Horray! I finally got out this AM. Atlanta roads have been horrendous to say the least this past week. I scouted out the route over the weekend. There is still ice on the roads that I take to work. Not nice to fool with mother nature. Made it into work but it did take a bit longer than usual. Took it easy on the hills (going up and going down, too) as not sure in places where the ice was. Foggy this morning. 37 deg. roads were wet and in places icy. soon soon soon the ice will go away! oh please....

31f slooow ride in this morning as my knee has been bothering me the last few days, generally when it starts hurting i just ride a bit more and it seems to go away, so yesterday in the 54 degree heat wave we had yesterday i went on a 15mile sprint hoping to loosen it up, but to no avail. I think one of these days i need to go to the doctor:(

It drizzled on me which was a surprise, but the temps in the mid 40's made it no big deal. I think it was colder when I got off the train, than when I got on.

Had to send in my LED light for repair, so I was running the old HID. I like the brightness of it, but the way the light temperature flickers and changes in response to bumpy streets always has me worried in the back of my mind that it'll burn out.

A little cool this morning at 3C/38F but not as cold as I expected. I was overdressed and had to slow down to keep comfy. I put in a nice 24km of relaxed riding. My PB Blaze dried out last week after a couple of hours under a 60W desk lamp. That thing is not waterproof, but at least it works again.

42F, cool and nice. Riding in with full moon in morning was kind of cool :) SoCal feels like nice spring time this week so far. Definitely feeling improvement vs. last week on my ride after swapping out bottom bracket which was driving me nuts.

WOW I would call that a slip-n-slide commute in this morning. Slow going, strong headwind, walked a bit at timnes, temps hovering just at freezing, and a thin sheen of ice covering all surfaces. Roads were ok, slushy, but the point at which I go from street to National Mall (Over by Washington Monument) was just an ice rink. Kept my gear low and crunched though the stuff.

I know there was a good discussion in here on studded tires last week...guess I should have listened!

I wondered if anyone would ride in this. I could hardly walk out of the house, much less get a bike out of the neighborhood. Metro for me today.

40F, dry. Flip-flopped from 18t fixed to 19t free. Wearing down as the winter progresses...

Since traffic was light, I drove the car to work. The MVT looked completely ice covered, but I did see a lone cyclist going along slowly near the airport. The MUPs should be clear by this afternoon, and tomorrow I'll be back on regular tires.

Woke up to wintry mix. Subway day it is! Got to the subway only to find the trains so delayed and platforms so crowded that people couldn't get through the turnstiles. OK, forget the subway, let's take the bus. Nope, the the line for the bus is crowded w/ the overflow from the subway and there's no bus in sight. So bike it is. Went home, changed and rode to work in the rain and slop. My feet are still drying out.

Just moved to Lexington in early December and started commuting then. Today's ride was wet, with temps in the low 40's. Rain was not a problem since I installed fenders on my Crosscheck a couple of weeks ago. Only problem today was staying cool enough.

jdgesus 01-18-11 12:57 PM

no rain and no wind, was a good ride, went a weird route today too, and it had too many cars

Rosemead---->Los Angeles
Dark, warm (64 degrees F) and fast.

28F, wet/icy streets. What a perfect day to get back on the bike after having a walking distance commute for the past 14 months.

The new commute is 7 miles of valley floor in SLC, I'm no longer living "on the bench" 700 feet above the city, so the new route is relatively flat.

The Nokian W106's were confidence inspiring, and not once did I feel that I was at risk of falling. The streets were a mix of salty snowmelt wetness and fresh new ice in patches.
As mentioned in an E&G thread, my brand spankin' new SuperNova dynamo headlight (symmetrical lens) lit the road quite well, faulty standlight capacitor notwithstanding (ba dump tzzz, I'll be here all week). Today was the first "real" ride with the dynamo setup, not counting late night neighborhood testing runs.
It's great to be back on the bike for day to day transportation. I've missed the routine.

Wow, I'm very surprised to hear that anyone was on the MUP. It was really slow going.

Welcome! I'm pretty new myself having started my bike commuting in September.

MileHighMark 01-18-11 02:58 PM

35f, and very little wind (mostly cross-winds). The roads had lots of crud (sand, pebbles) left over from last week's snow. I'm really happy with my Shimano winter cycling shoes, which I reviewed here.

gecho 01-18-11 08:52 PM

I think I pulled a tendon behind my leg last week so I haven't been biking this week. I'll probably wait until Monday to ease back into the commute. The weather has been cold and the MUP was probably buried for the first half of the week, so I'm not missing much.

BigCircles 01-18-11 09:29 PM

Steady, cool northerly head wind on the way in today. Warmed into the low 60's for the return trip home. Got my 3rd flat in two days...but fixing it wasn't too bad in the sun in a residential neighborhood.

FunkyStickman 01-18-11 10:23 PM

Coming home today was the worst headwind I think I've ever ridden in. It was horrendous. Thankfully, though, it didn't start pouring until 15 minutes after I made it home!

funrover 01-18-11 10:41 PM

Had a great ride today, I somehow managed to bend the rear cog on my SS, now it skips when I am pumping hard uphill... DO'H!

EricL 01-18-11 11:08 PM

mid-30's, dry and sunny 9 to 9:45am. very nice northwest wind helping me down the hills to downtown. seems the city is taking better care of the ice in the shaded areas this year. way back, low 40's and heavy headwind for the first half of the journey, then as the sun lowered itself into the mountains, colder and calmer, as I was so much colder and calmer than the cagers around me ha ha.

fletchh 01-19-11 05:44 AM

It's a balmy morning, right around freezing, 32 F ( 0 C). The humidity is up, but no rain at least coming in. I covered up the bike in case of rain, as they were calling for it. Yesterday was very bad, sheet ice. I rode to the gym, and had difficulty getting up hills. I should have switched bikes, but I was lazy the night before. I had a doctors appt, so I gave myself an excuse not to ride to work in the ice. I haven't seen that kind of ice since 1994, when we got 19 ice storms that year.

tarwheel 01-19-11 06:49 AM

Great weather here for my birthday ride. Warmest morning commute in a while, with temps in the low 40s. The roads were wet from overnight rain, but the rain had stopped. Temps here are supposed to reach the upper 50s by afternoon, which will feel like springtime after all of the cold weather we've been having.

wisaunders 01-19-11 08:01 AM

Fun ride today. My brother got a new road bike last weekend so he made the trip (12.5 mi) into work with me (we work together). It's great having someone to converse with and help keep up the pace.

Fizzaly 01-19-11 08:02 AM

29f Damp morning, got a nice 20mi ride in yesterday after work, i kinda turned a UPS trip into a nice leisure ride:)
