When the deer exploded out of the ditch as I rode by, we both had near-coronaries. Riding in the dark can be interesting...
Till I can figure out gloves, found that the mid-20's is my lower temp limit. My thumbs didn't quit hurting till noon. |
Had 2/3 of a good ride to work today. Had to cancel and get a ride after that due to problems both at home (sick daughter) and work (messed up computer system). Happily both are now resolved for the day, my daughter's chilling out on the day-care couch and the systems error is fixed.
The roads were wet this morning, but at 8C in December in Central Ontario, a little water ain't gonna hurt at all. If finished, this would have been my latest-season commute ride to date. Will have to try again tomorrow if my Daughter's all better and ready for school again, and if everything doesn't freeze-up again overnight like it's supposed to. Cheers |
18F (-8C), very light snow, wonderfully dark and quiet. Glad to have the studs on.
|
warm & windy this morning.
it's dec. 15th. in chicago. one week out from christmas. i have yet to put my studs on. it was 52 degrees this morning. i ride to work in shorts and a t-shirt. WTF is going on? |

Little below freezing temp. Crisp and clear. Something isn't right. Below 32F in So Cal became typical all of sudden. Well, as long as it doesn't rain (or... snow).

Another good commute on the new bike!
About 50*, light wind, light rain. Got the wheel back from the LBS, it's nice and true. Coaster brake still has some noise when coasting. I may end up ditching this wheel in favor of a commercial one. We'll see. |
No commute today but yesterday's commute was awesome...
Rode in to the office with my wife and then pootled around while she had meetings... my R20 is off on loan to my BIL while he awaits his new Surly frame and fork as his was demolished in an accident a month back and then we will build him a new LHT. My friend and I ride the same size frame so he very generously lent me his LHT for the interim and it is so close to my Kuwahara Cascade in fit and set up that I would have trouble telling them apart in a blind test... the Cascade might be a little snappier acceleration wise and has a little tighter gearing in the rear so the jumps are a little closer. |
Commute today was nice. I love this weather - mid to high 30s with no rain. I can ride hard and not show up to work a sweaty mess. :)
|
I needed to get home from work fast today so I could see the Grandkids in their Christmas pageants at their schools, so I drove the car instead of riding. Dang Grandkids!:notamused:

I've returned to my old job after a 4 year stint of rambling, etc...
lately I have to be clocked in at 6 or 7am. Its out the door early, 5am. lately its around 36F in the early mornings and today, drizzle/rainy my lot goes in batches where I maybe I ride my Big Dummy to work one day, and schlep a few things for my locker, uniforms, food, etc... then other days, maybe just a messenger bag. today... just a pad lock, and light & motion Stella, showers pass jacket. |
I am getting better!! ;) My commute today was routine. However, I noticed how easily I was dealing with the traffic, and how everything was becoming more a less a habit. Also, I found out it was great to have more than one bike too. One day last week, getting ready take the bike outside to begin my trip to work, I noticed I had a flat. No time to fix it, I just put that bike back, grabbed another one, swapped out the lights to the fresh bike, and was on my way.
I am loving it!! ;) |
Yesterday's Sotuh North wind replaced by a North Sounth wind...warm. 50+ degrees as I rolled in wearing short pants no hat and fingerless gloves.
|
23f this morning, a bit cold. Maybe it's time to switch the sandels for shoes.
Couple days ago a driver stopped me on the side of the road. He wanted to know where I got my tail lights "I could see them from a mile back". He seemed a little surprised when I told them they were Whelen emergency vehicle lights, and that I'm running them on reduced voltage. Still nice to know they're as bright as I planned. |
Sheesh, Sixty-Fiver, I am right there with you this morning. I went for the bike about 3 times this morning, and each time the wife said NO!! We had breakfast together at Panera Bread and then she drove me to work!! :(
The breakfast and her company was sweet, ;)but the ride in the warm, comfortable F150 was a downer!! ;) |
rude awakening this morning. the weather rollercoaster is in full effect. yesterday it was 52 degrees on the ride in, today it was 27 with a cold, cold head wind right out of the NNW at my 12 o'clock, making it feel bitterly cold (local weather site says the windchill is at 18 out there). at this time of year, in some ways wind speed and direction become more important than raw temperature figures.
|
22F, foggy/smoggy (inversion) with light snow. The roads had a very thin sheen of snow, which I LOVE riding on - the sound that the studs make added to the light crunch of the thin snow is intoxicating. Yeah. I'm nuts.

No ride yesterday as I was taking a break between finals. -11C with a light head wind for the ride in this morning. I was dressed well aside from my thumbs getting cold 3/4 of the way in. I saw three parents driving their cars down the wrong side of the road outside a school today. I guess its too dangerous to let their kids cross the street because they might get hit by SOMEONE DRIVING DOWN THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD! It seems the prevailing attitude with parents these days is that its ok to endanger everyone else's children to protect your own.
I'll be riding during the weekend to study for my last final which is on Tuesday. The high for Saturday and Sunday is supposed to be above freezing with next week not much below that. |
Warm this morning (almost 40) but very foggy the whole way in. It's bad when I can outrun my sight-line on a bicycle! I almost ran over a big chocolate lab but luckily I was going uphill, not very fast, and could go around him. I first saw him about 15 feet in front of me, scared me half to death. I can see the fog line, lights, and reflective things at least 75 feet away, but not a wet, dark brown dog. He seemed friendly. A car would have smeared him. He followed me a hundred feet or so and back into his yard, so I told him he was a good dog.
|
Not bad at 50 F but ripping headwinds all the way.
Stopped at a redlight, cop car pulls up to my left and the lady cop driving asks me how far I'm riding. I tell just commuting and she tells me she rides a lot herself and to quote "Be safe mister". I say thanks and return the wish. Made the ride. |
Mid-60's here! With the skies clearing up it could be even more pleasant on the home trip tonight.

Great, but windy and challenging commutes today. 43F and dawn to partly cloudy this morning with mainly head/crosswinds from the NW @ 17-23mph gusting to 37mph. The winds definitely made for a slow ride in. I'm so glad I made my velomobile, because it helped a lot cutting through them. Without it my speed would have been much, much slower. The roads were also wet from earlier rain showers that went through. 45F and mostly cloudy with mainly tailwinds and some crosswinds from the WNW @ 17-19mph gusting to 32mph. The roads were nice and dry and the tailwinds definitely seemed to help. This was my last Friday commuting to and from school for the semester. Next week is finals week and my last two are scheduled for Thursday. Glad this semester is almost over. |
It's 50 degrees out there right now. 50. It was upper 30s when I rode in. I am going to bake - bake! - in my winterish riding gear on the way home (uphill). I may even ride without a jacket. *gasp*
|
Blustery headwind this AM on the way in. It's calmed down a bit during the day but kept blowing the same way. Looking fwd to a nice tailwind assisted trip into the weekend! :)
