Commuters: What's for lunch?
Do you pack your own or go out for lunch? How many here actually undo their bike and go out somewhere to get something to eat?
Before I commuted, I used to drive out to the local Micky D's, KFC, or Popeye's chicken for a quick bite during my lunch break. Now I pack my lunch most of the time and not even that because I sometime buy a large pack of cereal from Costco and store it at work. So I just bring some milk and that's it. My coworker bugged me to go out eat with them but I rather not which is totally different than as if I drove to work. Sure, a burger or greasy fried chicken would be nice but it's the hassle of getting the bike down and riding out and getting back in the building that kinda stop me from eating out. Here we also have three other commuters and it seem as if they too prefer to eat at work instead if heading out. Just food for thoughts ;) |
I usually carry entirely too much crap with my on the bike. I bring a sandwich, leftovers, salad, whatever I'm in the mood for. It doesn't add much to the weight I'm already carrying. :)
There are times I go out for lunch, but I work downtown, and there are many great places to eat within a few blocks, so I'll just walk. |
I eat at my desk most days, but eat more when I ride in.
|
Ramen. Breakfast lunch and dinner of champions.
|
I go out about once a week, and I go grocery shopping for quarter-half of my lunches about every other week (and bring something perishable to eat back with me). The rest comes from home.
|
I usually bring leftovers or a sandwich in my backpack. But today I decided to travel light and just grab something from the local deli. Then my wife called me up to say she had a meeting downtown and if I'd like, she'd drop off some lunch. I like!
So now I'm going to be enjoying some of her delicious risotto from the other night. Veggies, protein, and complex carbohydrates all in one. I think Fausto would approve. |
Lean Cuisine!
That's all I've been eating the past couple of months. I used to bring lunch but always had issues with carrying food with me, plus it makes my bag heavier. ;) It took a week to get used to the small portions but eventually my stomach, or better yet my brain, got used to it. |
Could be leftovers, canned Progresso soup from the "kitchen drawer" in my file cabinet, could be peanut butter and raisins in a whole wheat pita from the same place, or a pouch of albacore with pita, and a little single-serv fruit cup.
About a mile from here, walking distance, there's a sushi buffet that doesn't suck, a chinese buffet, a decent burger place and a gourmet burrito place, chicken express, plus the big 4 fast food dumps, but I don't usually go there. I walk to one of those places usually 1-2x per week, the rest I go out with my brother or a friend, or eat from the desk. I don't eat anything on Mondays, so that only makes 4 days I have to choose anything. |
Can of soup or a salad, peaches, yogurt. If I have some nice dinner leftovers, I'll sometimes bring them.
|
i work in a downtown environment with dozens of easy to walk to restaurants for lunch, so i almost always eat out for lunch because i can't be bothered to plan meals ahead of time and then bike to work with them. typically lunch is a salad with meat and/or eggs, or a sandwich with meat or eggs, or chili in the colder part of the year. and i always make sure to have plenty of snacks around the office like fresh fruit and hard-boiled eggs.
basically it's all about meat/eggs (protein, protein, protein) and fruits/veggies (vitamins, vitamins, vitamins). |
Typical:
Ham and roast beef sandwich with cheese and mayo on wheat bread Small helping of Ruffles potato chips Apple 1 can diet coke |
I'm getting hungry reading these replies.

That's not a bad idea. Ramen and Cup O Noodle is lights and don't take up much space. Plus high in calories. Looks like I'm getting several boxes of Ramen soon. |
I like progresso chicken noodle soup.
|
Morning yogurt/honey/nuts/fruit snack.
Then lunch is leftovers/sandwich/salad and some kind of fruit...it really depends what's in the fridge, although I've been on a salad kick lately with leftover meat/beans/canned fish or some other kind of protein. Maybe 1x/month I'll hit the taco truck, and 1-2x/month I have some kind of meeting with free lunch but other than that I'm cheap so I always pack lunch. |
I hitch a ride with coworkers or bring leftovers and various other things for lunch. I have occasionally biked down to a nearby subway, but I generally don't want to risk getting my work clothes greasy or sweaty.
|
I dont eat out much because its kind of gross and rather have homemade leftovers or sandwiches, and with only 1/2 hour lunch even driving would take too long. So we eat in or get 1 person to go for all of us and bring it back.
|
Todays lunch/snacks:
1) Banana (seriously the biggest bananas I have ever purchased) 2) Chicken Salad Sammy made by the girlfriend 3) Celery with peanut butter (I dont cook well or make sandwiches well) 4) Goldfish snack things 5) Orange (like a half pound orange) |
I usually eat a serving of almonds and a banana. I eat a real lunch as soon as I get home (around 3:00 or 4:00).
|
1/4 leftovers, 3/4 pbj with fixins kept in desk drawer.
occasional trip to local sandwich shop or chinese within one mile. |
There are lots of restaurants near my work within walking distance. A grocery store across the street with a fresh food deli. I rarely bring my lunch but occasionally i'll ride my bike to get something, but usually I just walk since I eat with coworkers. ...although we're moving to a new office in a couple days with less options that are walkable, so that might change.
|
I bring enough food ,snacks and drinks with me to work to keep me going all day. I don't like to buy fast food take out, it's all junk.
|
I should bring a lunch more often, and I stash some food at work ( soups I can heat up, apples and bananas, etc ), but I'll usually go out and get something. They don't let me take the bike inside the building, so it's waiting at the bike rack outside the door for me. The only hassle is changing my shoes before and after lunch. Sometimes I just wear a loose, comfy pair of SPD shoes all day.
|
Most of the time it's leftovers from the night before. I tend to make dinners a bit larger on purpose so I can have a cheap lunch the next day. Sometimes it's a sandwich/soup from the cafeteria/coffee bar (we have a pretty good and healthy food service at work so I don't feel guilty about it). In summer I'll maybe bike out to have lunch with people every now and then, but I purposefully have a shorter lunch break so I can leave work earlier than others. No fast food from chain restaurants. That's a personal "food rule" for me.

I gather that most of us eat healthy in comparison to our coworker (except for the occasion splurging of Ramen :) ). |
