First commute in a week as I just got back from A vacation in Florida overnight. Missed riding. Did rent a bike down there and did a short 5 mile ride with my wife (who is not a dedicated cyclist). We tried a tandem first; boy was that a disaster. Made it only a few blocks before we decided to return the tandem for hybrids for the sake of our marriage :)

Commute in this morning was really nice. Got a late start since we didn't get back home from Florida until 3 AM. Temp this AM in the low 50s. Looks windy for the ride home, but it should be more of a crosswind than anything.

I've heard that tandems can be bad news; apparently my wife has too she refuses to even consider

49f in was a little chilly for shorts so I put on some sweat pants but otherwise nice. Ride home was stellar at 80f with 48% humidity (low for here)! Planning to get in a good 40+ miles this weekend.

I got to use my multitool twice on the way home. My rack started coming loose, despite having used loctite the last time it came loose. Then at a stop sign I tried to simultaneously clip-in and start pedalling, but missed the clip-in part. Bashed my shin a bit and managed to knock my seat forward.

Yesterday experienced a little breaking sunlight on the way home. That was nice but too brief. Headwinds on the way home all week really have not been making me happy although the tailwinds to work have been nice. Construction issues have made me alter my route in a little bit but it's working better so far with zero car traffic allowed through (at least for now) - thank you streetcar for preserving that little shortcut!

I just read the forecast for the coming spring, i.e. through June. And I wanted to cry for a minute or two.

Lucky I just bought a Shower's Pass rain jacket. I will need it.

Ride to work was actually kind of nice, 30F and just a little windy. The way home was a different story, blowing wind that could not make up its mind, one minute it was blowing me forward, the next backward then a few minutes later it was blowing sideways trying to know me off my bike. Now its dumping snow. Supposed to get 3 feet of snow tonight. So much for spring...winter is back.

Beautiful day for my ride in to work today. 49F but had a strong headwind that I was battling the majority of the way in. As I'm fairly new to commuting via bike, I get really excited when I see any other cyclists on the road. My experiences have not been great so far though. My first week, I crossed another rider who went from street to sidewalk riding. Initially I was happy to see him although he didn't respond in kind to my wave and smile. He gave me a disapproving look and proceeded to ride on the sidewalk, matching my 21mph. Despite all that I've read here, it made me question my "owning the lane," which later I realized was crazy because I feel much better on the street than I do on the sidewalk. I also saw several other riders who failed to acknowledge me when I waved. This morning, I was riding the opposite direction of a large group ride of road bikes. I, again, smiled and gave a small wave without any response from the sleek looking road riders. I'll admit I was a bit disappointed that I wasn't getting any response at all. Luckily, as I was starting my last mile in to work, a gentleman on a road bike came up behind me (yes, I saw him in my fancy little mirror :) ) and we ended up stopped at the same stoplight, me being in the left-turn lane 2 lanes away from him and him continuing on straight. I looked over, smiled and said hello. AND.... He said hello back and smiled. My faith is renewed. I'm now confident that there are people out there who will respond so I'm going to continue my smiles and waves in the future. -- I didn't realize how much I looked forward to acceptance from other cyclists, but I really enjoy a friendly wave or smile. So, if you're in Colo.Spgs and you're reading this, you better smile and wave when someone does the same to you! Oh, and I'm riding home for the first time in the dark tonight. 11pm ride... Should be interesting.

I never see other riders when I'm commuting. Very few cars for that matter.

Well I actually had to work today (Sunday) oh wait I think I work 7 days a week now, anyway.. It being Sunday in Tahoe and snowing it meant TRAFFIC at a standstill. We recieved another 12-18 inches last night and so with avalanche control and chain control and too many people trying to leave no one was going anywhere, except me.
I started out in what should be bike lane but with too many cars too far right and 12 inches of snow where I could go I gave up and went down the highway between the parked cars. Everyone was very polite. I had one truck pull in his mirror so I could pass, others moved over just a little. I got a lot of "hey not fair" and "smart!" I made it to where I needed to go in 10 minutes while cars took 1 hour for the same distance.
My mountain biking skills are improving as trying to stay upright in Tahoe cement is a challange.
Appreciate all those cars though who gave me room and were polite.

