I think they might have this thing called "youth" working for them.
He does seem younger and, looks pretty fit-I'll give him that. Even though my youth is slipping away, I'm, arguably, faster than I've ever been and, can top out around 30 mph in short bursts, typically averaging around 20. It just doesn't add up: even if he were signifcantly younger he seems to be operating at a disadvantage (slow bike, upright position, platform pedals, etc) and, he doesn't appear to be working that hard at all. Perplexing :-)

Well, my commute sucked. Had to drive this morning, and the electrical system died while I was on the freeway so I had to get a tow. Really wishing I could have biked it.

Great commute this morning, weather was perfect. Only a slight headwind. Will head out of work soon with an early dismissal for the holiday weekend. New conti tube on the front tire is holding up great. No flats this week (knock on wood). Maybe will try and get a few extra miles in on the way home.

Chilly but BEAUTIFUL! A high fog bank over the city made for a gorgeous sunrise, and while the sun was above the horizon but below the fog bank it cast that magical golden light across the West Hills. That lighting does something to me physically - I think it could temporarily make everything "alright" even if everyone I loved had just spontaneously combusted.

I hate to admit this, but I kinda did the same thing this AM. There are repaving a 4 lane I ride one. One lane each direction is repaved and the rest are pretty rough but drivable. An SUV and a Semi passed me coming up to an intersection. The semi stopped about a lane over. The semis always go straight through that intersection to I65 about a mile north. When this semi stopped I could not see behind it but I thought the SUV stopped in front of it to make a left and the Semi was waiting for me to go by before proceding straght. In my defense he did not have his turn signal on. So I waited a few seconds and proceeded through the intersection. After I did the Semi made a right turn. I am sure he knew I was there and was just waiting for me so he could turn, but the thing that bothers me is I should have thought of that. That would have been a fatal accident if he had just turned and I wasnt paying attention.

The commute this morning went wonderfully! I really enjoyed the ride in and the ride home. I actually had a nice wind at my back on the way home which made for a great way to end the week! This was my first week riding every day and, if I count the ride last Sunday, I covered 103 miles this week! We are going for a ride with some friends tomorrow so I will add to that number :-)

I rode to work all 5 days this week. It was another week of hot afternoon rides home, plus a strong south wind to pedal against all week, except this afternoon. I'll be off the bike all weekend. My wife and I are going to San Antonio and do the tourist thing. They say there's a big cold front coming. It's only supposed to be 90 degrees by Tuesday. May need my jacket for the commute.

2011 days ridden to work: 148
2011 commuting mileage: 3614.4

45ºF and wet. Hello, September.

blue9 09-02-11 05:22 PM

My ride home was nothing special, except for the fact that the road that I use to take home from work, which has been closed for the past 8 weeks, opened up again today! It's a steep, windy, but short road and it was closed to be completely torn down to bare earth and rebuilt - and it was sorely needed. What a dream it was to ride down it today! Although I did take it a little easy, not knowing how much oil from the asphalt was still on the surface. A good, hard rain to wash the surface would put my mind at ease, but it doesn't look like there's any in the forecast.

smooth .... no major issues ..... suppose to be 92 tomorrow and 95 on sunday ..... adjusted my saddle up 3/4 of an inch... seemed to help alittle on my stroke ....

no riding tomorrow ... 1st day off work in a month :D

Funny my saddle came loose on the way home. I stopped and tightened it up with about 10 miles left. Course it wasnt in the right postion. Kinda sore there.

Woot! Classes start up again on Tuesday!

I've really been missing my commute during the summer break, and haven't got as much riding done during the summer as I would have liked. I rode out to the university yesterday to drop off a lock and cable in the underground bike cage. Online locker registration began today. Tomorrow I'll load up two of my largest panniers and drop off clothing, shoes and school supplies in my two lockers (one in change room for clothes, other in a hallway).

I was supposed to do some riding / camping this weekend, but I drove about 250km before I realized I left my front wheel in the garage, doh!

Zelpo 09-02-11 11:41 PM

Did my first bicycle commute in nearly 2 decades this last Tuesday ... 20 mile round trip. Trouble for me is I work 12 hour shifts, and the commute on bicycle took ~50 minutes so that makes for a long day. Morning commute was great, 5:30am departure and very little traffic & very cool temps (central CA). My route is straight through the city, lots of stop & go. Approximately half the route is through the not-so-nice-part-of-town. Ride back starts at 7pm, and that was an experience with lots of traffic, crazies, chased by a dog, and stood out like a sore thumb because 1. I was the only one wearing a helmet 2. I was the only one running lights 3. one of the few that actually used the bike lanes.

Hope to do it again soon, working my way up to hopefully an every other day type of thing. Getting my bikes road worthy for such a trip has got me thinking about a commute-specific bike/set-up. I'm not sure a road bike is appropriate for this route & type of riding.

Drizzly coming at 64F (18C). It will be rain all week, it is just a matter of hitting the in-between times to head in and out. Although, getting drenched in the warmer weather is not bad, but there is a need to look out for thunder storms.

vtjim 09-06-11 06:02 AM

58F/14C, overcast, and wet pavement. No rain though. I reeled in a regular, then we reeled in two other riders so we had a little 4-person commute peloton. One guy was on a folder, too.

mjw16 09-06-11 06:45 AM

Cool this morning with just enough rain to keep it interesting. I stopped to put my rain jacket on but, I really like this type of rain: not heavy enough to make it unpleasant but wet enough to make it somewhat challenging-a good test of rain gear/fenders/tires, etc. My new Forte' Stradas performed respectably, not great but, pretty good for $9 apiece-we'll see what their lifespan is. Saw a couple of other cyclists but, nothing particularly interesting or unusual on this morning's ride.

ZmanKC 09-06-11 06:53 AM

After riding home couple of days in triple digits last week, it was 48° this morning. Cool enough for a light jacket.

wphamilton 09-06-11 08:11 AM

It was odd that I didn't see a single cyclist today. A little wet and low 60's tends to keep them in but I almost always see at least one or two. Maybe everyone is afraid from the flash flood warnings.

groovestew 09-06-11 08:40 AM

9C/48F, sunny, calm. The next couple weeks will be brutal in the morning with the sun very low on the horizon, right in my face for a couple long stretches.

Bud Bent 09-06-11 11:03 AM

This morning's commute to work was my first bike ride since Friday's ride home. I was roasting in the 101 degree heat Friday afternoon. It was 48 degrees this morning. Somewhere, you can look it up and find that the average temperature in north Texas is 65 degrees. What they don't tell you is that it's actually never 65 degrees here; it goes right from 101 degrees to 48 degrees.

unterhausen 09-06-11 12:22 PM

cool and wet this morning, not bad. A passenger in a pickup yelled at me twice as I was riding on the bike path, I figure it had something to do with the fact that they were rocket surgeons and I was getting wet. I find myself being oddly curious about what they had to say.

tarwheel 09-06-11 12:44 PM

After 3 days with no riding due to Labor Day travel, I was looking forward to getting back to commuting this week. Not. Woke up to the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee, heavy showers and tornado warnings, so I reluctantly drove to work. Made good use of my truck today, tho, running a bunch of errands that needed doing. Also brought some clean clothes and food to my office.

dcb23 09-06-11 05:28 PM

Wet and windy commutes coming in and out today. Quite a strong headwind on the way home.

Almost got taken out on the inbound commute, woman taking a left is looking to the right and just pulls out. I had to stop dead in my tracks but all was ok in the end.

Fall is here for now.
