Bleah, rain and dark both ways. I even had to ride my brakes a little on the way home due to fog and rain up higher. Man I earned that altitude, I hate wasting it on brakes! Oh well, it's better than running in the rain!

My commute was pretty good. Was trailing another commuter on a dual suspension K-Mart special that I struggled to keep up with LOL. At the narrow section of road where a truck came close to me, the other commuter crossed the road and rode along the footpath / gravel. This is what I have been doing. A truck coming out of an industrial site gave way to us which I really appreciated. Thanks man!
I’ve been really fortunate with my interactions with traffic. Sure there was the truck that ran me off the road but to be fair it was on a corner, the road is stupidly narrow, I felt uncomfortable when I started into that bend and I learned my lesson with zero injuries. In fact, the truck was probably miles away from me and I’m just being a nervous nellie. Another time a car failed overtook me just as I was arriving at a round-a-bout and the driver realised what he’d done and stopped to let me through (I was there first after all) but I waved him through. I tape my rides and have been reviewing them in order to see if I could improve my route and I see some cars cut me off but I’m so slow I tend not to notice them when I’m riding. So that’s cool. |
A wet morning, but not soaking at 50 F (10C). The weather folks are promising showers, so maybe going home will be like that.

:P 20F/-7C and nice calm air. Coldest ride of the season so far. Got some interesting weather in the forecast for tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. I haven't bothered to put the studded tires on the rat bike yet so if it's nasty outside, I'll walk to work.

Warm temperatures again this morning (60 F) with a thick fog. After all these years, I finally figured out how to ride in the fog -- I took off my glasses. They were useless anyway after riding about a mile. Fortunately it was warm enough that the cold air didn't bother my eyes and I can see good enough to ride without them. Not good enough to see what kind of critter ran across the road in front of me, however. It looked about the size of a raccoon but was running too fast and smooth, so it was probably just a large cat. It eyes sure lit up in my headlight beam.
I rode at a very easy, recovery pace and it felt nice. With the fog so heavy, I decided it was pointless and unsafe to go fast. Hopefully my legs will appreciate the break. |
Misty morning but temps were very pleasant. For some reason I had a long quiet stretch (no cars, they just all went away) for a bit and it was fun to just hear my tires on the pavement.

Commute was slightly annoying today. I got a new seat post and spent about half of my commute riding for a bit and then making small adjustments to the tilt. Once that was dialed in the last 5 miles of my commute were quiet and uneventful... just how I like it.

I rode in hard and fast, and forgot my office clothes this morning :o Good thing I keep a full set at my desk. Maybe I should start a Senile thread in 50+.

Fantastic ride, -4C with an alternating head / tail wind. Looks like I'll be wearing my thermal tights all week. The warm weather and good roads encouraged me to ride fast this morning. The ride took 48 minutes compared with 62 for yesterday morning.
I'm about ready to switch from the mountain bike to the touring bike for a while, but I want to wait until it gets cold again. I'm much less particular about the drive train on the old mountain bike getting gunked up. With all the above freezing weather forecast, I'll try to stay on the MUP as much as possible for the afternoon rides to minimize splatter. |
Excellent commute in this morning at 32F and dawn to overcast with very light winds from the NE @ 0-3mph. Dressed perfectly for the weather. Took the wheel covers off last night and didn't really notice a change in speed on this ride.
|
40° and raining. Broke out my rain cape. Better than last night's commute. My rear derailleur cable broke so I rode the rest of the way home on the smallest gear. Made the hills a bit more challenging.

Sweet commute in the AM. About 6:05 AM, pitch dark, drizzling, I unleashed my Centurion Master into the darkness. Double blinking backlights, single front light, Yellow rain jacket, and two tons of DESIRE!! ;)..
However, I am getting a little piss at how close the cars are passing me. On one section of road that I have to travel about a quarter of a mile, and I have to take the full lane, some aggressive drivers are passing me crossing the double yellow into on-coming traffic. Most of the time, they barely make it, all the time passing me within a foot. A couple times I tried to catch the drivers at the light. Good thing I fail on that everytime. I am thinking about informing the police of this and could they be on the lookout. It is LAW that you give bicycle 3 feet. It is LAW that you don't pass on the double yellow. We talking about a 30 mph zone, where I be doing about 15 to 18 mph. Other than that, a dam sweet commute this morning!! ;) |

I did not get to bike commute this morning and I am disappointed. The weather is great today.
Last night it suddenly occured to me that my car registration should heve been up for renewal in October. I didn't recall getting a notice. I went out to look at the car plate this morning and it has been expired for a year! I guess I didn't get a renewal notice last year either. I drive the car about once a week, so I guess I don't pay close attention to it. Neither do the cops. Well, crap. Just in case, I gather my title, insurance card, and registration from 2010 and head to the DMV office when they open at 7:30am. I just got charged a $100 late fee, plus current registration cost ($75). If I had paid for last years registration it would have been $75 then, so really I'm only out $25. I really maximized that late fee. |

This morning was brutal, as it always is when I take my single speed. It has full fenders and a panier so it made sense to take it (in the drizzle). My left knee started giving out on a hill half way to work so I had to baby it for a while.
My wife is picking me (and the bike) up to drive us to her birthday celebration. I'll be back on a multi geared bike tomorrow. |
18 Fahrenheit today, storm coming in tomorrow. Wind, rain, snow, cold. What's not to like!

41 degrees for the morning portion of the commute, again windless and again enchanting. Riding through the pre-sunrise morning on my side streets is one of the most amazing feelings there is, and I can't think of any other activity that would match it. It is so fresh, crisp, quiet - - The ride back was good too. I lock my bike in front of a busy grocery store and when I went to unlock it to ride home, there was a homeless man sitting close by. As I was unlocking, attaching lights and computer and pump and putting on my helmet, I said to him "Great Day, isn't it?" He answered, motioning to the Rig, "Look at that bike. I guess it is a great day if you're rich like you!" I guess in some circles having a bike makes one rich. I didn't tell him about the two cars at home in the driveway that I rarely use - But as I was riding off, I thought about the crispness of the autumn air, the fact that I'm very healthy, and I thought about my wife, my kids, and my Grandkids. "Yes", I thought to myself, "I am rich"!

Wet. Wet, rainy, downpour, deluge, wet. The worst really isn't the rain it's the puddles. Some are so deep that the bottoms of my shoes are innundated so my shoe covers are breached from below. Or the puddles/lakes have taken over the bike lane AND gone over the curb onto the sidewalk. The only dryness I will encounter is beneath my shower's pass jacket and in my Ortlieb pannier. Overkill? I think not.

Raining sheets today, both ways. Talking 2-3" today and tomorrow. I had one adventurous stop to avoid a falling tree, fishtailed but kept it upright (which my sprained hand appreciated). Scheduled to go give blood during tomorrow's scheduled downpour, nothing much for it but to get my day clothes wet. Not that my bike clothes will have dried out even by quitting time from whatever I get in the morning...

Bring spare riding clothes? 7ºF, with another inch of fresh snow accumulation during the day. Took the road bike to school today to test out the new 1x8 drivetrain; she handles ice wonderfully and takes off from stops a lot faster than the cruiser (provided that I remember to gear down to accommodate for the reduced weight over the rear wheel), but she's squirrelly as hell in snow. Coming home was a bit white knuckle. You Pacific Northwesterners are seriously hardcore for riding in those conditions. Given the same I'd probably wimp out and walk (and bring my pack raft, by the description of those puddles). |
From yesterday but it’s taken me two days to work out how to upload it
