Last Xmas I found some battery powered LCD lights at Home Depot or Target. Good fun for bikes.

RE standard Christmas tree lights: Don't bother. The little incandescent bulbs will consume far more power than their light is worth. Maybe if you find an LED set it would be interesting, but still probably too much of a challenge to power unless you have experience in electronics.

A battery powered LED light set has a lot more merit, and wouldn't be too much trouble to try. You may find the beam patterns to be less useful than you might like to expect, though. Of course you can probably dream up all kinds of off-bike entertainment to use the lights for if they don't work out, so you won't lose much by trying. I think I would put them nearer the bottom than the top of my list of lights to try myself, but if you do I will watch with interest (and maybe put higher on my list if it goes well.)

Good luck lighting the night.

Works pretty well, as you definitely don't miss a bike covered in Christmas lights.

Regular "Holiday" lights drain batteries really quickly and are pretty dim, but the LED ones work well. Might even be able to find a twinkling set.

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

LED's are the way to go. I have several battery powered sets that I got a couple of years ago at the end of Christmas clearance sale. I believe they came from Hobby Lobby or Big Lots. On two sets I hacked the battery pack so I could hook them up to the wiring in my truck. I have a lighted Christmas wreath mounted in the grill for the holidays.

What would be fun would be to hook a set up to a dynohub...

I tried it with battery operated led xmas lights a couple of years ago. It worked pretty well. I put the battery packs in an empty water bottle that I stuck in the cage. Then I wrapped the light strands pretty tight around the tubes and secured the ends with tie strips. I didn't do it last year, but am debating trying it again this season.

You can get battery powered LED lights at Walgreen's for under $10.

I bought mine at Target two years ago. They use 4-AA batteries. No blinking modes, but they're neat. I'm putting them on again tonight.

I thought of doing it too. Makes a perfect "be seen" light as well as (hopefully) putting a smile on driver's faces instead of an anti-bike snarl.

Holiday cheer

I fire up holiday lighting on my backpack. I don't think it's my imagination that people do give me a little extra consideration on the road. Lots of chuckles while on the MUT. But I still have the same ol' grouches passing as close as they can.

Bikes: one bike for every day of the week

I've got four sets of LED lights, each powered by two AA batteries. One set gets run down each seatstay, chainstay, and up each side of the seatpost. One set gets run down each side of the top tube, part way down the fork and back, and down each side of the downtube. The batteries last all season long.

I have a video of the results with the bike leaned against the basement wall but it's no longer online. My photo/video hosting service started employing buttheads. I'm working on getting it back up.

I've heard the phrase "Look honey! His bike is lit up like a Christmas tree!" more than a few times while winding my way through town. The added visibility can't hurt either.

I bought a couple of 30-LED strings of these battery powered lights from DX last year and they work great. They flash randomly in 3 colors and are surprisingly bright. They're a huge hit with pedestrians, I get comments all the time.

They're actually a bit disorienting in low light, and it could be an issue if my headlight wasn't as powerful...

I found a set a couple of years ago at Target that run of 4 D batteries and have 3 flashing modes. I took some heavy duty velrco and attached the battery pack to my rack. I am getting ready to put them on again.
