Someone stole my rear brake! WTF?! rant?

Stop me if you heard this one before.....:twitchy:

I don't even know what to think of this. I rode to school today with all four of my brake pads. I arrived at my first class and left my first class with all my brakes. I parked my bike outside of my next building the same way I have been all semester. I leave class to hop on my bike and come home to start my spring break (we have really early spring breaks in GA for some reason) and lo and behold I only have my front break pads?!! WTF!? I mean if you are going to break out an allen wrench and take some brake pads, why not the actual brakes themselves? Why even take brakes? Seriously, wtf?

Oh well, I was needing some new pads anyways. Now I have two pair of Kool Stop Salmons on the way.

I always think of the Smiths song whenever I read that phrase.

Sorry to hear about that OPP. Sounds like you have some loose Kleptos at school. They'll grow out of it, or maybe not, they'll just start working on Wallstreet.

weird stuff isn't it? A couple weeks ago I had a frozen turkey fall off a building and miss my rear wheel by a couple feet while riding home at night.

Some people, huh? They could have at least let it thaw. :)

flyingWeez 03-11-11 08:05 AM

I was just checking my email and had a shipping notification from Amazon. My Kool Stops that I had shipped with 2 day prime shipping had been upgraded to next day air and will get here this evening. That was quite a nice surprise because I figured I wouldn't see them until Monday (two business days after Thursday afternoon when I ordered them). Amazon ftw!

at least it would have hit the sidewalk with a splat and not a thunk like a bowling ball with legs

pallen 03-11-11 08:09 AM

cheaper than ebay...

flyingWeez 03-11-11 08:13 AM

So, I was about to ironically suggest we petition Pit Lock to make some bolt heads for brakes. Then I found these. Do you think they would work for center-pull cantilever brakes?

newkie 03-11-11 11:27 AM

That sucks. Was at the pub last night and someone stole my huge POS front light. Pretty sh**ty thing to do to someone who has to ride home in the rain at 2am.

fietsbob 03-11-11 11:56 AM

Interrupted a parts strip ,because my piss was quick.
location, public loo, across from Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen , Denmark.
rear brake of my touring bike.
I had to go find new 6mm bolts.. cut my stay short
and left the city, soon thereafter.

That's a crazy story dude - i remember reading that thread and thinking that it had to be some sore of mishap - I mean, who would discard a perfectly good turkey to try and kill/maim some random cyclist?

The OP's situation appears to be basic (although ineffective) thievery - yours is just one of those giant WTF's . . :wtf:

RubberLegs 03-11-11 12:33 PM

Had someone steal 1 pedal off my bike while locked at school once...1! Guess they only needed 1!

Andy_K 03-11-11 12:56 PM

At least they left your front pads. That would have been much worse. I always appreciate caring, compassionate thieves.

As a bonus, it doubles as a cycling video.

That's true. His story is bizarre, mine is just crappy. But my new brakes are already here. Free overnight shipping is awesome:)

Report it to your schools police department. Unlikely they would or could do anything, but you never know. Also print a flyer and post it at the bike rack. I did that when someone stole my saddle.

Basically it won't help you, but hopefully it will help someone else.

"As God is my witness...I thought frozen turkeys could fly!"

BA Commuter 03-12-11 10:07 AM

That is low!

I had my Brooks B17 stolen a few weeks ago at work. It really bothers me because 99.9% it was a co-worker! Try gluing a small ball bearing in the allen head bolt.

descartes26 03-12-11 12:57 PM

That really sucks. A few months ago somebody stole my rear skewer. I noticed it when my rear wheel slipped off as I was removing it from the bike rack. Luckily there is a bike shop across the street. The owner gave me a skewer free. He had a whole box of them. This ******* that stole my skewer didn't even bother to walk across the street to see what they cost. Eric would have given him one for free too.

Preferably compound.

Wake 03-12-11 06:36 PM

Rode to a 10k run this morning and forgot to put my tools in the backpack when I parked the bike. Somebody helped themselves to a Pedro's multi-tool, 3-wrencho, couple of small metric wrenches, tube, and patches. $50+ worth. Had to be somebody who knows what they are - punks.