Made it in just in time, as it is thunder lightening and pouring down rain. A nice ride at 45 F (7 C). A bit of a wind coming in, so it was a slower ride coming in. Of course I brought my bike cover, but since it seemed nice out in the dark, I didn't put it on. I wish I had the one back.

Just snuck in myself fletch..was dry when I hit the garage and by the time I was out of the locker room I saw people with wet umbrellas.

Was a nice ride though, birds singing, lightening off in the distance. National Park Service finally pathed up some very rough spots on Madison Drive which runs along the Mall from the Captiol down to Washington monument...those were shaking me up each morning since before October.

Sarah - Don't feel bad about the waves. This is a frequent topic of discussion on biking forums. New riders often feel the need to wave at other bikers because it's new and different for them. After a while, riding just becomes the norm and you don't even think about it. Do you wave at other drivers when in your car? I often nod my head or lift a finger when passing other riders, but not always. Usually I am very focused on my riding, so I don't hit a pothole, rock, stick, or rut. Taking my hands off my bars to wave is not in my best interests for protecting myself. I have seen a lot of cyclists crash over the years by not paying attention and hitting potholes and sticks, bumping tires with another rider, dropping a water bottle, etc. That is why waving is not a high priority for me. Also, I ride 4-6 days a week year-round. It just isn't that unusual for me to see other cyclists.

The forecast was changing just about every time I looked at it this weekend, so I took the mountain bike today which adds 10 minutes or more to the trip. Originally the forecast was for upwards of 40cm of snow over 3 days, but now its looking like much less. It was warm enough yesterday that the snow melted on the roads, and the same thing will probably happen today and tomorrow. I'll have to see on the ride home if the mountain bike tires are wide enough to keep me on top of the remaining snow on the MUP.

I came in after the rain that fletch and dcb mentioned had passed. Roads were wet, but nothing falling from the sky. Good morning for fenders! :) Nice tailwind made for a decent pace. Still not happy it's already Monday, but at least the commute was pleasant.

Got in a nice ride yesterday morning. Time constraints kept ride length inside 20 miles, but I did some climbing and checked out the newly reopened section of the MVT over the Humpback Bridge.

16 miles this morning. 38F, dark, rain, with a head wind. Not the best monday morning commute but I wouldnt have it any other way :)

Nice dark and damp commute today, but I was making great time despite a stop at the video store to drop some off. It was nice to be back on the bike after a few days.

@tarwheel - You're right, I don't wave to other drivers. I suppose I never thought about it that way. Thanks for the info, gives me a new perspective. I'll try to be less harsh on non-waving cyclists. Oh, and my ride home last night was absolutely wonderful! 39F with a full moon and no wind. Just me, the road, and my lights leading the way. Hardly any traffic.

My hat is off to you. News just said 101 in. of new snow at Alpine Meadows. Looks like there'll be skiing until June this year.

Down here in the valley it was a bit breezy, but nothing like the gales over the weekend. Lots of crap in the bike lanes. Otherwise, not too bad.

also, got my brakes tuned (de-squealed) yesterday afternoon in the dry, but this morning in the wet there they were sirening away again

Got in just before the rain, saw plenty of lightening just north of me though. The temp was mid-40's and felt kind of balmy. I felt really strong and my knee wasn't bothering me at all. I didn't hammer but, I moved along nicely, probably averaging around 20 mph. I have to say that I like the new section of trail by the Humpback bridge, it's not such a steep climb coming right after slowing to a near stop. It was nice to watch the rain coming down in buckets from my office window-knowing that it didn't get me this time. My new hubs/wheels are really sweet and seem to have broken in nicely. Since installing these wheels, I'm putting a lot more effort into daily maintenence, hoping to get more life out of them: wiping them down once a week or, immediately after a rainy ride. I'm cleaning/re-greasing the chain more and paying better attention to brake pads; I no longer wear them to nubs and will stop and check for/remove anything that may gouge the rims. Other than that it's business as usual.

Caloso, yesterday was standstill as everyone was trying to get out of Tahoe, they closed Echo for 3 hours. Being on the bike was great, though my legs are a little sore from all the stand up riding. This morning was great. Light snow, freshly plowed roads, just a little rutted slush. Went to the grocery store before work and it was awesome. Its still snowing and should make for another fun ride home. Seriously I think we will have snow until August at this rate.

Cool ride in - it was nice being back on the bike after a few weeks off due to rare (for me) illness and recovery.
