tires and I'm too lazy to change tires every other day so they'll stay on until the weather stays above freezing for a week or so. My coworker commutes on knobbies so that he can play in the mountain bike trails on his way home from work.

If you are commuting on pavement I would keep the kwests on. The Raze tire would be okay if you have to go through something like snow. You don't have to get rid of the tires even if you don't use them. I have a pair of Michelin Transworld city's that I haven't used in about 2 years now. I suppose when I need to replace a tire I can just use them.

Cross tires are a little too soft for commuting on pavement. Especially under load. Don't throw them away though. You may find a use for them later. I'd lose the Kenda Kwests. There're much better tires out there for commuting. Vittorias, Gatorskins, Armadillos, Marathons, etc. will last way longer then the Kwests. Spoken from experience.

Bikes: Too darn many.. latest count is 11

I commute on Ritchey Speedmax CX tires. No issues at all and they're pretty darned flat resistant. Especially at this time of year with a lot of wet leaves around I prefer them to road tires. Good ride, mine are 32mm, only drawback is that they only last about 2500 or so miles. I'll put them back on when this set wears down.

Go with monstercross slicks. Continental City Contact 42c will run great on pavement.

I used to use cyclocross tires for my commute during the winter. Five of my twenty-five miles were through mud under an elevated interstate. One day I stopped by my lbs on the way home and the owner had a good laugh at by steed; it was all mud in spite of the fenders.

Bikes: Lapierre Pulsium 500 FdJ, Ritchey breakaway cyclocross, vintage trek mtb.

On dry days I wouldn't mind much, but I wouldn't want to ride 'cross tires on wet pavement.

Cross tires will wear out quickly on pavement. They will turn into really thin road tires.

Yup. Upgrading to fatter slicks give a more comfortable ride.

Kenda Kwicks have worn out in 1500 miles. No real flat protection either.
Now I have Schwalbe Marathons for commuting, a wheelset for offroad knobbies and a wheelset for race tires. Works better that way.
