Actually stopped before a crosswalk this morning. Still had some dog walking woman look disgustedly at me like I was blocking her way because she chose to cross in the street and not the crosswalk. Then a van almost backed up over her dog while she was giving me the stink eye. The rest of the commute resembled a clusterf*ck w/ cars driving like there weren't any lanes they had to stay in.
|
I decided to take it easy this morning, no run..me and the dog slept in and he was fine with that. Got up and noticed it was 26 out, ok layered up and took my time. Left later than usual and was rewarded with the most beautiful full moon over the mountains. Stopped took a quick pic with my phone and continued on my way. What people in cars miss the opportunity to do. I feel bad for them. I was warm for my ride and the snow has melted enough to make the ride a nice easy dry one.

I was right, started feeling bad yesterday, and sure enough, today Im' sick as a dog. I doubt I will feel good enough to ride tomorrow. I'm going to rest up. See all you folks on Monday.

A rare homeward bound headwind. This coupled with my crap baskets blowing out, made for an unsatisfying evening commute. I'll probably zip-tie the baskets, they are the foldy kind.

Smooth ride home. The 22F temp felt warm. clear sky at dusk. Very nice.

50's to start the commute today...and then rode right into the cold front that was blowing in. I could feel the temp drop by 10-15 degrees. The northern wind - which was a headwind for me - kicked in along with some drizzle and light rain. Wind got stronger throughout the day, so thankfully I had a tailwind for part of the ride home.
Also - I have incorporated an errand or two into my commutes to or from work this week to avoid driving. Figure that I'm basically riding right by where I need to go, so why not just pull over and stuff some more things into my panniers? :thumb: Definitely a value add to commuting by bike... |
15F, snowing, 2 inches of fresh this moring and 4 inches coming home. Dry snow on glare ice makes for a lot of squirrelly riding.
|
Had to drive today because I developed a saddle sore yesterday and need some time off the saddle. I put in a lot of miles over the past week (180+), after missing a lot of rides in early January due to snow and ice, and may have done too much. In my experience, saddle "fitness" is the first thing to go when you take time off from riding. Hopefully I'll be back on the bike by Sunday.

33f nice morning, slow ride in my knee now is just picking random days to be a jerk.
|
Wimped out today... really needed to sleep in even though I went to bed early. Does that happen to anyone else? Do you sometimes just get really tired for no apparent reason and need more sleep than usual? Maybe I'm getting old...
|
I rode home Wednesday night, but will not make my goal of 2 directions a week due to the cold. Predicted high of 5 today. It's -11 right now. It's my first winter here and I think I've done well so far. Wednesday's ride at 16 degrees was fine.

The ride home was OK last night, though as dcb23 pointed out, there was a bit of a southerly wind=headwind home. Winds back out of the northwest this morning and blowing hard. I'm on the mend from my cold, though. Feeling better with the passage of time, and the commute is getting back to something resembling its regular ease.
In sad news, my PB Super Flash died a pianful death last night. Long story short, I got home and realized that the light part had popped off somewhere along the way home. Only the part that clips to the rack mount was still attached. I didn't have time to go back and look for it, so I resigned myself to going to find it this AM, retracing last night's commute. Found it outside the bank where I'd stopped the w/d some cash last night. It must have fallen off when I wheeled my bike down over the curb. I don't know how I dind't hear or see it fall off, but I didn't. Sadly, it had been crushed by a motor vehicle. I picked up the big pieces and the batteries. I seem to remember a thread around here about PB replacing Super Flashes that had suffered the same fate, and I thought having the pieces might somehow strengthen my case. Now off to search for that thread. |
18 degrees as I rode to work this morning, my coldest ride to work yet. I rode to work all five days this week, need to post my mileage when I get home.
|
Around 20F this morning. It was one of those rare days where I dressed perfectly for the weather. I was more comfortable today than a lot of days when it had been in the 40s.
|
43F drizzly.

Not bad today. around 26F, with lots of mashed potato snow on the ground.
But I think I have a problem... Besides hearing a ghost sound that may or may not be pedal noise (kind of a grinding, but it sounds just like when you have snow/ice caked on the rim and it rubs the brake), I seem to think that anything over about 5F is too warm... Is that weird? |
Sorry to hear that EKW...I had a similar experience of sorts on Tuesday when my basket blew out and my brand new, never worn, expensive dress shoes went flying into the middle of East Capitol street. With the ice and slush and cars coming I was fumbling to get them back in my hands before they were crushed.
Strong, annoying, but not too cold headwind this morning. |
Wind wind wind.
On the way in, with wind (mostly) at my back, I averaged 18 mph. Way home, average speed was 10 mph. :notamused: |
Very windy here too. 29F in the morning, 31F in the afternoon. Much colder with the windchill, of course, but not cold for this time of year. The wind didn't make it fun, though.
|
-2F with windchill around -20 in Chicago. I was the only one on the road.
|
19F and cloudy on this morning's ride in. Felt warm and toasty. The moon was playing hide and seek with the clouds. Nice.
I crossed a few icy patches without incident. I really like my studded Nokians. |
