Bike Locker Systems

Hi - I am a college student working on a project to determine how much interest there is in the implementation of Bike Locker systems in urban areas. These would be individual lockers located at public transit stations, near offices and other downtown locations. They would target bicycle commuters who ride bikes that they would not feel safe leaving locked to traditional bike racks. The locks would also protect the bike and accessories from weather and theft and could be rented for a small fee on a daily or monthly basis.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer my short survey.

Thank you, Matt

I like your project and I love the idea of bike lockers. We have a few in Toronto, they are inexpensive, about ten dollars a month. They have some at Subway stops and at City Hall. If I could afford to buy one outright, I would and just leave it at work and at my home.

Great project. Just completed the survey.

I rent a bike locker for a meager $5 a month. It is conveniently located right outside my downtown office building. In addition to keeping my ride (a nice Cannondale) secure and out of the weather, it is also a place to stash a floor pump, a few essential tools, and spare tire & tubes. I mounted a couple of hooks inside to hang my helmet and jacket. There's about two dozen lockers and a long waiting list for the next vacancy.

Only downside, which is specific to my location, are the office smokers who congregate around the lockers. Some have an annoying/disgusting habit of pushing their cigarette butts through the vents in the front of the locker and into the lockers. Once I figured out why a carpet of cigarette butts were collecting on the floor of my locker, a little duct tape on the inside to seal the vent stopped that.

Good luck with your project. I just completed the survey.

I posted my experience with my bike locker at my blog:

https://utilitycyclist.blogspot.com/2...ke-locker.html

I didn't cover this in the blog entry, but there seems to be a lot of leaves that gather inside the bike locker. About once year, I'll drive to the locker with a rake and rake some of the leaves out. I can see that the lockers to the left and right of me are unoccupied b/c they have a lot of leaves.

From: Fairfax, VA commuting to Washington DC

Bikes: 2010 Kona Dew Drop (the daily driver),'07 Specialized Roubaix (the sports car), '99 ish Kona NuNu MTB (the SUV), Schwinn High Plains (circa 1992?) (the beater)

Bike lockers here are $200/year at metro stops, and in very short supply, allegedly. Supposedly they're looking to increase availability to alleviate some of the car parking issues.

** it is probably worth noting, for your costing information:

car parking is $4.50/ day at most suburban metro stops, which is where they have bike lockers, presently. Subway fare from my stop to my work is $5.25/ trip during rush hour.

Car parking downtown is between $12-20/ day depending on specific location, timing, etc...

Also, take a look at bikestation.com to see their model :-)

Just make sure they are water tight people in Boise seem to like to pee in the bike lockers and the ones here are not "water" tight at all

I bike commute to downtown Pittsburgh and am lucky enough to have this parking facility available. Pretty neat idea, actually, and cheap - some old shipping containers and some paint. Getting permission to plunk it down somewhere is probably the hard part.
