I rode into the university today to drop off my laptop. I brought my GoPro camera and the mount that I built to get rear facing video.

-20C with a 25km/h headwind in the morning. The video is a graphic example of why its good to wear breathable clothing. Throughout the ride escaping water vapour forms a frost on the front and rear of my wool sweater. Wearing a less permeable material would mean all that moisture would be trapped inside.

-15C with a 15km/h tailwind meant I could drop a layer and didn't even need my goggles.

My limit will be when my ears get cold. I figure its not worth the hassle after that. I can't work 10 hours and spend that much time dressing and undressing for a 14 mile ride no matter how much I love to ride. Of course I live in Las Vegas and the coldest average low for winter is 38 or 39*F. ahhahaHAhaa
I guess I ride all year then.

A warm morning at 56F (13C). Rain on and off, but nothing soaking. I saw a rider today who came out of the same road from where he came last Wed. It is on the last mile of my ride, but it is good to see someone else out there. I hope he stays consistent.

Didn't even check the radar this morning because the forecast yesterday was for sunny weather today, so I was surprised to find wet roads on my morning commute. Fortunately I didn't hit any rain, but there were a lot of puddles and I was glad my bike has fenders. The weather is unseasonably warm, low 60s F at 6 am, with a stiff SW wind, which meant I was riding into a headwind almost the whole commute. When I got to work, there was no hot water so I had to take a cold shower. All in all, it's a typical Monday.

vtjim 11-21-11 07:10 AM

30F/-1C with a light headwind. Not bad though. I'm happy it's a 3-day week. :)

Had a nice commute last night temps were around 55 F. The roads were dead in South Brooklyn and i had a nice tailwind for most of my ride home that kept me around 20 mph most of the way. Usually on a sunday night I'm lucky if I hit 13 mph. One of the best commuting rides I've had in a while.

Pictures please, let's see what you've done!

I'll post some up as soon as I get home.

Awesome commute at 47F and dawn to overcast with head/crosswinds from the NNW @ 7-10mph switching to tail/crosswinds from the NNE @ 9-11mph about half way in. Had the fastest commute to school ever at 16.6mph moving average. Before, I was luckly if I could break 16mph, and that was usually with a tailwind. The shell is definitely coming along and proving to be welll worth it.

I'm taking my car today. First time since June or July. I've only been using it to grocery shop once a week and the store is directly across the street. Yesterday I put $4.51 gas in it. Last time I filled it up was July 1 I think. The thermostat was stuck closed. I've had the parts for 5 months just didn't bother with it because I really don't need a car anymore but I have to get it smog tested next month so I thought I better fix it. This car will still be in new condition when it is paid off. I just canceled the Sirrus subscription for it. This is how my bicycle status has changed my life since buy the bike in May.

gecho 11-21-11 08:11 AM

I don't know what I was thinking this morning. I see -18C with a 20km/h headwind and decide I can wear a light merino layer under my jacket instead of a heavy wool sweater on top. Past the half-way point I decide I really need another layer, so I stop and pull out my jogging windbreaker. Despite it being breathable, I was pretty soggy by the time I got to university.

-6C with a 30km/h tailwind for the ride home, should be fast and warm. Rest of the week is going to be toasty compared to last week.

GriddleCakes 11-21-11 08:51 AM

-7ºF, light dusting of fresh snow. Got snowed on last night coming home from a beer run, and I was pretty happy to have goggles in the pannier. Saw the snow and thought "alright, this cold snap must be breaking!". -7º this morning. The calendar says it's November, but it sure looks and feels like February right now.

There's a point around 15ºF where it takes longer for my car to warm up than it does for me to throw on a couple of extra layers in the morning. Below 30º it takes me longer to scrape the car windows than it does to lace up my boots. No matter what the temperature is, half of the time I gain by driving is eaten up by looking for a parking spot on campus (which also eats up a fair amount of $$) and by getting stuck in automotive traffic when trying to leave. All of this time is time I'd rather spend riding my bike.

Wet roads, but no rain and seemed quite warm for this time of year (55F). I was overdressed, and I rode in on studded tires (breaking in a new set). I'll have to remount regular tires again for a while I think, no point having studs yet. It's a shame though, I love the look of my new studded tires (W160 rear and W240 front), and I don't want to remount them.

ZmanKC 11-21-11 10:10 AM

A bit brisk, around 32°, spitting a little sleet, but thankfully no wind. It was really quite a pleasant ride. I even met a fellow commuter around 6:15 AM.

HardyWeinberg 11-21-11 10:18 AM

40F and between rain squalls so it could have been a lot wetter.

Passed an acquaintance on foot I wanted to catch up with at the bottom of the last hill, so I stopped to chat but of course started climbing the last hill to the office from 0 rather than using the momentum of the previous downhill to bring me halfway up it before I had to start pedaling in earnest... anyway, was good to yak.

MNBikeCommuter 11-21-11 10:23 AM

Last night the forecast was for 10F this morning, but it was 23F--a big difference. I used the hybrid with studded tires for the first time this season after Sat's 2" snow. Roads weren't in great shape but traffic was light so taking the lane wasn't as treacherous as it could have been. I'm hoping the promised sun and above freezing temp this afternoon does a little street clearing, but it's grey right now--not looking good for natural melting.

wphamilton 11-21-11 10:35 AM

I'm getting a kick out the snow and ice commuting reports. I'd almost forgotten about the windshield scraping thing and what a pain that is. It has warmed up here and might be in the 70's on the home trip tonight. Even so, a co-worker told me he's surprised to see me biking today because of the heavy fog! They have no idea how relatively easy my commute is ...

Chalupa102 11-21-11 04:14 PM

Excellent commute home this afternoon at 48F and sunny with head/crosswinds from the ENE @ 4-7mph.

This is currently what my corovelo looks like. I plan to make a tailbox section for it, but that won't happen till Wednesday when I get the time. I'm also going to remove the wheel covers because in crosswinds, they cause the steering to be really loose and the trike to move around a lot.

Completely wet ride in this morning. I opened the garage door and said out loud, "Holy Crappola" because it was raining so hard. So 38 and rain the whole way. Some minor flooding on the streets but easy to avoid. Not too much traffic - and people seemed super nice to me, more than normal, giving me lots of room when I was passed. I was soaked everywhere except for parts covered by my Shower's Pass jacket. Luckily we have a clothes drier (an air circulator) at work so everything is dry for the ride home. I do need neoprene socks as nothing keeps the water from spraying up into my shoes from below (yes, this happens in deep water). No shoe cover or fender will prevent that. Tomorrow will be worse, windier (45 mph gusts) and between 7pm tonight - noon tomorrow they are predicting anywhere from 2 - 5 inches of rain. THAT will be flooding and no way am I going to get on a bus that will get stuck in traffic.

Hahahaha - I know the feeling, commuting here in El Paso during the winter may dip down into the 20s two or three days a year. I like to read the posts from the people in Alaska and Canada and snicker

About 50 degrees this morning before sunrise, an absolute joy to ride. On the way home, the weather fell apart - high winds, rain, dust in the air - but the cool thing was that the vicious wind was a tailwind, so - - BONUS!! :thumb:

Looking pretty sharp, at least to me! I'm guessing that the tailbox section may help steering in the crosswind also.

If you don't mind my saying, please test it only gradually in winds or higher speeds. You probably know this already especially with the number of hours you must have riding your vehicle and I might be overstepping but for safety I have to make sure: you will be unstable at high wind speeds unless the center of pressure is behind the center of gravity. In other words, an arrow will tumble unless the fletching is towards the back behind the balance point.

I don't know why people in Canada and Alaska ride bikes in winter. I ride for recreation. That ain't recreation.

It might be recreational for them. I can totally understand it. Maybe I wouldn't choose to do it in Alaska but I sure can respect it.

dcb23 11-21-11 07:57 PM

Wet ride home but I stopped and got the right gear on so felt fine..but my marathon sore legs, injured foot, lingering cold, and a good headwind all conspired to make it a more challenging ride home than usual. (And I'll still take it over riding our metro.)

Igo 11-21-11 07:57 PM

I respect it. But I live in Las Vegas for a reason.

GriddleCakes 11-21-11 08:19 PM

Man, I thought that I was breaking speed records this morning! Flew out the door 10 minutes late, cursing myself because there was an exam this morning and lecture hall was gonna be FULL. Boogied about as hard as I can at -7º, blew pretty much every stop sign and a few lights (sue me), would've run the light at New Seward if I didn't think that it'd be the last thing I'd ever do (it would be), and came screaming onto campus... 10 minutes early? There's no way I shaved 10 minutes off the commute, no matter how many traffic stops I ignored.

Got home this evening and looked at the clock: 10 minutes fast. ****ing cheap *** piece of **** microwave!

Is to! Heck, I know a few people who don't bike commute, but just go ride their bikes in the depth of winter for the fun of it (singletrack snowbikers). But seriously, it's either go play outside and enjoy life, or close yourself up in your house and watch TV and play video games all winter (and it's a loooong winter up here). It's no different than skiing, as far as the temperatures go.

When the snow gets wicked deep or heavy, I start pining for a fat tired snowbike. Maybe the Seattle equivalent is this:

We'll see who's snickering come mid-July. :D
